Campbell County- There's some very cleanly performed parts of this show, especially visually, for mid-September. I find the narration a bit annoying, but some cool visual effects, decent music book, and pretty clean overall performance. Another front runner.
Lakota West- Easily the strongest performance so far both musically and visually. On a side-note, it sounds like Carol Brittain Chambers writes for Lakota West? I forgot who else she writes for, but I know it's some of the big Texas names (CTJ? Hebron?)
Dropping my predictions from the groups I watched (missed basically the entire first block): 1) Lakota West 2) Campbell County 3) Franklin Central 4) Worthington Kilbourne 5) Miamisburg 6) Noblesville 7) Fairfield 8) Central Crossing 9) Milford 10) Christian Academy of Louisville 11) ? 12) ?

Just started tuning in and caught a bit of Milford's show. Think this was the first time I've heard Billie Eilish in a HS marching band show, so that was interesting. Musically it needs a lot of cleaning, but it's still super early in the season. (also side note, first post here since a year ago, so glad to see some familiar names are still here too!) One of the DCA corps two weeks ago played some Billie Eilish, although I can't remember which tune.

I remember seeing a comment responding to the Fairfield band's social media feed nearly ten years ago complaining that they always lost to Lakota West. The more things change?
(Mind you, while I have enjoyed many Fairfield shows over the past decade, in no year did they ever seem as good as West.)

Curious to see if I at least predicted the Top 6 bands correctly (although I know I already put them in the wrong order)

A bit surprised by Campbell County in AA! I had Miamisburg ahead but CC certainly came out strong. Curious if it will hold tonight as well.

A bit surprised by Campbell County in AA! I had Miamisburg ahead but CC certainly came out strong. Curious if it will hold tonight as well. They came out of nowhere for me. I thought they were pretty fantastic and happy for them on the AA title. Worthington Kilbourne is a surprise in 3rd for me, though. I really thought they'd finish above Miamisburg, at least in this point in the season until Miamisburg has had some more time to clean things up.

I do appreciate the live voices in "Einstein on the Beach," although is there any other opera whose marching band version doesn't give all the voice parts from the original work to wind instruments?

From the BOA live blog at the end of Lakota West's show: "It seems like there may be more to add but even if there isn't, the show ends very satisfyingly all the same. What a great performance tonight!"
I can't imagine that show running six minute and one second in length doesn't have at least another two minutes to come. (Their show last year ran 8:02.)
Personally, I respect West's show but at the moment it feels formulaic to me.

Did they do full retreats at regionals last year? This is nice to see.

Did they do full retreats at regionals last year? This is nice to see. They did not! It was drum majors and guard captains only. It is definitely nice to see entire bands on the field again!

I figured it would be more of a placeholder closing moment but it still worked well. I've been running on a little less than 4 hours of sleep because I clearly think I'm still young. Reality determined that that was a lie LOL. But really, congratulations to all of these great bands. Plenty of surprises tonight. What a way to start the BOA season right?!

If you're a director or staff member with access to recaps in competition suite for the other three regionals, and want to share it with me, I will publish those. That's why Columbus results are posted and not the other three regionals.

Hamilton used to be one of Ohio's biggest high schools, so I was surprised to find them in 3A today. When I saw that Lakota East would likely be AAA, I fully expected Hamilton to do so as well. Speaking with the Lakota West director during warmups for finals, I learned that the initial number turned in for West prior to the first day of school was 1853 - just barely above the cut line to AAAA. He was contacted suggesting that they do an audit of the number now that the school year has started.

I know Ohio has seen a huge spike in students leaving public schools and doing full-time online school since the pandemic. Both Hamilton and LW reported over 2,100+ students in grades 9-11 last year and for them to be under 1,850 a year later is crazy.
