I have a question about UIL judging. My daughter told me that her school was ranked as follows by each individual judge in prelims: 1st, 2nd, 8th, 15th, and 16th. That seems like a pretty large gap and significant variation among the judges. My only thought is that their band was ranked very highly for either music or visual and very low for the other. The 8th place in the middle stands out either way. Any other ideas? I'm not questioning the judging, just trying to understand. Also, how does UIL judge compared to BOA? I saw bands that placed well in previous BOA competitions not make the finals at UIL and bands that haven't made a BOA finals in several years end up going to State. I watched these bands in person so, at least to my untrained eyes and ears, there were no major mistakes from any of them. I apologize if this post is in the wrong location. I'm new to this forum and trying to learn as much as I can. The previous posts about the UIL system explain it pretty well. They use ordinals instead of a raw score like BOA. As for how the actual judging is in comparison to BOA judges, generally UIL is more ensemble performance based than GE based. All judges are in the box, with none on the field. UIL is more traditional in judging with aspects like the cleanliness and preciseness of the music and visual execution by bands rather than the design or difficulty of the production. They are however revamping the judging rubrics a little bit to be a bit more similar to BOA rubrics. In fact I do believe this year there will now be a seven judge panel at the state level competition with one of the judges being a content judge with a similar rubric to GE in the BOA circuit, but I'm a little less certain on this point.

Interesting schedule with potential finalists spread evenly throughout the day. That’s what happens when a schedule is determined by random draw and not BOA’s version of “random draw”

That’s what happens when a schedule is determined by random draw and not BOA’s version of “random draw” What do you mean by this? I agree with you I think BOA’s “random draw” isn’t exactly as random as say UIL’s but I’m not 100% on the details. The most stacked lineup this schedule provides is probably Hendrickson and Cedar Park back to back then Lone Star a band later.

Sometimes we get some prelim ranks floating around before finals but it sounds like they’re being pretty strict about it this year so we might not see that this year.

Sometimes we get some prelim ranks floating around before finals but it sounds like they’re being pretty strict about it this year so we might not see that this year. Prelim results getting leaked happens quite a bit at the area level, but UIL is pretty strict about that stuff at the state level. I believe it's because they don't want bands or judges to be influenced by those results prior to the finals competition.

I've received the 5A prelims sheet, and while I will hold off on talking about its contents until after the 5A finals tomorrow afternoon, I can confirm that the scheduling is NOT a top 6 bottom 6 split like it looks like. The draws were just extremely fortunate for some bands and unfortunate for others.

Also to clarify on how the seven judge panel is set up based off the sheets: Four music judges (one ensemble, one woodwinds, one brass, one percussion), two visual judges (one individual and one ensemble), and one content judge (content and design). Each judge has a score for the content and the achievement within their caption, with both counting for half of the overall caption they are judging. The percussion and individual visual judges are on the field for the performances.
This also looks to be the set up for the 6A contest next week and all state contests going forward. A little more similar to BOA sheets with the added content/design judge and content subcaption within the individual captions.

A really big improvement from the old UIL sheets and the ones they still use for area. Genuinely very happy with the sheets and the changes made. I wish BOA had judges specifically for woodwinds and percussion like this sheet has. Very happy that the GE effect caption is a little less vague while still maintaining the same essence. I won’t lie, I’m a very happy camper here with these sheets and wished they’d be used for Area as well.

The addition of two judges also makes it less likely that one judge can influence the ranking of bands with a bad score. They've released documents that specifically detail what each caption judges, so anyone can look them up at any time, making it very transparent as well. This seven judge panel may be implemented at the area level in the future, but they may just stick to the five judge panel as it may be hard for them to find enough judges for all the areas with them going at the same time.
