Excited to see how things play out in Brownsburg today. Also hyped to see what Brownsburg themselves bring. Their uniform aesthetic reminds me of the blue and pink from Edge of Eternity....I'm very much here for it.

Bloomington South and Greenfield-Central were nice, pleasant surprises today in B. I can't quite tell BS has enough in the tank for this season, but they're 100% in play for state finals. GFC is putting on one of their better shows yet, some intriguing potential to win the state championship. We'll have to wait to see how the rest of the season shakes out for the top bands in B, but GFC has a good solid case.

Pleasant surprise from a band who has finished 2nd, 1st, 1st, 3rd the last 4 years. And should’ve been top 2 in 2017 and was 2nd in 2016. Completely out of left field that they would have a good show.

Enjoyed watching the Brownsburg livestream today! So many talented students.
Carmel was so good. Brownsburg was so good. I actually enjoyed Brownsburg more than Carmel, but I can't deny they absolutely insane musicality of that Carmel show.
I wasn't on the Brownsburg train as much last year, but I'm buying a ticket this year for sure. Early to say, but it feels like a GN finals group to me.

Small recap with thoughts from Edgewood on: Class C: 1. Edgewood- Another astutely difficult show that I think the rest of Class C will struggle to match. It's pretty clear to me Edgewood has the goods already to be state champions once again. Class B: 1. Greenfield-Central- If I had to pick recent favorites from when GFC's upper tier campaign (which I apparently seem to have collective amnesia of, instead of the plausible argument of where I did not agree with a few placements), this is easily already #1 in my book. Calling GFC the state champion favorite might be premature given the other top bands (Jasper/Northview/Greenwood/Ev. North) shake out is still a factor.... but I wouldn't be surprised with considering GFC the favorite already. 2. Pendleton Heights- The consistent improvement has been apparent in the program the last few years. The show design caught my eye also, much more expressive and unique than past shows. Hard to see this in the upper half this year, yet not a bad choice to lead the lower half of state finals. 3. Mt. Vernon (F'ville)- There's been quite a few setbacks after missing out on state, but Mt. Vernon still put on a competitive show today. Always glad to see the band compete in Open rather than Scholastic. This may not be a state show, but I can't see the show missing semi-state. 4. Bloomington South- I see you peeps, I've got my eyes on you all. After all of these years of being a show band, imagine my surprise when I found out it wasn't Bloomington North that performed. 8-13 at semi-state.... which means BS is a state contender. Class A:1. Carmel- This is one of the strongest starts Carmel's had in recent memory, harking back to 2018. There is a TON of material already on field alone, the most the band in a while.(I refuse to call it the Eagle show immediately like I did then, however) Ex. Brownsburg- Fellow mates know of my particular dislike for Symphonic Metamorphosis as a band piece (Spring has retired that piece for good), so that unfortunately colors my judgement of the show. In spite of that, however.... Brownsburg is solidly GN Finals band... visually. Easily the most expansive Brownsburg visual program put out yet, with so much details already this early in the season. Given the early start, the musicianship this early on is as much of a question mark as 2022 was, with whether the performance can be cleaned up to appropriate levels by GN's. Don't get me wrong though, this show can position themselves a pretty strong probably pick for GN Finals, on much more stable ground than 2022. 2. Center Grove- Out of the last few years, this is probably the strongest group of kids CG has put out, toughest music material yet, and a good solid performance. I'm quite excited to see where the band goes from here with this show. (Although there does need to be a bit more visually during the drum break because that was very lacking given how looong the break was) 3. Noblesville- Bounds and leaps better than 2022. The quality of performance and design thus far is quite catching for the average viewer. Noblesville has made a rather big step to be considered a state lock this year unquestionably. 4. Ben Davis- Certainly a different pace that I enjoyed. While eccentric, BD had quite a pleasing look overall to their show and performed their material quite well this early on. I do wonder if there is enough in the gas for the band to be able to get where they want to go, but this is group of kids look fairly hardy. It's in their hands to guide the show for this season imo. 5. Decatur Central- I prefer this year's compared to the last- there's a lot more where this show can add to make it shine quite well. With only the opener performed as is, I am somewhat a bit doubtful about how much DC can get completed before semi-state comes around, but that remains to be seen this season. 6. Hamilton Southeastern- I think this one could possibly surprise this year- I get early state contender vibes with this show. This performance, however, was not that. It's tough to tell whether the weather interfered with HSE or the music was just a bit out of their grasps this weekend. But all that aside, if HSE can put polish into their music, I think they could possibly be knocking on the door to state this year. 7. Perry Meridian- Still working through that growth. Unfortunately, it's a very tough class to compete in and there's enough on the field to comment that there is quite a bit of clash show design-wise that would keep them out of state contention. Semi-state should continue to be a goal for the band, and they'll get their sooner than later. Overall, my favorable impressions from this weekend (a mix of top bands, keep-your-eyes-on, and surprises): - Edgewood
- Greenfield-Central
- Bloomington South
- Carmel
- Brownsburg
- Center Grove
- Noblesville
- Hamilton Southeastern

I really liked Center Grove's bike helmets! I'm curious to see how they incorporate into their show.
Carmel did a great job. I felt, though, that there was a lot of standing and playing. That is, the band members either stood still and played, or they moved around the field, but very rarely did both playing and marching happen at the same time. So yeah, they sounded pretty good.

Also, Carmel was clearly the best group out there on Saturday at Brownsburg. But Saucedo should never be associated with a judging panel at a competition at which Carmel competes. It is a clear conflict of interest, or at least the appearance of a conflict of interest. (Looking at you, Grand Nats 2022)

(Looking at you, Grand Nats 2022) If you removed all judges that appear to have a conflict of interest there would be like 15 people who could judge GN and 4 of them post here.

Also! Edgewood looks fantastic as usual. Clear pick for Class C again. They are in my bands Class but I love them! Get to see them Saturday. Earlier than we are used to in the season. I had a Senior marcher last year that went on and Marches at her college now. This year I have a rookie 7th grade marcher. I was already telling her don't be upset or disappointed if Edgewood takes it all on Saturday. They are in a league of their own right now and are absolutely amazing! She said yeah I know I remember them from Sissy's time. If we can't win state I root for Edgewood to take it again!

I know I’m new but I was just wondering, Did anyone go to the banks of wabash competition? I’m curious how it went, and how some of the bands are looking. We went and saw most of the Open C and B bands, plus Homestead (lone A band) and Bluffton. Concordia Lutheran looked and sounded very good and won class C. East Noble was strong as well - we really liked their show. We enjoyed the visual effect created by Dekalb’s tops along with their music and drill - they did a really nice job. It looked like most of those bands put partial shows on the field. Homestead put their whole show on the field with props. It was easily their best first outing in several years - it looked and sounded amazing. They really got the crowd going. And they were super supportive of Bluffton during their performance - lots of cheering from the far end of the stadium during the exhibition.
