Carmel H.S., IN — “Vitruvian” Featuring Barber’s First Symphony. Barber’s First Symphony is probably my favorite classical piece. I am soooooo excited to see Carmel’s take on this. Completes the Indiana trifecta, with Lawrence Central and Avon having previously played it. LC’s version is by far my favorite of any band that has performed it (liked it more than SCV). It was probably one of the most overplayed Barber pieces (along with Medea) in the late 90s/2000’s, but If anyone is going to dust it off and bring it back, I’m happy it’s Carmel. It really needs a band with a full, controlled and balanced musical style to pull it off. Looking forward to the oboe solo, and I hope they include the 4th movement which I don’t think other bands in the past have performed.

Last I remember playing that piece was Avon, but unfortunately I have only been able to catch GN finals and on occasion semis the last decade or so. Still really excited to see Carmel play it tho.

Easily my favorite show of the threepeat and one of my all time favorites. Carmel has some high expectations to live up to but if there’s anyone that can tackle Barber it’s them

Avon is obviously very impressive still, but Avon during their threepeat was just sooo top notch.

Avon '09 was a looooong time ago haha Of course being the band nerd I am I was thinking back to when Avon and Mason played it and I think Mason’s was actually my favorite interpretation. Of course Avon had more volume but Mason’s was very very clean and just was subtlety beautiful the whole way through. Both shows with sky high demand but I also liked Mason’s down ending more. Ever since Carmels 2015 and 2016 shows saucedo has gotten so much better at arranging more mainstream music that just generates better effect IMO. Of course they won championships in 05 and 12 but these newer shows have way better music effect than the past shows as they have kept their sound style and rhythms that saucedo is famous for yes, but are using more of the source music to drive it. Kinda butchered that explanation but I think you all know what I am talking about lol

I’m totally going to get clobbered for saying this, but I’m tired of classical music on the football field. I absolutely love it in concert band season, but it puts me to sleep in a marching contest. Not always, of course. I’m still a huge fan of Vandegrift’s 2017 Symphony of Silence! But in general during marching season? 😴😴

Not always, of course. I’m still a huge fan of Vandegrift’s 2017 Symphony of Silence! But in general during marching season? 😴😴 I wouldn’t say I am tired of it, (in fact I quite prefer it usually) but I am tired of the same pieces being used over and over. For classical music to work on the field it REALLY needs to have a great energy to it in order for it to be successful (like shos. 10th) - which is why so many bands play the same songs because there are only so many to choose from (so they think). But I think choosing safe classical music that has been done many times is also risky since it has been done so many times and can become blah…. thus maybe losing effect. Obviously Carmel and saucedo don’t care, but I would argue there is tons of classical music out there that does have a great energy to it that isn’t being used… might have to dig through spotify but it is there!

There is also non-classical music that can generate great effect… like cycle song from BD 2019.
Ironically when we start to discuss going the other way to pop music (say Leander 2019 Toxic by Brittany), I do think arrangers have to be really careful how they arrange it because classical music usually has the effect built in so they don’t have to change much since it was already written for a band, but it seems to be a bit more work to get the same effect out of pop music from an arrangement POV. We don’t want college band vibes… not that Leander 2019 gave me that lol

Not always, of course. I’m still a huge fan of Vandegrift’s 2017 Symphony of Silence! But in general during marching season? 😴😴 Mostly agree, but something to consider is that most classical music falls in the public domain so it doesn’t come with the exorbitant copyright costs that some programs can’t afford (not that Carmel has that issue). To echo others’ thoughts above, I do wish there were a wider variety of classical music on the field. There’s a gold mine of untapped classical music to be arranged. Yes, the ones that are typically used generate a lot of effect and are the most recognizable, but they can only be arranged so many ways — and sometimes not even then — so hearing multiple bands do basically the same arrangement just gets stagnant.

I love Carmel and I love Barber but Barber's 1st is Fly to Paradise/Appalachian Spring tier of annoyingly overused.
Avon played did it the best at a HS level and Cadets did it the best at a corps level just a few years later. So, unless Carmel does anything that variates from the show formula that those two used I can't imagine that they'll be too big of a fan favorite this year

I wish they'd shake it up a tad instead of having such dry but professional shows but I can't hate it tm if it's getting them a medalist basically every year

Sounds like Norwin and Oak Ridge are hoping for their show themes to carry them upward in the competition this season?

Sounds like Norwin and Oak Ridge are hoping for their show themes to carry them upward in the competition this season? It worked in 2017 when Grain Valley’s show was titled “What Goes Up”…maybe there’s some untapped psychological potential to this
