Sorry I didn't even realize some of these bands weren't going!!! I totally forgot to look at the list of bands that are attending lol Speaking of which, Westlake TX (At least as far as we know) isn't coming, unless you are talking about Westlake UT, but they are not at all a common Finals bubble pick... clarinet only put Westlake. I think they know it's Westlake, UT and just hope Westlake make finals as clarinet didn't even put them in the top 12 finalist meaning not fitting in the "common final bubble." So, they agree with you.

Honestly a year in which both Westlakes attend would be interesting Now imagine they also both make finals one year lol Two Homesteads were in semifinals in 2015, IN and CA. Theoretically either one (or both) could have made finals, which made for an awkward finalists announcement. Chuck ultimately announced the city of origin before the school name when he announce Homestead (IN) as a finalist. ("Coming to us from the city of Ft Wayne...") Homestead (CA) finished in the 17-19 range, though I'm too lazy to check.

Confirmed: Springboro H.S., OH - (Bands of America Grand National - Indianapolis) Source: SHS Band Schedule docI didn't really care for the content of Springboro's show last year, but in terms of execution I was really impressed. I'd love for them to try something like their 2015 show again, but cleaner and with a bit more visual imagination -- although the drill in their closer, Nat McIntosh's "Brooklyn," was really nice, including a cool rippling file move.

What’s the high? Was it 108 in 2018? You are correct. The only other years with triple digit participation to date were 2016 and 2017 with 100 each.

I would absolutely love for you to take a few of the most successful programs in the state and do a write-up about your favorite shows and moments for each. I'm sure it would be an interesting read.

What’s the high? Was it 108 in 2018? You are correct. The only other years with triple digit participation to date were 2016 and 2017 with 100 each. A lesson in perspective for me! Because I only first saw Grand Nationals (and only Finals) in 2014 and only started to really get acquainted with BOA in the following years, I had assumed that the 100+ counts in 2016-2018 were the norm and the lower counts since then were an aberration. I didn't really care for the content of Springboro's show last year, but in terms of execution I was really impressed. I'd love for them to try something like their 2015 show again, but cleaner and with a bit more visual imagination -- although the drill in their closer, Nat McIntosh's "Brooklyn," was really nice, including a cool rippling file move. I would absolutely love for you to take a few of the most successful programs in the state and do a write-up about your favorite shows and moments for each. I'm sure it would be an interesting read. All in good time, I hope. Also while it's true, as hewhowaits and neop have mentioned, that I do take notes whenever I go to a band competition, I haven't actually looked at my notebook from 2015 for a long time, I'm not sure I could read my own handwriting, and I doubt that there's much in what I noted that would be of much use in accurately assessing the bands. The act of taking notes probably helps me focus more than anything I actually write down. And my ability to remember a given show is often a function of the (perceived) quality of that show. It can also help if I saw a show more than once: I saw Springboro three times in 2015 (at Akron and Revere -- in both events, they placed behind the band in which neop played, Amherst Steele -- and state finals), and I liked what Springboro was attempting so much I even sent a complimentary email to the band's director. Plus I'd never heard "Brooklyn" before, and it stood out. By contrast, I only once saw the 2015 performance by Colerain, the other Ohio band that was just added to this year's Grand Nationals list, but all I remember from viewing that show (only at state finals) is that it featured some picture-frame props and that I was surprised to find that it wasn't as good as I hoped, given that I knew they'd enjoyed some competitive success that season. (There were some topsy-turvy results in 2015, which are too convoluted to detail in this post.)

Drop: Avon Lake H.S., OH (confirming that they are attending as spectators and not performing) Does anyone know if there's any past practice at all of a band driving nearly five hours to only watch Grand Nationals? Any idea how many days they'll actually be attending? Speaking as someone who sat through all of Grand Nationals last year and would do it again, I recognize that it's a lot for the ordinary viewer, and most band kids fall into that category. (There'll be a small subset of hardcore devotees.) It might be a fun exercise for the band to watch a block or two of Prelims and have them try to rank the bands in that groups -- with a prize for the person who gets closest to the judges' results? -- but after that, I think their attention would falter.

They would of course get chances to watch when not on a shift
