I would like to add my thoughts into this. I have been watching IL and BOA for some time and I've seen videos of a few of these groups.
1-3. (Camdenten, Grain Valley, Morton) Based on local results Camdenten and Grain Valley are looking strong. I think they are on equal ground, especially if you compare them both against Union. Morton hasn't competed since early September and even that didn't really give a good gauge of where they're at. I think this is the best they've ever been. I'm assuming a couple things here 1) jenks is back to about where they were in 2017 2) Morton improved enough this year to match that level. Using these assumptions and local results, I think that puts Morton at the same level as the other two. I think these three will be a close race for first, and prelims may not be very telling of the finals results.
⅘ (Prospect, Davenport Central) Based off local results it looks like Davenport is has stepped it up this year. I do expect Prospect to come out on top this time, however.
6-9 (Millard South, North, Independence, Bellevue West) The Millard schools both have strong programs in NE. I'm taking a semi-informed guess that South will come out on top. I feel that Bellevue isn't at the level they used to be, hence why I'm not betting on them. While I do think that the 2019 results aren't very telling of where a band will be this year, and 1A schools tend to not be very consistent, but I think they will perform well.
10-12 (Papilloin-LaVista South, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Waukee Northwest) I honestly know next to nothing about these bands.
13 (Ottumwa) based on local results I think they may get last.
I would also like to add that really anything can happen. This stadium is kinda bad and the 2019 results may not reflect this year's, not to mention the effects of Covid. Also the bands in parentheses are in order of how I think they are most likely to place.

I have a strong feeling we're going to get some disruption in the top 2 that people are expecting, but for now I'm going with the safe bet in my top 2 predictions:
1. Camdenton 2. Grain Valley 3. Millard North 4. Morton 5. Prospect 6. Papillion-La Vista South 7. Bellevue West 8. Independence 9. Davenport Central 10. Millard South 11. Cedar Rapids Prairie 12. Northwest 13. Ottumwa

Here are my Friday-before-competition thoughts:
I am thoroughly impressed with Morton. Does anyone have a numbers breakdown on them? They filled the field during that first part. Out of the top three, they probably have my favorite drill, but the execution could stand to be a bit cleaner. If that guard can get just a little more in time they’ll be phenomenal. I love the costumes- I caught that Cartwright-style spin at the beginning. Looks great. Not a first place show for me, but it’s powerful.
Grain Valley is my current pick to win this regional. I’m not incredibly enthusiastic about the visual or the sampling, but I think the music execution is phenomenal and the guard looks enormous. I believe I heard the announcer say there are 175 members, which is roughly 20 more than Camdenton. My prediction right now is that they’ll easily take the Music caption, but may struggle in GE. It’s a fun, lighthearted show, and doesn’t seem overly complicated. The nearly 3 point lead over Camdenton as of last weekend lends credence to the idea that they’ll take 1st, but until they’re on the same field, nothing can be said for sure.
Camdenton is returning to this regional after getting third in 2019, and has placed 1st in both invitationals attended so far, coming out impressively far ahead of former GN finalist Union last week. For the past two seasons, they’ve found no threat in Grain Valley- it seems the latter may be nearing back to its standing in 2017, where Grain Valley placed an incredibly impressive fifth place in finals at St. Louis. Camdenton’s show is markedly darker than the two above, with a strong low brassline prominent throughout the show and the signature spinning props, which are now three-sided rather than the two-sided A-frames that have become synonymous with the group. I worry that their success so far may make underclassmen cocky- over half of the band members will be attending their first-ever BOA event tomorrow. This will also be the new director’s first BOA event as head band director. I’m betting they will take GE, but I’m not certain first place is locked down to any one group.
Independence skipping out on finals is disappointing to hear, but seeing them once will at least be better than not at all. On my end I know that Independence was a favorite among Camdenton students, so I’m hoping they’ll manage to catch some of the show. All eyes will be on the top three at this regional, but I’m hoping the opportunity for everyone to compete in finals will be memorable for all of the students involved.

That's why I am so impressed with Grain Valley this year. I could see them getting top 6 at STL if they show the same results here.

Do we know who does Papillon La Vista’s guard? That was a VERY BA-esque show. I saw several Cartwright signature phrases in the flagwork. I’ll be shocked if it isn’t Wes or someone associated with that design group. I see a strong GE score out of this group.

Camdenton is COMMITTING to the creepiness of this show. That is going to set them apart here.

No way Prospect is not medalling tonight. That was insane! Their battery sounded totally overpowering, but I’m not watching in person. Hopefully it didn’t come across that way in person because if it did, I don’t think they will be medaling! 😅 Plus, we got Morton and Grain Valley coming up here soon!

Independence HS, IA has to be one my my favorite bands in the entire activity.
It speaks volumes about both instructional and group talent and integrity when you are an A band outperforming AAAA bands. You can see pride and a love for the activity on these students’ faces. Every single band in BOA can learn from the energy that this group brings to the field.

Grain Valley was phenomenal but not having their full show on the field could give some key competitors a slight edge.

Amazing, but where is the rest of Grain Valley’s show? I had them in an easy first until it ended so soon. Still blew me out of the water, but leaves me wanting more.

I’ve only watched seven groups here, and here’s how I see things going. The top three is really going to depend on how judges receive Grain Valley only having 2/3 of their show on the field despite what they have cleanly being a level above the rest.
1-3. Camdenton H.S., MO 1-3. Grain Valley H.S., MO 1-3. Morton H.S., IL 4. Bellevue West H.S., NE 5. Prospect H.S., IL 6. Independence H.S., IA 7. Davenport Central H.S., IA

I had not realized that Grain Valley’s band director is not who it was in 18 and 19. This new director has apparently been with the program for a long time and only just came in as head this season.

Is there a top 6 and bottom 6 for finals times at regionals? Yup! That’s a little disappointing for Bellevue West. When I saw them in prelims I was certain they’d see a medal in their class. AAA is tough!
