This bodes quite nicely for a Hendrickson finish at nationals.

This bodes quite nicely for a Hendrickson finish at nationals. I agree that the show and the relative performance here proves that they can do it. I still wouldn't say I would be confident in them making it in, but I do think they will be right in the mix for the last several spots.

I still wouldn't say I would be confident in them making it in, but I do think they will be right in the mix for the last several spots. with about a month and 2 weeks ish to get it to its apex, the placement isn’t discouraging for them for sure. Maximize the visual product and performance as much as you can, a heightened importance in the Grand Nats endgame. Looking at the finals ordinals for them, they actually made much of their placement in the visual performance and visual GE captions, their music performance lagged a bit behind from the field of finalists with them coming in dead last there, but it’s something that will definitely be shored up and accounting for this finals competition being made up of insanely good music performing ensembles galore, being last of this group isn’t a death sentence. Best of luck to Hendrickson!

Worth noting that Leander was 7th in prelims only .725 behind Rouse. Their finals run must have been uncharacteristically dirty.

Special shout-out to Louis D. Brandeis H.S.
I'm sure they were hoping to make Finals after finishing 2nd overall at McAllen, but Austin is a meatgrinder. Despite not making Finals, my spreadsheet said Brandeis' Austin performance was a full point better than either of their McAllen performances.

Worth noting that Leander was 7th in prelims only .725 behind Rouse. Their finals run must have been uncharacteristically dirty. I actually don’t think that was the case. The biggest thing that brought them down from pre lims to finals was music GE going from 6th down to 12th.I think that had more to do with them being compared side by side with the other bands. It did seem like a less locked in run (especially for the soloists) but some of that was already present in the pre lims recaps like the 15th in ensemble music.

I was at the contest. Leander wasn't uncharacteristically dirty in finals. I think Leander was penalized pretty heavily for the entire last minute of the show being a park and bark. I had Leander a little higher (ahead of Lake Travis and Westwood). When they moved they were good. With the last minute being stationary I can see the judges not wanting to reward that with GE. The sound of the last minute wasn't that traditional Leander sound. Something was off and I couldn't put my finger on it during the show. It seems like they may have just incorporated that into the show and not learned the drill will enough to put into competition yet. They will be just fine this season. The program is great at adjusting and adding.
Cedar Ridge and Cedar Park were both amazing. Both school's students have really embraced the shows and it comes through in the performances. Cedar Ridge was really technically on top of everything they did last night, even moreso than in prelims. What a great show. Cedar Park's use of mirrors for reflection and concealment as well as using the junior varsity to help push general effect is really breathtaking in person. And they are marching a lot more brass than normal and pushing sound out like they never have before. They also are giving their brass much more technical and modern licks than in recent previous years. I think this is the closest that either school have been to Vandy in few years.
I thoroughly enjoyed Vista Ridge. They have a great sound and of course massive props. Rouse is doing what Rouse is getting known for. Individual and ensemble performance at a high level. High level of execution. It's nice to see Round Rock moving and playing like this again. Oh, and the uniform change may not last past this season. Westlake has a great drill and a very sophisticated sound. Bowie has rebounded with a smartly designed show. It was no shock to see them back in the top 10. Hendrickson's high energy show is going to clean up nicely as they push towards Grand Nats. It was quite entertaining and the crowd really ate it up. Westwood's use of blocks is fun. There were a few issues where simultaneously the movement and the sound got muddled. They will clean that up as the year progresses.

yeah.. we were there. Leander was a total surprise... across the board this is not at the level we are used to ...musically, visually and overall general effect... hopefully a finished show will be the difference. we're just assuming there is much more work to be done there... or.. could just be a young peeps. couldn't possibly know... only based on our experience.

It’s the nature of the activity. Staff changes, higher and lower recruitment and retention from year to year, some designs not translating from paper to field as well as was originally thought. Every program goes through it. 10 years ago you would have been laughed off of the forums for saying CP would miss SA finals but that did happen in 18 and 19. Now look at where they are. Leander will be just fine.

We'll see if future performances improve their odds any. But as of right now, the math suggests they have a long row to hoe.

I'm very proud of Vista Ridge's result here after having to completely re-learn the Part 3 music the week of the contest. What a week for those kids.
