Remember when The Colony H.S. flew from Alaska to perform at Grand Nats in 2015? By miles, that’s got to be the furthest ever for any method of travel. Yay! But iwasinbandbackthen said for a normal Regional not GN, and he said this year which we missed reading.

You can do that, but it’s not the question I asked. And I think it may already have been answered. I asked what’s the furthest someone had traveled for a regional this year other than Fort Mill. It has not been definitively answered, but I think my best guess may be Sapulpa, as they are just short of 1,000 miles from Flagstaff.

I think this is more amazing that it’s happening at a western regional where the states are much bigger. Using the shortest routes on Google Maps, the closest top 7 band to Flagstaff was 133 miles away. Five out of the top seven were more than 400 miles away. American Fork - 491 miles Vista Murietta - 454 miles Clovis - 544 miles Fossil Ridge - 732 miles Mountain Ridge - 133 miles Foothill - 237 miles Sapulpa - 961 miles Also, besides Fort Mill going to St. George, what’s the furthest distance someone is traveling to attend a regional this year? Broken Arrow to Orlando has to be one of the longest besides Fort Mill to St George. And I think it may already have been answered. Why did they make the awards drum majors only? I imagine couldn't have kids outside to do the big line up with lightning.

Off topic. But I think the furthest HS band to compete in America was in 2015 USBands Yamaha Cup in September when St. Joseph Secondary School from Malaysia traveled to East Rutherford, NJ they got first place too in Group III - A. They traveled 9,489 miles.
Scores - Group III A:
90.100: Saint Joseph Secondary School, MY
79.538: East Brunswick, NJ
78.625: Kittatinny Regional, NJ

The top 5 were pretty much what I expected but everyone else was definitely not. I totally underrated Foothill but after seeing them last night during finals they easily deserved their spot!

In the West, anything under 500 miles is almost considered "local" whereas in much of the East, anything over 100 miles is "a long trip." I've lived both places - an 8 hour trip is "nothing" vs. "SOOOOO long."

I used to live in Las Vegas and you could make it to LA, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, and San Diego within six hours. In Denver you can maybe make it to Albuquerque. I could see Clovis or American Fork coming to a Colorado regional. Maybe Bellevue West (they went to Midland once) or a Kansas City area band. That being said, Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins (the new home of Drums Along the Rockies) would be a great regional venue.

When I worked in bands in the Las Vegas area, it wasn’t unusual for us to do a competition in Southern California as a day trip.

I would love to see a Denver area regional. I think metro Denver has a lot of bands that could make for an exciting regional, perhaps pulling in some Utah bands and some of the bands from NW Texas.

Another interesting fact: because American Fork was at this regional, this weekend marked the first UMEA competition in over a decade (that I know of) in which the highest-scoring band was *not* American Fork. I know they haven't missed a single competition prior to this since 2016 at least!
Does anyone know the last time this happened before? I could just check World of Pageantry, but I'm kind of busy.

I think it could too. Just based on the number of schools in Colorado that have attended a BOA event in the last 5 or so competitive years plus it being a good destination I think the regional would fill. I imagine the bands that have done BOA would do it if it didn't cost so much to travel. Off the top I can think of the following schools that have attended a BOA recently (or are this year): Air Academy Fossil Ridge Harrison Loveland Legacy Rampart Lakewood Legend D'Evelyn Fairview Montezuma-Cortez Liberty Pine Creek 13 Bands that have taken on pretty large financial and logistical challenges to attend. I could totally see the other groups such as Mesa Ridge (big WGI presence), Cherry Creek, Monarch, Centaurus, Horizon, Littleton, and Fountain Fort Carson being interested if it was a day trip. That's 20. Maybe pulling some western slope like Fruita, Central of Grand Junction, and Montrose? Out of state I think realistically New Mexico, NW Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Utah? Well even Blue Springs MO is less far to Denver than the Colorado schools drove for BOA this year. Could you imagine getting like Blue Springs, Jenks, Clovis, and American Fork etc to Denver?!?! What a dream it would be!

This isn't a heavy confirmation at all, but BOA is very well aware of the BOA interest from the Rockies, so a Denver regional may happen sooner or later.
And if it wasn't obvious from St. George enrollments the last few years and as hewhowaits says, a Super Regional also may happen in the near future.
So... Hold onto the hope. I highly suggest any Rockies-area band directors talk to Cam Stasa at MFA and express your interest/commitments for something like these along the lines in the future.

What a dream it would be! Montezuma-Cortez is actually slightly closer to St. George than Denver, plus the drive is a lot less treacherous. Also, a Front Range regional would really be best in late September. The further into October we go, the greater the chance of snow making travel through the high country challenging. Also, October is a crazy weather month along the Front Range. It could be 80 and sunny like it was today or it could be snowing. CBA 4A/5A was canceled due to snow in 2019 and it would have been canceled again 2020 for snow if COVID didn’t do it in first.
