I'm dying to know why everyone in MCM has had a stank face for all of retreat. It's like they were all scolded before walking out....

MCM is generally pretty serious at retreat, similar to how the Cadets would handle it. But the extra stank face? Infinity was put on probation by WGI for a reason. MCM doesn’t forget.

I’m guessing around a 5 point drop by Center Grove they had a mishap?

They had a fairly long delay when a computer didn't work and they had to pull out a backup during setup.

So, just continuing to reflect on IW, and as the days pass the more certain I become that the only show from 2024 I'll remember in the long term is Mystique.
I mean, to do a show whose basic premise was, "Artists must push the boundaries of their medium and genre, even if they pay the price for it in the short term," only to then be beaten by 4 groups doing pretty much exactly what they've done every year for the last half decade... I mean, it makes the point even more clearly. The irony is thick.
And then, that final moment with the narration about opening doors that others may follow? From the group that essentially invented indoor percussion as we know it? They basically said, "Hey, are y'all enjoying this thing called indoor percussion? Yeah... you're welcome."
A perfect mic drop.

Was thinking, I know Ayala hasn't performed yet, that if Avon somehow takes this title, they'd be the 1st school to win the big 4 in a single year... GN, SW Winter Guard, SW Percussion, & SW Winds Also Brownsburg doing very well for a fresh promotion! How does an ensemble get promoted into a different class?

I'm sure someone could answer this much better than me, but if I'm not mistaken whichever group being considered for promotion/reclassification is brought up either by WGI themselves or the instructors of the group to a panel within WGI that holds a vote. Not sure how many people vote or how many votes are needed to pass though. A promotion/demotion can be considered for a number of reasons, but the gist of it is based on if a group is performing above or below the skill of the class they're currently in. Also, if percussion is like guard, top 3 (medalists) in A & Open are promoted for the following year.

I'm dying to know why everyone in MCM has had a stank face for all of retreat. It's like they were all scolded before walking out.... From what my son tells me....that is how MCM acts from the moment they arrive on site. He told us that if he had went to MCM that he would not be allowed to talk to us if we showed up at a contest until after it was over. MCM is in "show mode" the moment they arrive and will not interact with anyone. Its just their thing.

A perfect mic drop. Well said! To be candid, I was dumbfounded by how... "meh" almost every PIW finalist show was, with the exceptions of MCM and Infinity. (I also applaud GMU for their creativity; I'm thankful their designers share a unique POV every year.) I could not believe how absolutely forgettable almost every show concept was. As always, this is not a critique of the performers—if anything, what justified these groups as finalists was the performance quality of the members themselves. And to that end, it feels like the judges ONLY rewarded ensembles based on their energy/cleanliness. Despite having the most world class design of the night, I assume MCM finished in fifth because they were slightly dirtier than the ensembles ahead of them. As a whole, I was vastly more impressed with the creativity on display in PSW. Dartmouth, Avon, Ayala, Burleson Centennial, Arcadia to name a few—thank you for your risk-taking and putting on such unique, memorable shows!

According to the rulebook, there is no automatic/mandatory promtion in percussion like there is in guard.

I generally agree that most of IW was a bit blasé this year, not bad exactly, but perhaps... phoned in? Uninspired? Stuck in a rut? I feel like we have hit one of those moments where a successful formula has been discovered and spread to all of the competitors. Now we need someone to find a new, exciting formula and break through a mold that has become stale. I don't know what that looks like, exactly, but I might humbly suggest that we declare a moratorium on "Angsty, vaguely grunge rock, prerecorded singer provides the melodic content." And I also agree: George Mason was a lot of fun.
