Today is the WGI Kansas City Regional! I noticed there wasn’t a thread for this one, and while it definitely won’t be attracting the same amount of attention as a larger competition, I wanted to go ahead and create a thread for it anyways. We’ll see a few of these groups in Dayton!
Some notable BOA names attending this regional are Blue Springs HS, Blue Springs South HS, Fort Zumwalt North HS, Grain Valley HS, and Nixa HS. Bellevue West HS has been competitive in WGI for a number of years. Notably absent are Camdenton HS, who has been retreating from the WGI scene recently, and Kickapoo HS, who has a phenomenal Open Class team, but isn’t here or Tulsa. Perhaps it has something to do with their increased competitive BOA season?
I’m also a little surprised to not see Ozark HS here, who regularly competes at WGI Springfield. I’m hoping the location change, if this regional remains in Kansas City, attracts some more northern HS groups. In the Independent category, all of Missouri State’s fantastic guards are here, as well as Ionic out of Mizzou.
I’m running social media for WGI on all channels today, but I’ll try to share some of my thoughts when I get breaks. Happy winter guard day!

First round of thoughts:
Fox HS was phenomenal in their WGI debut. I’m a huge fan of Zachary Barber’s design choices, and if this past BOA season is anything to go off of, I imagine we will consider him one of the great names in show design very soon.
Blue Springs Varsity was INCREDIBLE! This is probably my favorite Blue Springs HS production since their fall 2017 show. The color palette and design decisions for both this group and Grain Valley HS (who was also amazing- more on that later) really show an impeccable understanding of design and elegance. The two are incredibly different shows, but share an exceptional flag work technique and both have props that extend the floor design into the vertical plane (and it looks SO good). Blue Springs never fails to deliver. I’m notorious for picking on Vento designs in the fall, but in the winter they’re consistent some of the best A Class designs of the season. Grain Valley’s color palette reminds me a lot of Mustang’s 2020 show, but I think they’re succeeding in a few areas that Mustang just wasn’t able to (though I’m still upset that missed Tulsa finals!) Altogether, there are some super solid designs for so early in the season, and I look forward to seeing how they grow over the next couple of months.

And a huge score for Blue Springs. Their 81.940 should put them as the no. 1 seed for world championships after this weekend's contests unless something crazy happens in Indianapolis today. (If they don't get bumped to Open)

(If they don't get bumped to Open) Unfortunately, per WGI's list of Current Entries, it doesn't appear that Blue Springs will be attending Dayton. It looks like their only other WGI competition for the season will be at WGI Tulsa (where they're still listed as Scholastic A).

Blue Springs Varsity has been promoted to Scholastic Open. Without Kickapoo performing this year, they are currently the only SO guard in the state.
Congratulations to this guard- this was 100% deserved after the show they delivered last week!
