I think Clover SC is somewhat of an underdog. All they really need is a good show. They did well in performance captions all year last year. I think they are set to have a school split in 2025, but that still gives them a few strong years.

Lambert GA is another I think has all the makings of a great program. Pretty big school, wealthy area, good academics. They have the Crown guy as their director now since 2021 name is escaping me but he was at Catawba Ridge as assistant before the Ardrey Kell crew came in.

Marian Catholic. They got raked across the coals by Jackie Gilley at ISU Finals and National prelims this past year, and had their lowest placing at ISU since at least the 90's (my ISU records aren't complete), and their lowest showing at Nationals, in well, ever. Hoping they're able to get to at least one regional this year before Nationals, because, let's be honest, judges at most of the Chicago area shows outside of ISU (and a few selected judges here and there) aren't the greatest.
They've had a rough couple of years with parishes merging in the Chicago archdiocese and the Catholic schools closing (which hinders their enrollment), but I'm hoping they're able to return to regional finals and GN semifinals.

I saw both of their performances at Johnson City last year and a third time at a local show a couple weeks later. The show was ok but they performed the heck out of it. Definitely a case of a band outperforming their show design.

What bands do we feel will surprise us this coming 2023 season? Can be BOA level or state level I dont want to hype up my own band but McKinney Boyd I feel is going to be pretty strong next year, they are losing alot of seniors but the feeders are getting stronger, and the teaching methods this year put them well above where they were before in just one year, and people typically put Boyd low in predictions and almost always over perform expectations, I can see them comfortably advancing to finals in BOA Prosper and honestly making state prelims again. McKinney North is also going to be pretty strong considering how much they appeared out of nowhere last year, if they play their cards right could see them making state again even assuming Wakeland times their show properly.

Independence, VA will definitely turn some heads this season. Being able to go from a new school in 2019 to grabbing 2nd at BOA Mid-Atlantic over such names as James Madison and Fort Mill just 3 years later is quite significant. With inevitably better show designs and so many bodies on the field, they will certainly contend for the Virginia state title as they did this past season, and just maybe be able to pick up a BOA regional in the next few years. If they choose to attend GN, they would likely have an inside shot at making semis on score depending on the competition.

I think Bartlett, TN is a bit of an underdog this year. They are going to what I think is their first Grand Nats ever after a stellar breakout performance last year. While the semi-finals pool might not be as deep as last year's, I think they're in a position to turn some heads.

McNeil High School, Austin Texas. They took a nice step forward last year. That was good to see.

Lakewood has good potential. So does Loveland, they just need to play better. Fossil Ridge was very good too and of course Legacy is coming off a decent GN prelims finish. I'm sure that will make their next season quite strong.

Volcano Vista (NM) have a good chance to do good thing this year. If they continue their upward trajectory they could challenge Cleveland (NM) and Clovis (NM).

My picks in no particular order
- Barlett TN - Hernando MS - Timber Creek FL - Walled Lake MI - Independence VA - As in most years, there will be Texas band I was not expecting, I just don't know which one yet (so many to choose from).

Yeah Independence VA is going to do great things if they can get a little cleaner, I dream of the day that they do something big(maybe Mid-atlantic region, maybe grand nats semis, you never know) and i can claim that me and my mid high school competed against them in 2019 and finished within a couple points(given that it was their first year as a school).

McNeil High School, Austin Texas. I'd echo this, throw in Tom Glenn as well since they had an absolutely stunning program last fall and if they continue on their current trajectory, they'll be a force to be reckoned with in due time. Out west, Abilene Wylie could see some improvement with directors from previously successful programs such as Caprock (Amarillo) and Panhandle.

Volcano Vista (NM) have a good chance to do good thing this year. If they continue their upward trajectory they could challenge Cleveland (NM) and Clovis (NM). VVHS also won NM state concert band against Cleveland (NM) so they definitely could challenge next year🗿. Keep an eye on BOA Las Cruces.

My thoughts from an Oklahoma standpoint:
Deer Creek H.S., OK: Excited to see what they do at the Indy Super Regional this year! After a strong first showing at GN last season, I think they are a finalist contender for sure.
Coweta H.S., OK: Sad to see that they aren't attending any BOA shows this year, but I could see Coweta really coming back into prominence now that they are a Wes band and starting to find their footing with the new directors.
Sapulpa H.S., OK: Made some big improvements at 5A OBA last year, excited to hopefully see continued development. 5A is going to be a bloodbath this year!
Edmond Santa Fe H.S., OK: They might not even be considered an underdog anymore given their 6th place finish at OBA last year, but I am expecting great things again from them this year. Will they keep pushing higher? I think so!
Harrah H.S., OK: A smaller band on the outskirts of OKC, they made their first OBA appearance last year. I think they might be able to break into the top half this year as I have heard they are continuing to grow at a rapid pace.
Should be another exciting year in Oklahoma!
