Drop: Greendale H.S., WI — opting for a local Illinois competition. Downers Grove or Providence? (Or both?) Downers Grove, from what I’ve been told.

Either there are 15 other Iowa and Missouri bands signed up for this regional that we don’t know about, or this regional seems to be in trouble.

BLESS. Catastrophizing over. I'm glad that this event is still on, but it doesn't help attendance when this regional is scheduled the same day as Minnesota's State Marching Band Championships. It's also the same day as Iowa's largest marching band competition: Valleyfest at West Des Moines Valley H.S. Independence usually attends Valleyfest, so it will be interesting to see which show they choose. As far as I've been able to uncover, no Minnesota or Wisconsin bands will be attending. So I don't know who all will be going to this show. NOT ATTENDING: Brandon Valley H.S., SD (Youth in Music) Eastview H.S., MN (Youth in Music) Eden Prairie H.S., MN (Youth in Music) River Falls H.S., WI (Youth in Music) Rosemount H.S., MN (Youth in Music) Waukesha North H.S., WI (local show @ Mukwonago) Rosemount is going to BOA St. Louis and Grand Nationals. Ben Harloff has moved from Rosemount H.S. to Eastview H.S. Eastview is already a pretty good band, I'll be watching to see what they do in the upcoming years.

FYI - Ben Harloff left Rosemount more than 3 years ago, has been teaching in several elementary schools before going to Eastview.

I hope BOA finds a way to work with YIM on scheduling. It would be unfortunate if they keep having conflicts in future years.

I hope BOA finds a way to work with YIM on scheduling. It would be unfortunate if they keep having conflicts in future years. The local marching schedules in the upper Midwest (MN/SD/IA/WI) are set pretty hard and fast, with the same events on the same weekends every year. YIM Championships are always the second Saturday in October, no exceptions. Iowa and Wisconsin have their final competitions the third Saturday in October. And even with these dates it's not totally unheard of to have snow flurries. With the exception of the few bands that do BOA Indy/STL/GN, that's when the season hard stops. I think this year might have been the issue of only having two open dates to choose from at UNI (9/25 and 10/9) and trying to balance out the overall BOA schedule. The last Saturday in September is an IDEAL date for an upper Midwest regional, so I'm not sure why BOA didn't go for that. The only thing I can think of is that there were already four other regionals on that date, and moving/changing any of them would have been more difficult than just scheduling Cedar Falls for 10/9.

Ouch, four home games in a row in October.
I wonder if BOA would consider the DakotaDome at the University of South Dakota. They have three open dates in a row next year (10/1, 10/8, 10/15) but one of those will be the USBands Quad State Marching Festival (unless USD changes affiliation for that show). Not sure if they'd want to host two shows in three weeks, or in back to back weeks. You'd probably lose the Chicago-area bands, but it would still be a reasonable trip for MN, IA, NE, KS, and western MO.
University of Iowa is open 10/1, also.
Heh. Getting ahead of ourselves. One year at a time.

Just play at Field of Dreams. The University of Dubuque or Drake would be decent options as well. I would definitely not bother with the University of Iowa. Ouch, four home games in a row in October. One year at a time. USD student here. As much as I would love to have a BOA regional here, Vermillion just isn't big enough to do that. There are only 3 decent hotels in town, so there would be a good amount of out-of-state bands who would either have to stay in Sioux Falls (50 miles) or Sioux City (30 miles). Attendance for the USBands competion here the last few years has been between 9-13 bands. And, while our dome has undergone renovations to seat more people that a BOA crowd could draw, the echo is just about as bad, if not worse, than the echo at the UNI-Dome.

They were planning on doing approximately 34,000 regionals this year. 2 and Nationals is much more manageable.

Confirmed: Waukee Northwest, IA This school is 9 days old. It opened for its first ever day of school on August 24th. It's only the second new high school in the entire STATE of Iowa in like the past 20 years. Waukee and West Des Moines are the fastest growing cities in the state. Waukee High was so overcrowded that Northwest is immediately taking ~1,300 10th-12th students in its first year. Waukee was one of Iowa's top bands, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Northwest hit the ground running.

The fact that schools across the midwest are actively consolidating often blows my mind.
