Class 5A: (116+ members) 81.375: Chino Hills High School, CA (Best Music, Visual, General Effect, and Percussion) 79.700: Senator Ruben S. Ayala Sr. High School, CA (Best Auxiliary)
*BREAKING NEWS!!* Chino Hills H.S. has beaten Ayala H.S. by 1.675 points. This is Ayala's first show post-Ike Jackson, correct? Kudos to whoever the new design team is; that's not an easy act to follow (especially given the circumstances of his firing). I am excited to see how, if at all, Ayala's style may shift. There's a lot of Blue Devils talent floating around that program. I could easily see their shows becoming even more fantastical (in the best way possible). That being said, I'm curious if this is the competitive spark that really gets Chino Hills going as one of CA's fall band powerhouses. They've been steady, garnering more and more success with each consecutive fall season these past few years (maybe for longer?). So in some sense, tonight doesn't surprise me. But I am shocked to see an outcome like this happen seemingly years ahead of schedule. I would love to see them consistently up there with Ayala, Homestead, and the other perennial greats from California!

Ayala's design team is:
Tim Trost and Kyle Martinez: band directors Key Poulan: musical coordinator and wind arrangements Darren Van Derpoel and Matt Hernandez: percussion design Peter Beckhart: visual/drill design Gabe Escobedo: auxiliary/choreography design
Regarding Chino Hills, they were the 2019 WBA Grand Champion, defeating NorCal powerhouse James Logan, Upland, Clovis North, and Homestead. Ayala didn't attend because of their Grand Nationals trip, and both Vista Murrieta and San Marcos rarely/never attend WBA Championships. Chino Hills has been a sleeping giant for a while, and obviously have had tremendous success in WGI. But it looks like they're finally starting to get the whole package together.

Wow, some crazy high scores for October 9th. If these scores stay consistent, I would have to believe that some bands (Rockford, PCEP, Jenison) will break 90 in the coming weeks when they begin their respective MCBA competitive seasons!

Does anyone have results from the PowerBand Classic? Seeing as how the event is now considered a Music for All affiliate regional, I find it odd that they haven’t posted results on MFA website yet like other regular regionals.

My mom was there and said they had some of the best percussion. But River Bluff guard is tough to beat. White Knoll apparently has an awesome piano player in the middle of the field (I imagine something similar to what CTJ has this year). Excited to see them on the webcast this weekend in Orlando.

I am not familiar with Nixa. Would they be a strong semifinals contender at a BOA GN? Still a long-shot for GN Semifinals. But, as uselesshoney said, they have been steadily improving. My ratings had Nixa at 75.61 (2017), 79.16 (2018), and 81.23 (2019). It usually takes 84-85 to make Semifinals at Grand Nationals. So, not impossible if Nixa can keep building on that momentum in 2021.

If you’re asking if they’re worth watching…absolutely! Nixa is one of my favorite groups. The kids have an enviable attitude that makes watching them entertaining beyond just the quality of performance.

I think they’d have a decent shot and you definitely don’t need an 84 to make semis, here’s the 30th place finish over the past few years 2019 - Panther Creek 82.05 2018 - Morton and Goshen 83.22 2017 - Bassett 82.57 2016 - Green Hope 84.3 2015 - Miamisburg 81.1 2014 - Panther Creek 80.85 2013 - Reeths Puffer and Lake Park 81.1 2016 was an insane lineup but most years an 81-82 will get you in the top 30.

As far as I could tell they don't even play another ncba sanctioned show this season.

As far as I could tell they don't even play another ncba sanctioned show this season. I do agree on the inflation. There was a huge difference in quality of bands there but I don't think it warranted scoring some of those bands so low. It just wasn't a show that required leaving that much scoring room. As for Piedmont, they were one of the only bands I got to see from the front. They're doing "Uncaged" in the same style that we see plenty of other decent bands do. I don't recall their exact repertoire but I believe it was all classical. Their last movement was visually messy and they were very hesitant musically so I think they had just added it in the last few days. Overall the rest of the show was pretty good though. I do think they could maybe be considered for being a top 10 or top 12 band in the state but I haven't seen anyone from outside the Charlotte area yet this year. They definitely would not challenge the top Raleigh area bands.

Has anybody heard anything about a western carolina show? They had an announcement up months ago but nothing since. It still says registration opens soon.

It's supposed to be held next weekend, Oct. 23, but I haven't seen a schedule or list of bands attending yet. The event was canceled in 2019 because of weather and in 2020 because of the pandemic, so the last time it was held was in 2018. Dobyns-Bennett is the only band from 2018 that has the event listed on their public calendar.

There was a show in central NC that Green Level won and Green Hope finished third. Scores not posted yet on NCBA. Based on the other bands present I would expect that Cary and Smithfield Selma were two and four but I don't know in which order.

I will be attending the Wisconsin state championships at UW-Whitewater this weekend. I will say, even though Wisconsin bands aren't the most competitive on the national scale, the WSMA always does a great job of getting top-tier national adjudicators for the state championships. The classifications are based on 9-12 school enrollment, but the numbers I have might not be exactly correct (they do make tweaks to balance the classes).

FWIW the show is not listed in the on-campus events calendar for the university. However it wouldn't surprise me if that means nothing since the show generally is held during their Fall break and isn't something that's going to draw students outside the music programs.
