Gotta make up sleep for that 2 am wake up time somehow lol. That is generally my go to lol. I'll scrub through the parade on YouTube to see the bands. :-P

I'm happy to announce that my alma mater, the Sioux Falls Lincoln High School Patriot Marching Band, will be participating in the 2024 Macy's Parade. This will be their fourth appearance in the Parade following appearances in 1994, 2000, & 2008.

How are bands chosen for the Macy's parade? Finding this historical list of bands on the parade's fan site, I did a search just for Ohio ensembles. The 36 performances listed are a curious mix, with several bands making multiple appearances while many notable Ohio bands (including some with multiple Rose Bowl parade appearances) have never participated. Do the organizers give preferential consideration to pat participants? Anyway, here's the list. I give the band names just as that site lists them: 1968 - Fairfield Union Marching Falcons (Lancaster, OH) -- high school band1971 - Miller's Blackhawks (Dayton, OH) -- twirling corps1972 - Dover H.S. Band (Dover, OH) -- high school band (n)1973 - Wintersville H.S. Band (Wintersville, OH) -- high school band (n)1973 - Mohawk Musical Corps (Garrettsville, OH) -- twirling corps1974 - Massillon Tiger Swing Band (Massillon, OH) -- high school band (n)1976 - Defiance Marching Band of Class (Defiance, OH) -- high school band (n)1977 - Canton South High School Band (Canton, OH) -- high school band (n)1978 - Lancaster H.S. Marching Band of Gold (Lancaster, OH) -- high school band1979 - Boardman H.S. Spartan Marching Band (Boardman, OH) -- high school band (n)1980 - Warren Jr. Military Academy Marching Band (Warren, OH) -- independent band*1981 - Marion L. Steele H.S. Marching Comets (Amherst, OH) -- high school band (n)**1982 - Centerville H.S. Marching Band and Co-Ed Drill Team (Centerville, OH) -- high school band***1985 - Indian Hill H.S. Marching Band (Cincinnati, OH) -- high school band1986 - Defiance Band of Class -- high school band (n) (2nd appearance)1990 - Pickerington Marching Tigers (Pickerington, OH) -- high school band1991 - Boardman Spartan Marching Band (Boardman, OH) -- high school band (n) (2nd appearance)1994 - Defiance H.S. Marching Band of Class -- high school band (n) (3rd appearance)1995 - Pickerington H.S. Marching Tiger Band (Pickerington, OH) -- high school band (2nd appearance)1996 - Bellbrook H.S. Marching Eagles (Bellbrook, OH) -- high school band1999 - Jackson H.S. Purple Army Marching Band (Massillon, OH) -- high school band (n)2000 - Ohio University Marching 110 (Athens, OH) -- college band2001 - Pickerington Central Marching Tigers (Pickerington, OH) -- high school band (3rd appearance)****2002 - Turpin H.S. Marching Band (Cincinnati, OH) -- high school band2003 - Miami University Marching Band (Oxford, OH) -- college band2004 - Warren G. Harding Raider Marching Band (Warren, OH) -- high school band (n)2005 - Ohio University Marching 110 (Athens, OH) -- college band (2nd appearance)2006 - Strongsville H.S. Marching Band (Strongsville, OH) -- high school band (n)2009 - Pickerington Central H.S. Marching Tigers (Pickerington, OH) -- high school band (4th appearance)2011 - Miami University Marching Band (Oxford, OH) -- college band (2nd appearance)2012 - Kenton Ridge H.S. Marching Cougar Band (Springfield, OH) -- high school band2013 - Lakota West Marching Firebirds (West Chester, OH) -- high school band2017 - Ohio University Marching 110 (Athens, OH) -- college band (3rd appearance)2018 - The Ohio State University Marching Band (Columbus, OH) -- college band2021 - Centerville Jazz Band (Centerville, OH) -- high school band (2nd appearance)* I think this has to be The Warren Jr. Military Band, originally (1927) affiliated with a VFW post but independently operated since 1957 (and directed by the same man from 1930 to 1996). The band is not actually connected to any military academy or other school. I never heard of them before today. Wikipedia says the "band today is very active in the summer marching band competition circuit". What's that? ** neop is a more recent alum of this school. *** So named because drill teams then were usually all girls or all boys? *** Note also that this was the first high school band from the southern half of the state in fourteen years. Also it may be noteworthy that most of the northern Ohio bands on this list (which I have marked with an "(n)" above) hail from areas where high school competition bands are scarce. **** Pickerington High School North did not open until 2003, so I believe the "Central" here is a mistake. That site is not without some errors, some apparently stemming from automated updates. For instance, the "Garfield Cadets" are listed, in their 1961 appearance when they were based in New Jersey, as hailing from Erie, Pennsylvania, to which they only moved in 2023.

Macy's website lists this year's lineup (2023) alphabetically. I hope I'm not repeating an earlier post by giving it here:
• Alabama A&M U. Marching Maroon & White (Huntsville, AL) • Fishers H.S. Marching Tiger Band (Fishers, IN) • Greendale H.S. Marching Band(Greendale, WI) • Jenison H.S. Marching Band (Jenison, MI) • Macy's Great American Marching Band • Marjorie Stoneman Douglas H.S. Eagle Regiment (Parkland, FL) • Mercer Island H.S. Marching Band (Mercer Island, WA) • New York Police Department Marching Band (New York, NY) • O'Fallon Township H.S. Marching Panthers (O'Fallon, IL) • Rutgers U. Marching Scarlet Knights (Piscataway, NJ) • Texas Tech U. Goin' Band from Raiderland (Lubbock, TX) • The Band Directors Marching Band*
There's some weirdness in the listings. Some bands have the number of members listed. Others don't. Among those who do, Jenison is described as having "nearly 700" members.
*Huh. Regarding the last group, this is the description: "In 2017, the Michael D. Sewell Memorial Foundation was created to carry on the legacy of the late Mike Sewell, a longtime band director in the Pickerington, Ohio, school system. The foundation’s project, Saluting America's Band Directors™, has been established to bring together band directors and music educators from across the country. This band comprises volunteers who donate their time and expertise to promote the inspirational power of music."
As noted above, Pickerington High School (Central) has marched in the parade four times. This all feels not coincidental.

The preshow last night said Greendale had over 600, so that wouldn’t be an outrageous number.

You’re fortunate… that’s close to a typical travel year for us- slightly higher but not by much. I’d guess NY hotels at the holidays don’t give much of a discount to bands so would have an expected higher price than Indy.
