I'll be at the Pittsbugh show tonight, wearing the Columbians t-shirt I bought last night (only they and Columbus Saints had a souvenir booth at Avon Lake, and I bought a Saints shirt in 2019). Here's hoping the storms pass through in time to justify the two-and-a-half-hour drive each way!
1. Blue Devils 96.125 2. Carolina Crown 95.725 3. The Cavaliers 91.050 4. Blue Knights 84.800 5. Spirit of Atlanta 83.850 6. Seattle Cascades 74.750
The weather held off. Some traffic/construction in Akron got us to Pittsburgh too late to see Cascades, but even seeing just five corps was worth it. That was tremendous! Spirit was a little too much navel-gazing. Blue Knights are a clear step down from Reading Buccaneers' 2014 take on the same material. Both may have been overscored a point or two. But Cavaliers had grown even from when I saw them just five days ago: now just tighten up the ballad section and clean up some of the fast drill. And while I would have had the top two reversed, they were quite close in one of the most satisfying sets I've ever seen. (I am surprised that BD was a clear third in percussion.) While BD should still be considered the odds-on favorite, I can't imagine them making any championship week change that could justify pulling a point or more ahead of Crown. This was my first viewing of both corps. I have studiously avoided the streams this year (except the west coast open class finals a few weeks ago), so I have yet to see Boston or Bluecoats. Tomorrow night, weather permitting.
Edited to add: The Blue Devils' warm-up location was too close to the stadium and they could be heard at times during both Cavaliers' and Crown's shows. Also, both Crown and BD had some microphone challenges for the French horn and trombone soloists, respectively. Finally, the stadium was close to full this evening.
For some reason, this wasn't on DCI's recap when you posted, but checking again now, it turns out that the Hawthorne Caballeros, in the all-age class, were also scored and not only performing in exhibition at this event. They got 83.250, outscoring the Buccaneers in Visual Effect, Color Guard, and Music Ensemble.
