Not a school name, but the mascot for Watersmeet HS in Michigan is the "Nimrods". You won't beat the school mascots in Illinois. - Hoopeston Area Cornjerkers
- Centralia Orphans (girls' teams are Orphan Annies)
- Freeport & New Berlin Pretzels
- Cobden Appleknockers
- Teutopolis Wooden Shoes
- Polo Marcos
- Effingham Flaming Hearts
- Zion-Benton Zee-Bees
I have purchased alcohol in Hoopeston and may have absconded with a light up snowman.

Robstown is pretty crazy... now look up Pekin, IL until approximately 1980 or so when it was changed. Just nuts... Speaking of nuts, there's a certain art school in New England that made some interesting anatomical choices in their team and mascot names.

As I suspected in 2021, PLVS is in fact a Wes-designed group now. Really excited to see this one!

Del Norte H.S., Crescent City, CA: "A Pirate Adventure"
Beaverton H.S., Beaverton, OR: "Modern Romance" Phoenix H.S., Phoenix, OR: "Encounters" South Albany H.S., Albany, Or: "The Dark Side of The Box" Sunset H.S., Portland, OR: "Luminous" Tigard H.S., Tigard, OR: "Women in Pop"
A.C. Davis H.S., Yakima, WA: "Dreams Through the Eyes of an Artist" Bonney Lake H.S., Bonney Lake, WA: "Lunar Tides" Cle Elum H.S., Cle Elum, WA: "Haunted" Eisenhower H.S., Yakima, WA: "Primal" Highland H.S., Cowiche, WA: "Back to the Future" Kamiakin H.S., Kennewick, WA: "The Ripple Effect" Naches Valley H.S., Naches Valley, WA: "Secret Agents" Oak Harbor H.S., Oak Harbor WA: "SPACE" Pasco H.S., Pasco, WA: "The Beauty of Planet Earth" River Ridge H.S, Olympia, WA: "Alice in Bandland" Wenatchee H.S, Wenatchee, WA: "Starcrossed"
Lots of bands dropped their themes recently. A.C. Davis is the band to watch in this list. Typically fielding about 150-160 kids year to year. For Washington standards, that's big. However, they still got ten pointed into second place by Kamiak H.S. last year, who only had 91 members compared to Davis' 165. It'll be interesting to see what happens this year. I'd love to give my two cents on the general state of marching band in the PNW, and who to watch, but I'm not sure this is the right place to get into all that nerdiness.

Nordonia H.S. in Macedonia, OH: "Together"
The repertoire includes The Turtles song "Happy Together" (Garry Bonner & Alan Gordon), "Night on Bald Mountain" (Modest Mussorgsky), and the Justin Bieber song "Lonely" (Justin Bieber, Benjamin Levin & Finneas O'Connell).
That's as announced at a recent Nordonia halftime performance. I'm curious as to whether the tuba soloist on the Turtles tune is the same who soloed on Mozart's "Queen of the Night" in last year's show.
(FYI, the school is Nordonia High School. The district is the Nordonia Hills City School District, which encompasses not only Macedonia but Northfield Village and Sagamore Hills Township -- those three are the source of the district name -- as well as parts of adjacent townships in Summit County, the county where Akron is located.)

Big deal this one. Arguably the best marching band in the northwest corner of the country. I'd love to see them go to Grand Nats one day.

Oak Ridge, TX: "Up, Up and Away!" Musical selections include: Aurora Awakes by John Mackey Firefly by Ryan George Finale of East of Eden by Lee HoldridgeTo Tame The Perilous Skies by David Holsinger There was a fellow on another forum who for years called for drum corps to put that Holdridge piece on the field, and I remember how thrilled he was when Phantom Regiment included it in their 2011 show ( Juliet). It's from a 1981 television adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel that starred Jane Seymour, Bruce Boxleitner, and Timothy Bottoms. Now I'm imagining a show titled "Boxleitner, Seymour, and Bottoms" that could use this piece as well as themes from Tron (for Boxleitner), The Paper Chase (for Bottoms -- with a little-known score by John Williams), and Live and Let Die plus, if it weren't already overplayed, Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (both for Seymour -- the latter for its use in Somewhere in Time). That wouldn't be any more obscure than a number of shows that corps and bands have staged over the years.

Always appreciate when bands perform the lesser known (and imo superior) movements from the planets.
