Because I'm too lazy to look, when is the last time Carmel didn't win? Um… the last BOA I forgot that 2019 existed I guess they won the three prior seasons.

Didn't think it was possible for them to sound any better than their BOA performance but the mad lads did it. Unbelievable!

After two blocks, here are my WILDLY bad rankings now haha. Between electronics issues, surprise performances, etc, this is truly going to be a crazy finish! 1 The Woodlands 2 Avon 3 Ronald Reagan 4 Claudia Taylor Johnson 5 Wando 6 Vista Ridge 7 Round Rock 8 William Mason 9 Blue Springs 10 Fishers 11 Castle 12 Franklin 13 Jenison 14 Rockford 15 Cleveland 16 Morton 17 PCEP 18 Bourbon County 19 Signal Mountain 20 Archbishop Alter BA, in a historical move, has achieved 0th place. The community is divided on whether this is the best or the worst. The judges themselves don’t know.

Ronald Reagan is definitely looking and sounding much better than their San Antonio performances. I will also share my rankings list: (definite medal tier) Broken Arrow (maybe medal tier) Avon The Woodlands Ronald Reagan Claudia Taylor Johnson (Finals lock tier, probably bottom half) William Mason Blue Springs Vista Ridge (bubble bands who have good Music/Visual performance, but issues with GE) Castle Wando Round Rock (bubble bands who have good GE, but low Music/Visual performance) Fishers Franklin I like this list

Maybe it's the accountant in me but I'd love to see the variance among band budgets from group to group. I went down the rabbit hole of looking up 990-EZs for a couple of major bands with nonprofit booster organizations, but you can only get so much info from those. Either way, some pretty massive $$$ for some of the more well-known bands, with some big fundraising/grant numbers. A band of regional note and with a modest nation profile (couple time semifinalist) that I've worked with has run around a quarter of a million plus. Are we taking several multiples of that?

I'm so glad Broken Arrow listed their show music in the program book. I know what ill be listening to on repeat all day tomorrow. Do you mind posting the repertoire if you have a spare moment? I've been very curious. Sure! The Edge of Eternity, Musical selections include: "Deliverance" Thomas Bergersen, "Concerto for Harpsichord and String Orchestra, Op. 40" - Henryk Gorecki, "Grace" - Arturo Cardelus

Round Rock's show is really not doing it for me, especially visually. I feel like the show never really develops until the second half, and honestly I think the props get in the way of doing potentially more interesting drill. I also don't really like how half the color guard is always staged in the far back of the field, sometimes behind props where they get blocked from view. They are playing pretty well, and the music book is not bad, so maybe that will keep them in the bubble band conversation, but I see them more likely out then in. I don’t understand how people can hate on round rock. They clearly had an amazing run. They put in so much work just for you to say the show was bad. They tried and had an amazing run so post positive stuff and stop spreading hate

Just realized that Rosemount may be performing with the biggest audience in BOA history -All the semifinals bands on the sides waiting for placements -the seats are packed with the families of those bands and more -It’s the grand nats back from a year off
That’ll be a fun time to see, good for em

I've noticed that most shows are 8 to 9 minutes in length, not including any preshow music or guard work. But then a few, like CTJ and BA, run like 10 to 11 minutes. What is the shortest and longest shows possible or historically? Is there a minimum requirement? And do you think a band's show length could affect their scoring/placements in any way.

Is the the full year or just marching band? Also, booster budget or booster and school budget combined. It makes it tough when one tries to account for school contribution to the budget.

The shortest length you can have without penalty is 6 minutes. Maximum is 11. With preshow, BA and CTJ both get into the 13-14 minute range fairly regularly. Show length can affect scoring in all ways. It’s more content, but it’s also more to clean and your kids have to keep stamina up.

i may be bias but crazy proud of how far fishers had come. from their first state finals appearance in 2016 to their first grand nats performance in 2017 they have come a long long way especially after several staff changes and covid complications. not a lot of people have faith in fishers and that blows me away.

Commenting on the design of the show doesn’t really have anything to do with how well the kids are performing.

I have a soft spot for Brownsburg's show. I can't shake this feeling in the pit of my stomach that they might be a sleeper pick for finals. It's unlikely, but anything could happen.

I just love that Brownsburg show. It's beautiful. I really hope this band keeps challenging the regulars in Indiana and beyond. Keep working on that brass program and they'll likely be consistent finalists with this design team. The guard and percussion have made some huge strides (some of my favorite front ensemble writing of the year).
