Attending: Edwardsville H.S., IL (calendar) Kind of surprised by this one - I thought they'd try to continue their success at ISU. Just opens up another 5A-6A spot for finals.

Possible: Moon Area H.S., PA (calendar) Never say never, but I’m betting it’s more likely that they’ll be at one of the regular regionals.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Beavercreek place in the top 25 again (if they're attending since the calendar still only goes to Aug 5 2024)

I wonder how many Oklahoma bands will make finals this year Of the 3 currently announced, Owasso is a safe bet to make finals. Depending on who else attends, they could be in contention for the top half of finals. Choctaw will have a good chance at defending their AA title, but it'll be a tougher field this year with Brandon Valley & Norwin (should they attend). Bixby has a shot but the AAA field could be tougher than last year with Homestead likely attending this time around. If Blue Springs attends as they've done in their non-Grand Nationals seasons, they'll most likely sweep through AAA.

I know GN semi-finals is continuing to get stronger & tighter to slide into, but I feel like Owasso would have 2 runs if they decided to go. I'm sure they want 'finals' on their resume which is why they chose this, I get it, just thinking about how it would be nice for them to join Jenks & BA at the big one

Oh I'm aware of those appearances. Just thinking of the trip itself & how they chose the SR over GN since it would be just about the same budget. Oops... I didn't realize what I said could be taken 2 ways lol. I meant this SRs finals for this coming year instead of just being a semi-finalist at GN

I know we're veering off topic, but Owasso has always been such an interesting case study to me. I know this is grossly oversimplifying things, but I've always simply thought of them as a band that plays really, REALLY well, who occasionally strikes gold by pairing that terrific culture of musicality with a great show, or a streak of a few years of good designs. Those years where they strike gold, they are a clear GN Finalist-level group. Their 2004 Reverberate show that landed them the bronze medal at San Antonio, their 2011 scarecrow that very deservedly was knocking on the top half of GN Finals, their 2015 Kill Bill show that scored so well at a stacked San Antonio. When they hit it, boy do they hit it! Most seasons, though, seem to offer up designs & performance qualities that would land them squarely in GN Semis, sometimes pushing into Finalist bubble territory, but always lacking that extra sparkle that they seem to find on the rare banner year that rockets them far past their normal expectations. They've weathered director changes & designer changes without ever really dipping in quality much, which tells me that this is just sort of who Owasso is - a great band who isn't hyper-focused on playing nationally with the big boys, but every once in awhile gets a chance to, and seems to be content either way. Jenks has also been giving off similar vibes as of the last few years, whereas Union during the late '00s-'10s seemed much more nationally-focused, more similar to BA. I don't mind either way, each band pursues the path that is right for them; I've just always found Owasso to be interesting!

I LOVED the Nintendo/ Mario show from 2013. Very creative and great playing band Yes!!!! I believe that was the year they won St Louis, yes? I always remember Owasso as having one solid stream of shows, 2011-2013. I never remember the order, other than the scarecrow show in 2011, and then I know the two that followed up were the player two show and the one that used music from the xx. All three were terrific and that streak was the only time I thought, ok, Owasso is turning into a national powerhouse. Then they came to GN in 2014 with that lackluster, banal Robert Frost Two Roads show that missed Finals and I thought, never mind, same Owasso after all. 2015 Kill Bill was of course incredible, but I haven't seen them come anywhere close to recreating that 3-year streak of excellent shows since.
