Really enjoyed Fossil Ridge. I have them in the lead so far, just over Davis. Wish this band would come to GN some year. Not enough CO representation in BOA.

Green Canyon H.S., UT - Utah must really love their capes! Also maybe the loudest group of the prelims bottom half, they really hook you at the beginning both musically and visually. GC is really impressing me, they have an incredible dynamic range for a group of their size. I love the color of the more "exotic" auxiliary percussion as it adds a very unique color I wish we heard on the field more. The ballad with it's Africa quotes has me laughing, but in a good way. This show is an absolute GE monster and is very enjoyable the entire way through, never get bored. Also the drum break mixing the "exotic" percussion and battery is very clean and probably the strongest percussion of the night so far. What a show! Definitely will be watching this band in future seasons!
And now for my half-time rankings:
5) Farmington H.S., UT 4) Desert Vista H.S., AZ 3) Davis H.S., UT 2) Fossil Ridge H.S., CO 1) Green Canyon H.S., UT

As much as I like to think I know about marching band on a national level, I occasionally find myself surprised. Green Canyon is one of my biggest surprises of the year. I haven't heard of them before beyond maybe seeing their name on a recap sheet, and I was pleasantly surprised with their show. Great work from a band of roughly 60 winds, and a really fun show.

Clovis H.S., NM - If there's only one thing that I love about Clovis (which there's not, a lot that I love), it's their purple uniforms. Deep purple just pops on the green field like nothing else and it's one of my favorite things to see. Clovis's show is a big step up in difficulty, but also execution. After hearing Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini performed live the other night, it's a delight to hear it again tonight except on a field instead of a concert hall stage. I know I already talked about colors, but the props and flags pop so much and I can't help but mention it again. Gonna Fly Now following Savannah River Holiday is such a fun closer, especially with that jazz running section while those kids are still playing their butts off. Incredible performance once again from this consistently strong program, really excited to see them continuing growing in BOA!

Call me crazy, but is it unreasonable to think that on a year like this, a band like Clovis could make a case for GN finals had they decided to attend? They were phenomenal.

Wondering if Clovis could win after that performance. It will be close i think. The really need to go to GN.

Fort Mill H.S., SC - Listening to their ensemble sound alone, you can tell this group is from the opposite side of the country as all the other bands. Much more of a concert band timbre compared to the drum corps timbre that most west coast bands seem to strive for. Love the blending between the woodwind section and backfield brass in the ballad, the transition felt so seamless. The low and high brass exchange in Mars is something new for me personally, never seen it treated as such. Trombones sound great on their feature, then the crunch hits finishing off the movement is very exciting. The solfege singing is a neat touch, but is giving me flashbacks to aural skills. Very good showing from Fort Mill! I can't imagine how exhausted they are following that 32 hour drive.

I thought they flew (although that would still mean some poor parents are making that drive with the props and instruments). I really enjoy their show this year, and think folks predicting their demise is a bit premature. That said, I think they performed stronger in prelims and could lose out on a top 5 spot tonight.

San Marcos H.S., CA - SM is giving us the best of California! A strong color guard, a massive sound and group of winds, and a special emphasis on percussion. The pacing of this show makes sure that you're engaged the entire time, so much happening in the drill and how it ties into what's happing in the music works great. Their percussion feature was incredible and the incredible drill design continues throughout the closer. A great showing from California at this competition, I hope they continue to be regulars here!

It took me entirely too long to understand what the announcer was saying for Foothill's show title. Both prelims and finals it sounded like she was saying "Ball is stick" rather deliberately, as opposed to ballistic with emphasis on the "ball."

Foothill H.S., NV - Good gosh, that's some volume those kids are putting out! The balls being thrown out to the ensemble from the circle prop is quite funny to watch and it gives the front ensemble some good exposed moments. The ballad peak is very strong across the board with contribution throughout the entire ensemble. And Tempered Steel as the closer? HECK YES! I've loved this piece since I heard my middle school band performe it at my old middle school director's final concert as a band director. Great to finally hear it performed on the field. I definitely think Foothill will be finishing the night with yet another medal, I think this group has been making incredible strides the past few years that have been going mostly undiscussed.

Does American Fork look a bit smaller than recent years? They're a bit shy of 200 this year by my count.

American Fork H.S., UT - AF immediately shows us as to why they are the favorite to win this regional as they almost always do. An unmatched control of sound throughout all of the ensemble and each section is showing their strengths. The color guard immediately caught my eye and I'm not one to pay much attention to the guard (which I am trying to change). Framing the soloists in other band members is such a creative thing to showcase them when a lot of other bands would just use stages. I can't mention the guard enough, throughout all the strong hits they make their presence known like no other guard I've seen tonight. I definitely see American Fork easily walking away with the title tonight.

I’m almost positive they flew I could've sworn I read somewhere in this thread earlier that they drove, but I could be wrong. They 100% flew. As they were in Las Vegas last night. They used Music Travel Consultants

Fort Mill coming in with a 3rd place music perf in finals. Top 5 at this regional was a big accomplishment for them. They have really been through a lot these past two years with not only a director change but also a school split! Way to pull through adversity Fort Mill and stay strong. Tomorrow they are going to the Grand Canyon I believe.
I loved American Fork. They really redid their uniforms perfectly and that guard was super powerful. They totally deserve that 89. Clovis sounded awesome too. They are really almost to that high echelon level of performance that makes me really want them to go to GN soon!

Interesting to see the brand new school, Cedar Valley do relatively well at UMEA last week. They might be one to watch for in coming years. Bro sees the future Not me posting on a 4 years dead thread 😂
