Castle H.S., IN — “The Count” Without the show artwork you could think of a variety of ways this concept could be executed. 😂 *laughs in Sesame Street* The artwork on their FB page looks very number-y....

Boise H.S., ID: Thor's HammerJerome H.S., ID: Thor's HammerThat's very awkward. The two schools are less than two hours apart from each other and I imagine will compete together at least once. Similar but different to the Prosper and James Martin show title #twinning, as those programs very likely have custom-designed programs with two different design teams who had no idea what the other was doing, whereas the two Idaho programs likely bought the show from the same box show company.

It’s a Randall Standridge package which has been a big hit this season, you’ll likely see it at least once in any part of the country you’re in. He does a lot of ‘flex’ shows with simplified orchestration that can be adapted to small or unusual instrumentations, and coming out of COVID that niche in the market is quite large.

I still believe regional/state exclusivity should be implemented by any box show company or single show designer. It’s one thing for the same show to be performed in different states, or even opposite ends of the same state that doesn’t have a State contest. But to be within each other’s competitive sphere is a whole other thing.

Iirc a small school also did Yee Haw in 2019 but I can’t remember if it was the same show or just the same title (or maybe a similar show with a different title). I would love if anyone else knew what I’m talking about because I can’t recall the details or find the message from the student that was telling me about it 😅
I’ve seen shows that my high school performed years after we did them because we used Will Pitts as our arranger (you can find several of them for sale on his website), but the same package in the same competitive circle is a bit excessive. I agree that a certain radius where schools can’t use the same package makes a lot of sense, but I have no idea how it would actually be implemented.

The designer or company should say “I am so sorry, but this show is currently unavailable in your location. May I interest you in one of our other options?”

For instance, you might ask a client, "Hey, what shows are you going to?" but they change their mind later. Perhaps these two Thor's Hammer groups simply aren't attending the same shows.

I am not saying there was any purposeful intention. Randall is great. It’s very possible that they won’t be competing at the same show(s) this year. I’m just saying, it’s happened many times before where someone makes an oopsie.

If a school wants their students performing a specific packet or show then let them to do so. It’s all for fun after all, no need to first-come-first-serve gatekeep a fun show design. It’s all in good fun, and these bands are trying as hard as they can as they are their directors deserve the right to choose a program they think fits.

No one said it was a big deal and I’d hardly go as far to say that it’s gatekeeping. It’s just awkward when multiple bands show up at the same contest performing the same show. Most directors and designers do in fact want to avoid this, trivial as it may seem.
