He’s only the second head director in a row, because James Rivera, Yukon’s current head, was at Piedmont as the head since 14 or 15 until he left in summer of 22 to go to Yukon. Rivera came to Piedmont in 2016 as an assistant director. He became the head in the spring of 2018 after the head director at the time left for a music position in Colorado. Then Brown took over after he left at the end of the 21-22 school year. So my math is a little off, but still, three head directors gone within five years is not good news. That much upheaval isn’t great for any program. I agree with that.

Marian Catholic Director of Bands Greg Bimm Announces Retirement
Bimm to Continue as a Consultant and in an Emeritus Role in Advancement
Chicago Heights, Ill. – March 29, 2023 – It is with mixed emotions that Marian Catholic High School announces the retirement of Director of Bands Greg Bimm. Mr. Bimm, who has been a Marian Catholic staff member for 46 years and has led the Marian Catholic Marching Band to seven Bands of America (BOA) Grand National Championships and 42 state titles in class, will retire at the end of the current school year in June. Mr. Bimm will remain in an emeritus role in the advancement office, as well as serve as a consultant to the band program and write shows. The position for a new band director will be posted on the Marian Catholic website. "Greg is a recognized trailblazer in high school and college marching bands, but he will never tell you that,” said Marian Catholic High School President Vince Krydynski, a 1981 graduate of the high school. “He is the gold standard of what it means to be a gentleman and an educator of supreme dignity and grace. Greg has had a profound impact on nearly five decades of students. It’s always been more than producing beautiful music, mastering complex maneuvers, or winning awards. For Greg, it’s always been about teaching young people to take responsibility for their decisions and to constantly work to be better tomorrow than they are today.” Bobby Lambert, Director of Bands at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and former Assistant Director of Bands at Marian Catholic, added, “Greg Bimm is not only legendary at Marian, but he is also prolific in the band world. He revolutionized student leadership and student care to a level unseen before. The vast majority of band directors employ systems or standards originated by Greg.” Mr. Bimm joined the Marian Catholic staff in 1977 as the Director of Bands. During his 46 years, the school’s band program grew from 70 students to 300 students at its peak and earned a national reputation as one of the premier high school band programs in the United States. Under Mr. Bimm’s leadership, Marian Catholic has earned 1st Place in its class at the Illinois State Marching Band Championships every year since 1980, a 42-year winning streak that is unprecedented in any arena. Last fall, the marching band received the highest scores in Class 3A in Illinois for Music Performance, Visual Performance and Effect. The Marian Catholic Marching Band has been named a BOA Grand National Champion seven times; BOA Summer National Champion five times; and BOA Class AA National Champion 23 times in 36 appearances, a record unmatched by any other high school band in the country. It has also performed in two Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade and the 2000 Presidential Inauguration Parade. The Marian Catholic Symphonic Band has been undefeated since 1981 at the State of the Art Catholic High School Band Contest. Marian has been named Honor Band in their class at the University of Illinois SuperState Concert Band a record 10 times. “There is no way in just a few words to encapsulate my feelings of 46 years here at Marian. It has been everything and more than I envisioned for my career,” Mr. Bimm said. “Marian has always been so supportive of me, the band, and the arts in general. When you combine that support with intelligent, hardworking, upward- looking students and dedicated parents, you get a real recipe for success and a recipe for a very happy home for a band director! That said, time is inevitable,” Mr. Bimm added. “After much deep reflection, I know that this is the right time for me to step aside and allow new young talent to ‘run with the ball.’” Current Assistant Director of Bands Jeremy Turner studied under Mr. Bimm when he was a student at Marian Catholic. He graduated from Marian Catholic in 2009. Mr. Turner said, “You never really stop being a student of Greg Bimm. Even as a colleague and a friend, you never stop learning from him.” When asked about the future of the band program, Mr. Turner commented, “Greg Bimm’s legacy is the lessons taught about empathy, humanity, responsibility and the relentless pursuit of excellence, lessons all taught through music, dance and art. Carrying on that legacy will always start with continuing to build good people.” While retiring as Director of Bands, Mr. Bimm will continue to serve as a consultant for the band program and write shows. Additionally, Mr. Bimm will have a part-time, emeritus position within the advancement office, where he will engage the community and advise on special initiatives. “The emeritus role allows Marian Catholic to recognize and thank Greg for his 46 years of service and affords him the opportunity to remain connected to the school and the thousands of people he knows through the Marian Catholic Bands,” President Krydynski said. “His willingness to serve as an emeritus is a huge blessing.” Mr. Lambert added, “Now Greg embarks on another journey to continue helping Marian to thrive while also imparting his knowledge and experience directly to programs across the country. Marian will always feel the influence of this great teacher, as will the profession of music education.” Plans are being finalized to raise funds to create the first-ever endowed position at Marian Catholic in Mr. Bimm’s name. The endowment would fund the Director of Bands position, demonstrating Marian Catholic’s commitment to the band program and ensuring its strength for years to come. Any other plans to recognize Mr. Bimm and the accomplishments of the Marian Catholic Bands will be shared at a later date with alumni and friends of the program. About Greg Bimm As a young band director, Mr. Bimm received the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA) Stanbury Award (1983). In addition to being elected to the prestigious American Bandmasters Association in 1994 and being the first high school band director in 25 years to be invited to conduct the Illinois All-State Band in 1995, Mr. Bimm was among the first to be awarded the Mary Hoffman Award of Excellence by the Illinois Music Educators Association (1999). He received the Sudler Order of Merit from the John Philip Sousa Foundation in 1991 and 1997, and in 2005, was inducted into the Music for All Hall of Fame, which recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact on music education in America. In 2006 he was named a Lowell Mason Fellow by the National Association for Music Education and was presented with the Distinguished Service Award by the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2010. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Illinois State University College of Fine Arts Hall of Fame in 2010 and was the first active band director awarded the Chicagoland Music Educator John Paynord Lifetime Achievement Award (2013). Mr. Bimm was also the first recipient of the Fine Arts Achievement Award in Marian Catholic’s Hall of Fame. Mr. Bimm holds degrees from Illinois State and Western Illinois Universities and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music Education from the Vandercook College of Music. In addition to his role as Director of Bands, Mr. Bimm has performed as conductor, clinician, adjudicator, drill writer, and music arranger throughout the United States and Canada. Professional affiliations include the American Bandmasters Association, the American School Band Directors Association, the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA), the National Association for Music Education, the National Catholic Band Association, the National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu, and Phi Mu Alpha. He has served on the Illinois High School Association Music Advisory Committee, and has served as Band Division chairman, District I and state equipment manager for ILMEA. Since I am late to the game on this and overlooked it in the forums, I thought I would elevate the post again. This is a very big end of era moment not just for Marian but also for BOA.

They are also utilizing a very well regarded program coordinator (at least for Indiana) as well so there are a lot of very good pieces in place for Homestead. Considering all of the excitement that has begun being generated between the staff and kids now, it is slightly surprising that no one (checks announcement page) has tried to announce or leak what their show is..

Bourbon County got a new Director of bands, Mr. Taylor Cook, he came from Cumberland County where he served as Director of Bands since 2020 and was assistant director for Harlan County HS and Cumberland County too. http://instagr.am/p/CrEUO5QLP1Q and huge staff change. New drill writer, saxophone tech, new front ensemble tech, low brass tech, and visual techs, and percussion head Interesting. Cumberland was pretty good last season under Mr Cook, but very, very small. Like, small for Kentucky… in BOA terms… I don’t know, microscopic? Like, Texas would look at that group of humans and say, “Is that your third trumpets? Seem kinda small.” Harlan, his previous gig, also tiny. Interesting to see how he adapts to the much larger, and higher expectation program at Bourbon. I see he went to Lindsey Wilson College… part of that Tim Allen Adair lineage? They’ve produced some great directors. Not so fast. He backed out and took the position at LaRue County.

Larue County is a solid band program, but from the outsiders perspective, BoCo would seem to be a much better situation. However given that the assistant position is also open at BoCo, it leads one to suspect there are issues not visible from the outside. Lots of turmoil in a short amount of time for the kids at Bourbon.

The social media posting that was shared was from an outgoing family (senior student). Fragile egos may have been in play there for sure. The rest of the band is quietly scared out of their collective minds given he's coming from a program that absolutely did not come near matching what Homestead does every year. I think it should be understandable that kids who committed to the work Homestead's program takes do not want to spend their years in high school being this man's training ground years. The parents have a right to be upset and question the process. The school board provided zero answers - including to the pointed questions that two different panels interviewed candidates with one suggesting a different hire. Again, the Homestead family will get behind him soon enough but he better know what he's doing and not just on training wheels for a few years. A young teacher who knows what they're doing & isn't on training wheels means what exactly? Many young teachers need to find their way, like anyone in any kind of career. No one 'gets it' right away. I don't think that people should be scared when it comes to marching band. I doubt that many people are truly scared about the situation, but perhaps I am unaware of one key factor. Does Homestead buy their music arrangement and drill design? Maybe that would help shed some light on exactly how problematic this could be for them? If they're already hiring out for everything, not sure why all of this would matter on day one. I wish Homestead well! Director changes, especially long time directors, typically hits programs hard. Then when replacements come and go quickly, even more so. Pretty much what happened to Lake Central. I thought Homestead finished strong last year. Hope all involved get on board and support the directors and students moving forward.

So this happened today. Piedmont (OK) selected their new head director a couple days ago and announced it today-
"Piedmont Public Schools announces the selection of Jeff Jahnke as the new head band director at Piedmont Public Schools. The appointment was approved at the board meeting held on June 12, 2023.
Mr. Jahnke brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having most recently served as the Director of Bands at Edmond Memorial High School. Under his leadership, the Wind Ensemble at Edmond Memorial achieved the prestigious distinction of being named an OkMEA Honor Band twice. Before his tenure at Edmond Memorial, Mr. Jahnke served as the Assistant Director at the University of Oklahoma and as the Director of Bands at Jenks, Putnam City North, Moore, and Lovejoy High Schools in Texas."
This is an exciting hire! I always enjoyed Jahnke's bands when I marched. He's a great hire for a program like Piedmont's who's getting ready to become one of the 6A big boys they've been known for trying to compete against.

I do worry about what’s going to happen to Mem, what with their last season and all. However, hopefully this opens the door to continued improvement of both programs. Jahnke is going to have Piedmonts Hornline playing GOOD, but I would not be shocked if they have a dramatic change in the flavor of their shows. Hopefully he’ll bring them back to BOA so that y’all out-of-towners can witness the energy those kids have. There was a 12 minute technical delay at a show last year, and the guard was standing there hyping up the crowd the WHOLE time. I have nothing but respect for both programs, and hope that Jahnke serves them well. He’s also, like, a Cool Guy, so the kids should like him.

The Head Director of Bands at Annandale HS in Virginia(they do USbands everyonce in a while, I'm only aware of this story cuz they are near me) Mr Tyron Barnes has resigned. He has allegedly resigned due to a "coordinated effort" by "connected Band boosters and middle school directors" to have him Fired due to his "strict, but not unkind" nature and the fact that he was a black man. In addition, he failed his most recent evaluation due to "limited professional knowledge in three main content areas: content expertise, instructional best practices, and instructional knowledge of policies and regulations.” This is despite him passing his previous evaluations with flying colors.
This evaluation came shortly after he publicly questioned Governor Glenn Youngkin at a town hall on if the governor believed there was racial bias present in schools and how he planned to address it. By all accounts, he is beloved by most students, fellow directors and parents, so yeah we have a mess to say the least.
Students organized a walkout following the announcement at the Band Banquet a couple weeks ago.

My HS alumn, Lovejoy from Lucas Tx had a major staff change this year, losing their head, percussion and guard directors. They just released the new instructors, and was wondering if anyone had any information on them. It seems like most of them have/ are still working with dci/wgi groups, so I hope that means something, but if anyone has any information on these people, and any past success, I’d be glad to know about it, thanks!
New head director: Christopher Adler New Perc director: Matt Joslin New guard director: Gloria Garcia
