Can you hear the woodwinds? Do they play anything at a volume less than forte? Asking for several thousand friends. As for what it has to do with who takes the Eagle: - If a Texas band wins, we "know" that Vandegrift is better.
- If a non-Texas band wins but by very little over the Texas bands, we have evidence that Vandegrift is better.
- If a non-Texas band dominates the field of Texas representatives, we can only make passing comparison of Vandegrift and that band.
If there are multiple bands in the conversation for any given year, none of those bands stand out as belonging in the realm of GOAT. There are a few of your comments that I question:: * absolutizing one circuit (who placed what or where) is a logical fallacy that appeals to Authority. Their are other circuits and adjudication philosophies to consider. *playing softer absolutely doesn’t mean better. It’s like saying because you can play fortissimo wonderfully full gives one preeminence. Marching band is not a concert hall. Woodwinds usually have to use more air to fill their outdoor space which makes them a bit louder in effect. *What does it matter if a Texas band wins at Nats. It’s not like Nat’s represent the Top 12 finalist in the country year over year? Maybe I’m missing something? Really not trying to be argumentative and I saw these particular rebuttals coming a mile away as it’s probably the consensus on this forum. Maybe I’ll bring up the Vandy GOAT argument after Nats again 🤷♂️ *any response please no copying and pasting select lines to beat up. Let’s keep the whole of the thread going as various positions and points(pro and con) were made as a whole. Thanks You question my comments? "Absolutizing" one circuit is something YOU brought up. I noted that Vandegrift won in two separate competitions in two different circuits as support for why they may well be the top dogs this year. I asked if Vandegrift has the ability to play softer. I didn't say that was "better," but I do believe (as in this is MY opinion) that this a skill lacking in many Texas marching band performances. Read my three list points with unbiased eyes and you might have a chance to understand why it MIGHT matter to the discussion of Vandegrift POTENTIALLY being one of the greatest of all time. Keep in mind, I stated that at this time I consider Vandegrift to be the top group this year and that there is a very good chance that will continue to be my opinion after this week's performances. I also believe Hebron was stronger in 2022 than Vandegrift is this year, as well as more dominant vs. the field for that particular year (i.e. more appropriate for GOAT consideration).

Five of the six visual judges at San Antonio thought someone else was better than Vandegrift AT THAT COMPETITION. None of the Panel 1 visual judges in Prelims had Vandegrift first, and only Adam Sage did in Finals.
Vandegrift took the music caption in Finals by only 0.125.
Vandy was obviously the most complete band at San Antonio, but it's not like they wiped the floor with all other competition.

(If we're talking about GOATs, 1988 Marian Catholic won Grand Nationals by a margin of 5.60 points, a record that will never come close to being broken.)

Maybe it’s worthy of dialogue and maybe it’s not? Time will tell 🤷♂️

Absolutely pathetic judging to have L. D. Bell in the top half. Being in finals is even questionable with Westwood, Timber Creek, and Cedar Ridge being left out. Bell was fine, but there is nothing special about them and even the bands that performed around them were just as good. I guess their name somehow got them extra points? I watched the entire prelims and would not have had them in. As someone that is currently a senior at LD Bell and just finished my final marching season, this is pretty rude lol. Wish I could say it hurt my feelings though, but Bell has faced a lot of backlash thanks to our reputation, so we’re all pretty used to the hate, as sad as that is to say. We all worked very hard to crawl our way into the top half and it’s a real shame that you, who was not out there busting your butt like every single kid from every single band did, think that you have the right to make the call on who gets to go to finals.

Don’t worry about them. Bell was absolutely phenomenal on Saturday and deserved that top half placement! Kudos to the amazing LD Bell Marching Band!

We’ve all had kind of a weird sense of imposter syndrome over this due to how unsuccessful we were over the past few years leading up to this (in comparison at least, I’m still very proud of those years). This is a feeling that seems to be shared by all the Rouse kids, at least the ones I spoke to at full retreat. We’re very happy to be here!
