Its a good idea to have this regional early since its high elevation, but i would love to see a late season in Phoenix too. That area seems to be on the rise since the state changed the competition rules to allow scoring and not just ratings so its great BOA is adding additional regionals there. With all the different organizations on the west coast there is quite a bit of different ways of doing things so BOA will have MBOS and WBA (and the state comps) to compete with too so it may not be so easy.

Didn't see Coweta last year, but based on their 2017 Atlanta finalist placement I'd say they're probably a finals lock unless there are way more good Arizona bands than I know about (which is true, but probably not enough to lock out Coweta).

Thinking of Arizona bands, Coronado HS from Scottsdale placed 17th at the 1986 Grand Nationals. I can not think of another AZ band that attended nationals, of course I do not know all the participants prior to 1985. Also, over the last 20 some years, Corona Del Sol HS was an occasional finalist at western regionals (there have been a few others whose names escape me) Otherwise, AZ as a state has not been too active in BOA; A little surprising given the states population. Perhaps that is going to change.

The southwest as a whole is good recruiting grounds for BOA - the St. George regional is proof of this (though I do get it's mostly the same entrants year after year). There's seemingly some interest, just BOA either didn't get the memo before or they had a lot of trouble finding a suitable date.
I do hope this is a catalyst for the region. It would be really exciting for another band not named American Fork to start competing at high levels.

I hope this regional and St. George don't cannibalize each other. However, there's enough time distance that while there may be many repeats, it won't cause a band to pick one over the other.

I kinda forgot about st george before. I think the gap in time between the two will lead to different groups going and the repeats will be changed enough to be enjoyable. I bet most of the shows in flagstaff wont be finished either. Hoping for more AZ groups than the usual too. Do the school districs there not pay for trips? I know El Paso district schools do not get trip funding (hence no El Paso coronado unless its UIL)

I have a hunch that we'll see a good chunk of AZ bands at this regional (and that they'll truly hold their own against any out of state bands that may venture in!). There will certainly be Desert Vista and Corona del Sol, two groups that have seen success at CA and UT regionals. Expect to also be surprised by groups like Mountain Ridge, Casa Grande, Williams Field, Millennium, Campo Verde, Mesquite, Mesa, etc.... I don't think most of these groups have attended a BOA regional before, but they've all grown to be quite excellent, especially in the past few years!
The biggest things currently holding AZ bands back are probably band sizes (they're generally smaller, with the biggest bands numbering 150-180) and production value. ABODA, the long-time official state circuit, has always rewarded (musical) excellence on an arbitrary scale, which has encouraged bands to perform blasé shows that are unmistakably straightforward. However, with the establishment of the more BOA/WBA-friendly AzMBA circuit several years ago, we've seen a growth in shows that also value visual designs and production value. If BOA maintains an Arizona regional over the next few years, I think we'll see a boom in bands whose shows favor the AzMBA/BOA circuits. We may even see some AZ bands venture out of state to other BOA competitions and represent our state on a national level. So thankful that BOA has finally returned to AZ!!

I didnt know the difference in how the circuits are judged thanks for that info. It does seem ripe for expansion there so i hope your right and it keeps getting better. When i was in high school it was a surprise to hear an Arizona name called at the other state's contests. If that changes the competitiveness (and hence level of performance) will go up.

Perhaps that is going to change. Can’t forget Desert Vista. They placed 4th at BOA St. George last year, and have placed finals occasionally in Southern CA. They’ve also beat out Corona for the past few years at in-state competition and state finals.
