Saw this post in the Favorite Show by Year thread and wanted to comment, but I didn't want to derail that thread. California DCI fan showing some 2021 Hebron, Avon and Carmel “Midwest” love. As someone who has a guilty pleasure of watching reaction videos (movies, songs, comedians, etc.), I wish there were more reaction videos for marching band. I would love to watch reaction videos from more knowledgeable sources because (as mentioned in other threads) I like to learn about things to understand them better, as well as other general reaction videos because I like to see how others react. I realize the biggest issue of why there aren't more reaction videos is because of copyright (both for music and for the video itself). I almost commented on the above youtube video that he's likely going to be receiving a strike or takedown notice from Box5 or BOA since he's using a broadcast Box5 video as the video he's reacting to. I found another youtuber that reacted to an early performance of Avon's Bloodline show, and he specifically commented that he was using a parent video and not a Box5 video because he'd been dinged by them previously. After the 2021 season ended, a youtuber started posting reactions to Grand National finalists' shows. 3 or 4 shoes into his reactions, his channel was completely shut down.

I've seen a couple of reaction videos, the issue stems from how they display the videos to begin with. While sure there is still the possibility of copyright hitting, band reaction channels don't even edit them by using any type of filters, they don't manipulate the audio, nor do they split the video itself in a way to stagger everything. From my understanding you can get away with about a max of 8-10 seconds before having to worry about if something gets flagged on YouTube... so showing the full reaction is fine, just put a bit of effort into editing the source video itself.

Copyright really just burns my bread with the activity. God I miss the days of final’s dvds. To actually own a physical copy of performances I was in. When WGI had their digital video vault? What good times to live.
All I know is props to whoever came up with “NOT x group at finals” titles in their YouTube videos.

Copyright is hard, but a true reaction video that actively transforms the original content (such as what Funliner did with Hebron) falls under fair use. That does not mean the automated system on YouTube won't ding it just because of how it works, but if things were easier and YouTube's user service was better, I'd expect reaction videos from people who know what they're talking about and have things to add would not have trouble getting the flags taken down. What I want is more EDUCATED reactions, maybe even chop out bits where there is silence. Basically anyone who tries to react to marching band and also knows nothing about marching band just sits there and says "oh wow, that's cool" every 30 seconds (every 5 seconds if you're a particular woman from New Zealand) and those videos deserve to be taken down. I don't even think you have to be involved in marching band to be able to add something to the conversation, someone with a background in dance or a classically trained musician (see Adam Tan's DCI and WGI reactions) could also have a lot to offer.

A reaction video of someone who has not followed in the activity in the last 20, 30, 40 years would be very interesting.

I think the most interesting react videos are from musical professionals (in any expertise) that are abroad in countries where marching arts seems like a fairy tale to them. You always get the purest reactions out of them & their musical opinions are truly unbiased
