I saw a thread that said what songs you want to see in band shows and I thought of this topic! What songs do you think are over played/ tired of hearing. I’ll go first! I’m personally over hearing Medeas Dance of Vengeance in band shows. It feels too played out 😅

I’m personally over hearing Medeas Dance of Vengeance in band shows. It feels too played out 😅 This is going to be a long one lol.. Medea, Barber's Symphony No. 1, Malaguena, Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Asphalt Cocktail, Thousand Airplanes on a Rooftop, Glassworks, Creep, Bohemian Rhapsody, Triumph of Time, Flight of Paradise, 1812 Overture, Blue Shades, Pure Imagination and True Colors. I'm sure there are few more that I'm forgetting too. Also I know it's never been done by a top band, but I never want to hear "My body is a cage" in finals.

I think we forgot a big one. The Sound of Silence. Boy did bands live using that song in 2016!

Back in the 1990s it seemed like there were only three field shows: Phantom of the Opera, The Planets, and West Side Story. I've heard each of these approximately 10,000 times at marching band competitions. You don't hear Phantom or West Side as much anymore, though they're still around. But, as good as it is, "Mars, the Bringer of War" from The Planets has been on the most-overplayed marching band songs list for at least 30 consecutive years.

Someone said fly to paradise. As much as I love Lux Arumque, it is also time to retire that. Sleep is a great one though, wando used it in 2012 - was so effective! Water music is good too but maybe a touch over played. EQUUS PLEASE LET THIS DIE ya'll btw, what did you think of Mason in 2015 lol

I saw a little band with a cute idea a couple years ago. They had a banner reading "Mars" and they started playing Holst. Then one of the players shouted to stop the rest of the group and revealed, forty-humans style, that the banner in full read "Bruno Mars," upon which they performed "Locked Out of Heaven," "The Lazy Song" and so on.

As much as I love Lux Arumque, it is also time to retire that. Controversial (?) take: "Lux Aurumque" is one of Whitacre's best vocal works, a masterpiece, and absolutely every instrumental version I've heard (concert band, marching band, or drum corps) has absolutely sucked eggs. That is a song BUILT for the human voice, winds need to stay away.

Any solo performed on a different instrument than the source music orchestration I feel quite differently about this. For one thing, that limitation would rule out any non-sung marching band adaptations of vocal works.

Any solo performed on a different instrument than the source music orchestration Just curious. What do you think of horn solos being played on mellophone?

Reminds me of the "rule" of the late John Simon, a movie and drama critic, about successful film adaptations of plays: "If it's worth doing, it can't be done. If it can be done, it's not worth doing."

Stairway to Heaven (I say even though my alma mater is doing that this year) Hymn of Axiom (Unless actually done by Bluecoats) Malaguena Bohemian Rhapsody Dies Arae
I also don't particularly enjoy hearing marching bands do anything that's taken directly from a Drum Corps, especially if in recent memory. Ex: Creep. If you don't have new take on this, or if you can't do it as well as the Bluecoats, just don't do it.

Fine having an ensemble play an arrangement/orchestration of most pieces

Since the mellophone is known as the marching equivalent of the horn, I suspect he has little or no issue with it. And it's also not uncommon for a mellophone player to put down the instrument and pick up a horn for a solo.

It’s so beautiful but I find myself comparing it to The Bluecoats every time and that just isn’t fair. Can people PLEASE stop playing The Greatest Showman…I’m so sick of it…I think I’ve heard A Million Dreams a million times by now. The Greatest Show isn’t great after a hundred shows. Rewrite The Stars has been rewritten…you get the idea. I’m out of wordplay inspiration.
