I plan to attend Soaring Sounds, the Shoremen Brass Classic, and DCI Pittsburgh this week. Wanted to make it to Beats in the Brook yesterday (my nephews are Bellbrook graduates -- one just two months ago -- but I haven't actually been to the school since the early 1990s) but just couldn't fit it in. Would love to get to Drums in the Heartland, but we're opening a show that evening here.

Spartans have done quite a bit of touring this year, appearing with World Class corps much more than I had realized, although not for 18 days now (with one exception). I see they had been scoring 12-13 points behind Cadets and 5-6 points behind Spirit of Atlanta. Cadets' most recent score (Sunday night) is 89.65. Spirit of Atlanta's most recent score (Saturday night) is 79.85. Spartans' most recent score (Saturday night) is 81.55. Tonight we should learn whether Spartans really are challenging for a 13th-14th spot in Indianapolis or whether there's been a disconnect in scores since the Open Class corps were on their own (except for Jersey Surf) starting about two weeks ago.

Columbians 74.10 So in two days, Spartans dropped by 1.6 and Spirit went up by 2.8. I wonder if any judges now are wondering if they previously had been overscoring the one and underscoring the other.

Summer Music Games of Southwest Virginia Scores:1. Carolina Crown 93.75 2. Blue Stars 87.65 3. Troopers 87.404. Madison Scouts 82.00 5. Seattle Cascades 73.00 Last year, Troopers scored 87.425 placing 12th in Semifinals. As far as I can tell from scanning DCXMuseum.org and FromThePressbox.com, the highest score Troopers have ever earned in DCI competition* is 87.90 when they placed 9th in Semifinals in 1985. They seem very likely to surpass both of those scores this year. *Troopers did score in the 90s in some non-DCI competitions in the 1960s and early 1970s. And they did place 2nd in DCI Finals in 1973, but DCI's scoring system then yielded much lower numbers for all corps.

Drums Across the Smokies Scores:1. The Cavaliers 89.10 2. Colts 87.103. Crossmen 82.90 4. Pacific Crest 82.75 5. The Academy 80.30 6. Music City 79.65 Last year, Colts scored 87.45 while placing 11th in Semifinals. I believe that was their highest score ever. Like the Troopers, they appear to be on track to break their record this year. (Colts's best Finals placement was 9th in 1995 with a score of 86.30.)

Just got back from Centerville. My big takeaway was that too many DCI sound designers / sound engineers are really bad at their jobs, and we'd all be better off if they just stopped.

Just got back from Centerville. My big takeaway was that too many DCI sound designers / sound engineers are really bad at their jobs, and we'd all be better off if they just stopped. Or to put this in a less grouchy way: it may be that the designers and engineers are being asked to do the impossible. In live theater, actors might spend weeks working in a rehearsal hall before they go into technical rehearsals in the theater, where, as a stage manager once told me, it's a bit like starting over, as everything that was flowing so smoothly in the rehearsal hall now has to integrate all the lights, sounds, and other production elements. Three very long days are spent just getting an already fully-rehearsed two-hour production ready for its first public "preview" performance, and that's followed by another week of five-hour rehearsals during the day and performing at night until the show has its official opening and is considered to be a finished product. If the show then has to tour, at each venue, a lot of adjustments will be ncecessary. But drum corps have no opportunity to adjust for venues. And on top of that, I think corps directors are frequently asking the audio technicians to solve problems that speakers and microphones really aren't meant to address. Plus some of them probably have pretentious delusions of grandeur: the Corky St. Clair syndrome.

Stop running your entire show through mics and your sound system to clean tough passages by watering out 60% of the players and micing a select few and turning the the volume up to 11. Apparently I put it in a "run-on sentence" way as well.

I was low on the 35 yard line and it was pretty annoying. I didn't notice it as much with the better corps.

Some of that (Crusaders, Blue Devils) not relying on individual mics.
