Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand they’re back again. And they're replacing the garish mid 90's page graphics with something more soothing!

They'll probably get the website fully updated and running and then forget to renew their SSL cert again.

Aaaand we still don't have the adjudication handbook. 🙄 After adding the exceptions information, I started to type "Of course, the website still says that the 2023 Adjudication Handbook..."

Aaaand we still don't have the adjudication handbook. 🙄 I would hope there are no major rule changes that would cause major design/props changes this late in the game....does the 2023 exist and known to directors but just not on the website?

It's up!
Basic changes:
-Grand Nationals semifinals performance order change:
-The 11 highest scoring bands in each prelim, regardless of class, will receive the 22 slots in the middle of semi-finals (slots 9-30).
-The next 8 highest scoring bands, regardless of class, will receive slots 1-8.
-The 2 highest scoring bands, from each class, from each prelim, if they are not among the top 30, will perform after the 30 performance spots.
-A Band is allowed four (4) minutes to set-up and/or warm-up anywhere in the Performance Area. The placement of any staging/props or equipment must take place during this time. Bands should not rely on any allowance of additional time, prior to the 4-minute set-up, for the movement or assembly of any staging/props. Directors are asked to plan accordingly. This time will include the Band’s entry and set-up on the Performance Field and may include a musical warm-up. The 4-minute set-up will begin at the cue of a Bands of America official. -Bands are allowed a Performance time of 6 to 11 minutes anywhere on and within the Performance Field. Performance timing will end at the conclusion of live music. Exception: Minimum performance time penalties will not be assessed at Bands of America Regional Championships prior to October 1. Field Managers will still time, log, and report timings during these early season championships.

Scenario: Band 1 finishes 15th on their panel, 30th overall on Thu/Fri. Advances as part of "next 8", only band in their class to make semis as part of top 30. Band 2 in same class finishes 16th on the same panel, 31st overall in prelims. Advances as "class qualifier".
Band 1 performs 7am Band 2 performs 4pm
Band 2 wins class due to favorable performance time

Scenario: Due to competitive imbalance between which bands end up on each panel... Band 3 finishes 12th on their panel, 16th overall in prelims, with a score which shows they could have a reasonable chance of advancing to finals.
Band 3 now performs at 8:00am, while those within their score range in prelims perform at 2:30pm and 3:00pm type times.
Band 3 finishes 23rd because the judges have to account for so many still to come later in the day.

Band 3 finishes 23rd because the judges have to account for so many still to come later in the day. In 2022, Centerville and Morton were in the top 22 and had performance times reflecting this. James F. Byrnes and Lincoln-Way were outside the top 22 and got "outside 8" time slots. JFB actually benefitted because their time slot in the "outside 8" was AFTER the top 22 and they rode the favorable slot to 14th in semifinals. In 2021, Mustang and Centerville were top 22 overall in prelims but not top 11 on their panel, whereas Cleveland (25th) and Jenison (27th) were top 11 on the other panel. Defining the 22 "best" semifinal spots based on 11 per panel is less than ideal. Having all 8 of the "other 8" grouped together is an improvement over the "four before and four after" of the past.

Other way around for me. As they said in the handbook: Also, the class representatives (for once) will actually have a large audience! So in this scenario, is it possible for a band being punished for placing in the top 30? Murray 2021 is a perfect example. In this scenario, they would have been performing 9 hours before every other band in their class because they broke into the top 30.

No tickets for St. Louis Suoer Regional yet either. I feel like stuff always comes out late for this competition every year, for some reason.

It was originally scheduled for the weekend of the 16th.

Interesting to note: BOA is providing online video links to bands for educational purposes. No more band videographer passes allowed.
Also, "Break Ranks", the Dan Potter led podcast, is returning.

At $325 for St. Louis and San Antonio. Yeah that’s a hard pass for me too. I was thinking about it but I much prefer sitting down below the box at San Antonio with the peasants. 😁
