Just curious. What do you think of horn solos being played on mellophone? This is acceptable but discouraged I feel like this is one of the rare things on which we will disagree (not that it's an especially controversial opinion). French horn solos have rarely ever worked on the field, in my opinion. French horns are wild beasts to tame, and I can't imagine trying to play with control after running around the field. I also don't feel they project well on the field, even with mics. I can't imagine having performed on french horn during any of my shows. I'll take a mellophone ten times out of ten, and think some of the best solos in history have been on mellophones. With that said, bring on more unconventional marching band instrumentation (bassoons, oboes, alto flutes, etc). Can't get enough double reed solos.

Re: horn vs mello...you're absolutely right, horn is among the most difficult instruments to master. But, a well played horn is a real treat, so if your soloist is good, bring it on Re: double reeds...you're absolutely right, for the same reason as above, give me more! And I don't just say that as an oboist.

I've never heard one completely in tune or without various fracks (including the Cadets 2015 ensemble). And YES on more oboists. Some of the greatest solo moments in BOA history have been oboe solos.

Oh I completely forgot about Fly to Paradise! It’s a beautiful song but I feel like band overplay that song. Maybe… just a tad😂 But yeah I agree that band versions of fly to paradise aren’t up to par with the original choral version. The original version had so much emotion and tension that you can’t replicate with instruments. Some songs aren’t meant to be band songs and that’s ok!

marchingmahem, not to be that guy, but a song refers to a piece of music that is intended to be sung; any instrumental piece of music can be referred to generally as, well, a piece of music! I had a beloved music history professor drill into my head that a song is sung, and it’s been impossible to get out since : ) carry on!

Thus the ironic Lieder ohne Worte by Mendelssohn (for those with no understanding of German, that's Songs without Words).

Although I have never done the calculation (nor do I want to), I believe Appalachian Spring has been the most played song ever in BOA. It has been played over and over throughout many decades and it has been played by many Grand National Finalist bands. Now I love the song and it does work well on the field, but yes I am very very tired of that song.

Wine-Dark Sea And… Inferno I’ve heard so many different versions of both its kinda insane! I actually love whenever something by John Mackey comes on the field. It's just that a lot of high school groups just have to simplify them beyond recognition. When I hear a really strong high school band or corps play Wine Dark Sea it's really cool! (There's also so much material to take so it never sounds the same, it's a long piece!)

I think Norwin is doing Strange Humours this year and I honestly think it's Really great arrangement and played at fairly high level overall.

Anything composed by Aaron Copland. Excepting his early modernist works like "Grohg", "Hear Ye! Hear Ye!", and "Symphony for Organ and Orchestra". Those haven't been played to death and they're great pieces that deserve more popularity. Give Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, The Red Pony, and Fanfare for the Common Man a rest.

Hearing The Red Pony two years in a row out of prominent Wes programs was a little much.

Listen, I love a good impactful Pure Imagination ballad. I really really really do. I would like some some variety as well though.

The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black."
Nothing against Blue Valley. It's just that hearing them play it reminds me that's two bands this year I've heard on that tune, while most of the Stones' other work is neglected (Beavercreek 2014 aside). Carolina Crown has much to answer for.

It's worthwhile to remember that much of the music that is overfamiliar to forum regulars here is largely unknown to many students and parents.

AND by an actual oboist (Rosemount) I don't think anyone will top Wando 2016 Gabriel's Oboe for me. Fun fact: Wando also played Gabriel's Oboe back in like 2003 (some early 2000 year can't remember which one.) Edit: it was actually 2000. They played it in the ballad and in the closer. Actually sounds really good. They also played Madea's :/ so that makes at least 3 times Wando has played Madea's. 2000, 2005, and 2019. it would still take Wando until 2005 to get their footing solidly in marching band portion of their program.
