For whomever is interested, fresh off the presses:
A proposal has been raised that is under legitimate consideration and likelihood that starting either this fall or the fall of 2025 (details are being finalized), a new classification system will be put in place that will create a "6A" class. This will include the 20 largest schools by enrollment in the state. Although it shouldn't really shake up the usual 5A programs that have been classed as such in the last 3-5 years (the ones that will get bumped up to 6A), there will probably be a noticeable shake up in classifications 1A-5A.
Also on a side note, Director Moss confirmed today that A.J. Pace (formerly of T.L. Hannah) has now joined the Byrnes staff as an assistant director with a focus on percussion. The TL Hannah program has made tremendous strides in the last few years, most recently beating Catawba Ridge and Nation Ford for the SC 4A title. Percussion has been a weak link in JFB's program for a few years now, and I anticipate this addition to reap immediate benefits.

RIP TL Hanna I wonder though, if JFB is going to utilize him for show design. With their current money situation they might be looking to save on that aspect and since AJ has a great knack for it, well…could be a very strategic hire on more levels than just percussion.

Adding onto the original post (from what I've heard from an upstate band director), ALL classifications will do away with lower/upper states and move to a same day prelims/finals format. 1A and 2A will be Oct 19th, 4A and 5A on Oct 26th then 3A and 6A on Nov 2nd (HOPEFULLY this means each state competition will be at good locations).
Classifications: 6A - top 20 5A - next 24 4A - next 28 3A - next 28 2A - next 32 1A - everyone else (about 50 schools although about half don't have marching bands)
compared to last year's classes being top 24, next 39, next 39, next 39 and then the rest, there isn't a lot of change for most programs.
I can't say I'm a big fan of the change, but not opposed to it, just not sure why it's needed. Hopefully it'll allow more competitions later in the season (Olde English/Rock Hill is set for Oct 19th) and this extends the band season.

The most significant change will be splitting the current 4A heavyweights. Catawba Ridge stays in 4A, while Nation Ford and TL Hanna move to 5A. Also love how this frees up schedules for bands who have been previously been locked into two weeks of upper/lower state and state.

Agreed, more notable changes: Liberty down 1A (with Blacksburg, Ninety Six and Batesburg-Leesville), Travelers Rest and Greer up 4A (with York and Catawba), Fort Mill stays in 5A (with TLH, Easley and NaFo). I was so happy to see RH/Olde English set their comp date to the 19th already, hopefully others (Byrnes, Irmo, Blythewood, Silver Bluff) follow suit and likewise have later season competitions

That has been nixed for this year as the stadium is being redone. All Byrnes home games will be held at another school (Broome most likely). It’s another blow to the JFB pocketbook since that is their biggest money raiser by a long shot.

Yeah it’s a bummer. We were really excited for our daughter as she just moved up to competition band last year and the momentum from Scarlett Confidential was supposed to be the launching pad for the next level. But the director change and fund raising hits started and they seem to just keep coming. I’m sure they’ll do whatever they need to do to keep JFB competitive but they’re definitely swimming against the current right now.

For anyone interested, I took the SC dept of Education 45 day head count that they've used in previous years for the new classifications. I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate as there are a few new schools and some that seem to of jumped from 1a to higher classes, but should be fairly close. onedrive.live.com/view.aspx?resid=59C7D91FC044A874%214371&authkey=!AEzzFDSHlE4235E

Looking at the numbers of the 2023-2024 45 day enrollment, i’m not absolutely convinced Fort Mill would drop out of the 6A classification. They certainly would struggle against Nation Ford if they are in 5A vs. 6A. Either way Fort Mill would be on the edge numbers wise of the two classifications.
One interesting note is that Wando’s numbers are down to 2500, I think even two years ago they were still close to 3000 during the split with Beckham. It does explain their smaller numbers in the marching band (although 2500 students is still a very decent size for a school).

Somewhat off topic. Something I've always wondered but never found an answer to:
What caused the SCBDA to use their own classifications starting in 2006?

Looks like this new classification system will be happening. Just looking at the 45 day enrollment from this year quickly it does seem that Fort Mill will fall out of 6A - they’re def somewhere in the 20s population wise, lots of Charleston area schools grew and a few have shrunk.
CR is only at 1600 something so they would probably stay in 4A. Curious about Daniel. Nation Ford / TL Hanna probably in 5A.

CR is 4A, Daniel stays in 3A, NaFa and TLH both 5A.

Catawba Ridge is going to have a field day in 4A. Yeah… it’s going to be a blowout. I haven’t seen a class this lopsided since 2010/11 when Nation Ford and Fort Mill were in 3A. I know by enrollment that’s how the cookie crumbled, but they should have been in 4A.

Circling back to the second part of the original post...
After listening to Mr. Moss last night at the booster meeting, he confirmed that A.J. Pace is in fact, also on the design team (still includes Jim Moore/John Vanderkloff and company). He will be handling mostly electronic design.
I also found out that the director of percussion at Mauldin (who's percussion has become top tier in the last couple of years) is joining A.J. at Byrnes. Moss is building a beast at JFB that will be apparent in the next few years.
Also - the 6A state championship will either be held at Colleton County (again) or Spartanburg High School (fingers crossed).
