West Genesee in 5th they're tied with their lowest placement at States. It's crazy how in the 49 years I believe they didn't make top 3 only 4 times now, as well 33 State wins. While musically they have always played phenomenally, I think it is their visual package that slightly lacks. This has been the case for years since their last win in 2014. Once they figure that out to be on par with CNS, Pool, and arlington, they’re going to be a force again. My other concern is Victor. Since their win in 2015 when they scored I think 98, they haven’t cracked top 4 Agreed... WG has ALWAYS played well and is usually clean enough visually. But the four groups ahead of them just had designs with way more intention and depth to them. Even Baldwinsville—who I found way dirtier both musically and visually—just had a tremendously more interesting and well thought-out package. If and when WG can figure out their show design, they could easily dominate NY again. Victor... It felt like they hired a beginner drill writer this year. It was just so monotonous and ill-fitting for the music they performed. The visual caption used to make up for their weaker sound. I wonder what happened this year... hopefully next year's drill writer will understand how to orchestrate variety in their visual package. And my god, when a third of your band is in the guard (and when the guard is clearly capable of performing), USE THEM!!!

All in all, this was a GREAT year for NY. I don't know if this is true, but it seems like this is the largest number of bands we've ever had competing. And at the top of SS1 and National class, there were legit dogfights for not just first place, but for third place. Arguably the competitiveness ran even deeper than that! We saw three bands venture to BOA regionals, and all three made it to finals: - CNS: 6th place @ Toledo, 10/7
- Baldwinsville: 9th place @ Toledo, 10/7
- Victor: 12th place @ College Park, 10/21
We also saw great successes at USBands shows, including: - Liverpool: overall highest Open Class score at the Ludwig-Musser Classic, 10/7
- New Hartford: overall highest A Class score at the Ludwig-Musser Classic, 10/7
- West Genesee: tied with...
- ...Webster for second highest Open Class score at the Marine Corps Invitational, 10/14
Other groups also competed out of state but these are the highlights that stick out in my mind. (Please forgive me if I've forgotten a school that you're a fan of!)
TL;DR — this is probably THE BEST collection of NY bands we've had since the 1980s, if not ever. It's inspiring to see so many groups to challenge themselves to be better than ever. Not that "modern" shows are better, or that everyone's success involves modern show design! But the future seems bright for NY, and I'm hopeful that people outside of NY will start to take notice.

WG wise (and this is just my thought) but I think the formula they used for the last 40 something years just doesn’t work as well anymore. Marching arts, and its shows are now full of visual choreography, park n barks, bigger props, etc. times have changed and you see bands not only in NYS but across the country adapt to this new level of design. I put a lot of this change on the bluecoats from their 2016 show as it revolutionized what a “winning” show could be. Heck mineola for instance specifically writes their own music every single year to pair/fit WITH their overall design. Victor- I have no idea what’s going on with them but they were so so good in the mid 2010s when I was marching. They beat several top class BOA schools at tough regionals in Ohio and then now it seems like they plateaued?

The fact that this thread was started on a forum that includes states like texas, Indiana, oklahoma speaks volumes as to how NY is sort of surging back into prominence. CNS, WG, Webster and Arlington were outright dominant in the 70s-80s. But then powerhouse states caught up and passed. It’s hard to venture into other circuits and do well nowadays but I wish more NYS schools went to bigger circuits in off weeks. Roslyn just went back to back for group V A at the USBANDS NY championships… I’d love to see other schools take the chance and compete in BOA. I remember even seeing mineolas performance and thought that this years show could’ve made noise if they ever went. The only problem is budgets for these trips out of state because it’s so expensive

During the Toledo Regional: East Syracuse Minoa placed 2nd place in Group IV A, and 2nd overall in A Class behind Pennsbury, PA (IV A) at the Marple Newtown Bandorama Lindenhurst making finals at the USBands Mid-Atlantic Regional (10th/10th) as well winning III - A States, Rosyln V - A, Tottenville IV - A, Garden City III - A, North Rockland II - A, Monsignor Farrell I Open, and Oceanside I - A. I can't wait for Corning-Painted Post and many of the NY bands coming to USBands Finals/Nationals.

And it really wouldn't be too long of a trip if BOA would schedule Piscataway any weekend other than NYSFBC, whether they are willing to or want to is a whole nother question

They have the talent to do it, much of the staff comes from a ton of drum corps (crown, scouts, colts, Boston, phantom to name a few). As we all know, band is getting expensive. Luckily NYS it doesn’t cost as much compared to Midwest where their budgets are in the high 6 figures every year to run a show. Though in our conference I believe some schools have some decent money as they’re able to afford new uniforms every year ( I.e Bville and roslyn) which I think is great!
