Although slightly unrelated I've heard from a few members of Beavercreek that their brass section is doing double tonguing exercises Idk why this is so funny but I burst out laughing

Curious about your thought process and/or what you may have heard here. Why would one of them need to go, given that geographically they are quite far apart? And, if one does go, would Memphis be your bet? It's just a matter of saturation at this point. I don't think Memphis will go based on the market it offers. The implication I meant was directed towards Chattanooga. I want to emphasize everywhere BOA has gone, the site has wanted BOA there- there has been tons of collaborations, cross-training, exposure, etc. that the site has offered. UofChat was no different, however stadium has proved itself ultimately a bit too unwieldly to host and I do not see the regional growing beyond the core base of bands already present, even with moving the date later on. Another regional within reasonable distance of the GA borders would see a fairly similar turnout still. No lie, though, it is an AWESOME site. The stadium is perfect for performing in and in the heart of Chattanooga, right at the foot of the Appalachians? Heck yeah. I would love to see it back, but the BOA schedule desires and demands does not favor Chattanooga at this moment, I feel. Early season regionals in the southeast are hit or miss. I think when Powder Springs happened the 1st week of October that was more successful overall. Anything before that and most bands don't want to venture that far with an incomplete show. GA, SC, and NC are pretty rough and bare bones till that 1st week of October anyway.

Maybe it’s just too hot (although we didn’t have the choice lol). Regionals in the SE would do way better in mid to late October.

Regionals in the SE would do way better in mid to late October. In NC it is state law that public schools cannot start until the Monday closest to August 26th. There is some contention over this and some districts choose to defy this law and start earlier, but most follow it. Because of the mandated later start most bands don't begin their band camp until a week or two into August. I don't think there are ever any local competitions in the state before the last Saturday of September with a lot of preview shows happening the week before and a lot of bands have incomplete shows for the first couple weeks of competitions. So yes, I agree. At least from the perspective of NC bands early regionals just won't work. Edit: Though a lot of the more prominent bands in the state that do BOA shows do start their rehearsals earlier regardless of when school starts for them.

I don’t know if other states do this, but SC has a mandatory start date no earlier than the 3rd Monday of August. Mark Stanford (the Governor who had an affair in 2009 with his Argentinian mistress) I think enacted this rule a few years before that.
I can’t remember exactly why, but I think it was so kids could keep working at the coastal cities,( Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Hilton Head), because all the northerners vacationing didn’t start their school year until after Labor Day and we’re still spending money and vacationing there - so basically cheap labor driven.
I remember going there before that the law was enacted on vacation and school would start like the first week of August

Like in SC the law regarding school start dates was passed because of lobbying from the beach vacation industry against the wishes of those in education. A few years ago my district decided to become one of the districts to ignore the law and we start earlier. It gets the first semester over with before Winter break and the bands get the advantage of having more practice time before competitions start.

Some of us remember school ALWAYS starting after Labor Day AND ending before Memorial Day. No extended breaks other than 9 or 10 days at Christmas/New Year. Before Memorial Day is wild to me. Most MA schools start the week of Labor Day and go until at least mid-June, sometimes late June if they have to make up snow days. I remember one year going until ~June 28. Do other states only do one week off in the January-June timeframe, like a typical March spring break? Most MA schools have one winter break week in February and one spring break week in April, which contributes to the mid-June ending date.

I'm not sure about laws or reasons why, but Florida varies from county to county for start and end dates. Here in Orlando this current school year ends the Friday before Memorial Day (most years it's the week before here) while other counties end a week or 2 later. I know it's still 2 weeks (10 days) of winter break and a week of spring break and instead of snow days, we have hurricane days if needed to make up for which I'm sure that's similar in the Carolinas.

I remember going there before that the law was enacted on vacation and school would start like the first week of August Camdenton starts late and ends early for the same reason. The school would hardly exist if not for the healthy chunk of tourism money it receives every year. Missouri’s working age starts at 14 and something like 90% of the area’s seasonal employees are high school and college students (if not a higher percentage).

Indiana has no laws governing the start of school year, so it’s up to each district to set their calendar . Avon, Brownsburg and several other Indianapolis area schools do a ‘balanced calendar’ - school starts late July/early August, two weeks of for fall break, two weeks off for Christmas, two weeks spring break, the school ends right around Memorial Day. Band kids don’t get the full two weeks in the fall - they get part of it off then have a sort of mini band camp the rest of the time.

I don't know of any states that have limited time off during the school year any more. My memories of post-Labor Day to pre-Memorial Day are from the dark ages when the first non-weekend day off was Columbus Day, followed by election day in even-numbered years, then Thanksgiving Day (NEVER the day before). There were no "fall breaks." Christmas break started on the December 23 (or the Saturday immediately preceding it if it was Sunday or Monday) and ended with school on the first non-Monday weekday following the first weekend after Christmas (it could be as early as Tuesday, December 29 when Christmas was on a Friday). Yes, we sometimes went to school during the week between Christmas and New Years Day. We got Lincoln's Birthday and Washington's Birthday (Presidents Day didn't exist yet) off then a week for spring break (ALWAYS the week leading up to Easter, no matter when that was). That's it. That's it. No teacher in-service days, no four-day weekends at every Federal holiday, extremely rare cancellations for weather (I recall three in my 13 years in public school and ironically two of those were for snow in Southern Nevada of all places).

I will say that my recollection is exactly the same as yours. I don't recall which specific federal holidays were observed (I'm sure it changed during my school years of '66-'79) but yeah, essentially post Labor Day to Memorial Day, the week between Christmas and New Years, and Spring Break. Starting school in July and ending well into June is wild to me. I imagine a year around schedule with more mini breaks will eventually be adopted.

Unfortunately, as someone who despises cold and snow, the upstate can get popped by winter storms. SC is an ongoing climate experiment.

The typically split into three groups rotating through the schedule, which reduces the number of schools needed. Works okay for early years (as long as your kids are on the same schedule) but not once the students get to the age of school sports participation.

There are many flavors of year round school or alternative schedule school. As posted above, 9 weeks on/2 weeks off is the most common in Indiana right now.
There have been efforts recently to enact a law to start after Labor Day and end before Memorial Day in Indiana, but with the 180 school day calendar it is very difficult to fit in that window.

I would at once be and not be surprised if there were 10 Texas regionals next year. We had nine just this past… actually, nine and a half if you include Las Cruces (practically an El Paso regional).
The question would be as to where…
