Since I’m on a thread-creating-roll, I might as well continue it.
This thread basically serves the purpose of discussing which high school has the best or one of the best ____ programs in the country (whether that be guard, percussion, woodwinds, brass, etc)
For example, I’ll start here:
Avon has the best guard program in the country. Mason has woodwinds. Hebron has brass. Chino Hills has percussion.
[insert algorithm discourse here]
Have fun!

I think that Carmel has the best writing in the music department. (Big shocker with saucedo at the helm). Does Michael gaines also still do their drill?

That would be awesome. I'd love to see the turntable make San Antonio Finals again and again. Make it a required element at UIL state - it sits midfield for everyone, use it as you like

Make it a required element at UIL state - it sits midfield for everyone, use it as you like I've often said it would be great to have everybody's show designed around a common set of props. Then we can see where the true creativity and performance abilities lie. The turntable is a PERFECT common prop to use in this scenario at Grand Nationals!

Hebron is definitely up there as well, it seems like they have the most stunning woodwind soloists year after year.

My fully biased opinion (as the father of a Mason woodwind player from the mid- to late-2000s) is that your initial statement is correct. Mason's woodwinds have been consistently THAT good since before Allohak played oboe in the concert recording that was used to award the Sudler Shield to the program. In trying to remove personal bias from the discussion, I chose to list some other groups whose claims to the unofficial title of "best woodwind band" would not be difficult to support.

What’s that. Lol. Mason was fantastic back in the day as playing Oboe is the most difficult woodwind instrument IMO. I have however been camp Wando for anything 2000’s but I’ll put most if not all BA, Tarpon and Texas Elite woodwind section against Mason 2010’s any day. I’m pretty sure I’m 40% wrong since I am a brass guy. Probably not.

There was a year that Vista Marietta came out To Grand Nats, and I don’t think I’ve seen cleaner drill at BOA than I did from them that day. I want to say it was 2016 or 2017.

I can agree with Tarpon Springs and the best of Texas (when not drowned out by the brass) as comparable to Mason in the 2010s. And Wando in the 2000s was the benchmark for my opinions. Thus the use of Wando, Tarpon Springs, and top Texas sections as my example in the original response. Broken Arrow has never struck me as particularly strong in woodwinds. Not saying their woodwinds are a weak spot by any stretch, but they just don't stand out to me as a group to be mentioned at the top of that heap consistently. Broken Arrow's greatest asset for me is that they are consistently good across the board with no one aspect of their shows being THE thing they are known for (although some will point to their guard as THE thing).

Top woodwind programs by state:
Oklahoma: Broken Arrow (also a case for Union imo) Texas: Hebron Ohio: Mason Indiana: Carmel (not close at all) Missouri: Grain Valley? Maybe Blue Springs but music isn’t BS’ strong suit California: Ayala Florida: Tarpon Tennessee: DB (def a case for Franklin here) Kentucky: North Hardin (not really close at all) Carolinas: Wando Bando Pennsylvania: Kiski or Norwin depending on the year
Some of these are closer than others, which is why I elaborated on a few. A lot of these programs listed above have a solid case for top 50 WW programs in the country, which is impressive considering a few of them are AA. I love to see our small bands shine! Some other amazing woodwind programs: Westlake, FloMo, CTJ, TWHS, Leander (!!!), Cy-Fair, Byrnes
I also must note that I considered marching AND concert achievements into this: a lot of bands listed above have top tier woodwind programs in general as opposed to just in marching band.

I can't imagine how much fun they must be having with the show this year, sharks aside it's very entertaining. The uniforms are also a highlight. In finals the head drum major looked so cool and so proud the entire show lol, never seen so much positive energy emanating from a drum major.

Concert: At one point, for many years (the Gorham years), Owasso held the lead in the concert bands department. Then BA for a few years. Now Jenks, although if we're talking about the top concert band among the districts, I can't say there is a clear leader right now, especially after last year. BA and Jenks probably have the best. Edmond Santa Fe, Moore, and Westmoore also had incredibly talented concert programs for many years.

Here are my current brass rankings that no one asked for:
1) Hebron 2) Flower Mound 3) Broken Arrow 5) CTJ 6) Vista Ridge 7) Vandegrift 8) The Woodlands 9) Carmel 10) Ronald Reagan 11) Avon
These are based only on marching band performances this season. Honestly CTJ and Reagan could be anywhere on here because I haven't seen a performance from either in a while.

Tarpon Springs 7. CTJ 8. Woodlands 9. Carmel 10. Marcus I think I’m a little easier on the indiana groups than a lot of non-indiana residents simply because I’m so often blown away by the simultaneous responsibilities. Avon’s 2013 opener comes to mind, no Texas group has come close to achieving something like that while on the move IMO
