Coming back to this. Songs by bands that were at Louder Than Life on Saturday when I was there. - Sugar by Strange Kids
- Emergency Contact by Pierce the Veil
- Throat by Afterlife
- Afterlife and Hail to the King by Avenged Sevenfold
A song that I just recently heard for the first time is Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) by Daughty. The entire time I listened to it, I could hear how it could be played by a band. I don't know if any of these songs would necessarily be good in a marching show, but I think they would all sound interesting. As a former “scene kid” I would love to hear more of this style of music in marching band shows! It might be cheesy but I've been thinking for a while that a show themed around The Black Parade would be cool lol. There's quite a selection of theatrical songs on that album that I feel like would translate well to a marching show

I would really love to see a band perform this song in a closer, or maybe a ballad. It reminds me of when Carmel used their orchestra in one of their shows for their closer to create a sort of "marching symphony". The part at 5:40 gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, and I think it would be incredible if it were played by someone like Hebron or Carmel. Then you may be pleased to learn that it was Broken Arrow's opener and closer in 2021.

Both shows were just OK. Belpre's was good enough for them to qualify for OMEA state finals for the first time since 2000. I thought Mentor's was slightly better.

Are there any other notable performances of Elsa's procession other than DB? Despite it being a popular piece, I don't see it performed all that often.

Are there any other notable performances of Elsa's procession other than DB? Despite it being a popular piece, I don't see it performed all that often. HONEY! I'm sure you know it's Phantom Regiment's corps song. So many wonderful recording of them playing it in different scenarios on YouTube. All of that came to a head in 2011, of course, when they closed their "Juliet" show with it, with Juliet finding Romeo dead and then killing herself to the song - the best & purest treatment of the piece by FAR to ever grace a football field (although DB 2016 comes close - I still get chills 7 years later when the mellos soar in with the melody). Broken Arrow did an entire show based off of Elsa in 2007, just after skyrocketing up to national stardom. The show was quite ahead of its time - it was a wild take on a Wagnerian fantasy, painted through the musical canvas of Elsa's Procession. It was esoteric and bizarre and not super-well received but remains one of my favorite BA shows - it would hold up well in today's field. They were with Aaron Guidry at the time, who was famous for taking some wide liberties with source material, but the backfield ending with the unaltered melody and the way it transitions into the fever dream ending is absolute gold. Owasso ended their wonderful 2015 Kill Bill show with Elsa; that was absolutely terrific. Prosper had a fabulous rendition of it to end their show (also entirely backfield), I think the year after they made GN Finals for the first time? Would've been just before Covid. It's been done by a number of other mid-level groups, but you are picking up on something interesting, dbbandalum - to my memory, none of the greats outside of BA have utilized it. No Avon, Carmel, Hebron, Marian, PCEP, Centerville, Lawrence, FloMo, Mason, Tarpon, Lassiter, Center Grove, Union, Bell, Reagan. I wonder why that is.

In new to the marching band world, so I’m not knowledgeable about the history of what bands have played, but from what I have seen, I feel like quite a few songs from Sigur Ros would make good pre-performance or opener songs. Basically anything from their Takk album.
Hoppipola would be a great opener in like a cosmos/northern lights or pandora-esque/ethereal show. Takk would be a great pre-performance. Glosoli could be modified to be a great opener. Med Blodnasir. Lots of great front ensemble centered opening music.
If anyone knows of any bands using Sigur Ros, I’d love to go listen/watch.

The first instance that I can think of that song in BOA was 1984 Chesterton IN. They finished 3rd with that show. That performance marked the end of Chesterton's glory years. Their very hands on director (Al Castronovo) left after that season and Chesterton was never the same after. Chesterton's use of panels as props in the opener was also very innovative for the time. That was my favorite Chesterton show.

Bixby used Hoppipola as a ballad in 2010. Show was called Day Dreams, I think, and definitely a different Bixby than we see today. I know another Oklahoma group used Sigur Ros this year because I remember hearing it at the Owasso contest. I can't remember which group!

I’m a classical music nerd (but I think most band kids are lol) and Dvorak is my all-time favorite composer. I’d love to see more of him in shows. His music is so dynamic and has so much going on that fits perfectly together that it’d be great. It’d love to see how some of his string quartets could be arranged to fit the timbre of like a wind quartet. It’d be cool for a whole show to use his music, because seriously, it’s incredible. It would HAVE to include some Symphony No. 9 movement IV, duh lol. That’d be a great finish since everyone knows it. Or even a great start.

Definitely a different show than their current one lol. I didn’t go to Owasso, but I did go the RR this year and don’t remember any Sigur Ros, so maybe I can figure out who went to Owasso but not RR and pinpoint the show. If you remember, though, please let me know!

Wakeland H.S., TX: "A Sense of Direction" Musical Selections: "Before Time" by Thomas Bergersen "Piano Concerto in G Major" by Howard Hanson "Ára bátur" by Sigur Rós "NO one To kNOW one" by Andy Akiho "Red" by Thomas Bergersen

The first minute & 25 seconds is just build up, but I think the rest of this especially 2:10 till the end could be arranged into a fun show.
I almost forgot there's also an orchestral version to pull from, but you have all the impact moments in the original!

There are a few: -Come Sunday by Omar Thomas -Metroplex by Robert Sheldon-New Mistake by Jellyfish -Bye, Bye, Bye by Jellyfish -Little Dark Age by MGMT -Plantasia by Mort Garson -In Close Harmony by Adrian Baker and Roy Morgan -My Time by bo en -Hammerhead by Simon HaseleyAll of these tunes different in their own ways. Many can be used as an opener, ballad, or closer to a show. Would love to see them on a field some day. As I'll be noting momentarily in a different thread, your second item on that list will be played this year. There's still a definitive take to be done on "Metroplex," because Grove City's version only included the last third of the piece. They did well by the woodwind runs from the original, though. Your suggestion of "Hammerhead" got me thinking that a band should perform Holst's "Hammersmith," but I see from a boahistorybuff post that Lassiter did that back in 1994.

Literally anything by John Powell. That man is a genius when it comes to music. I know he writes mainly movie sound tracks but man if a band manages someday to pull off his music well, I’d pay to see that. That music he writes is incredibly powerful and I think it would actually sound pretty cool in a show.

Blue Springs did Time by Hans Zimmer from Inception. I really really really want to see someone do Cornfield Chase by Hans Zimmer from Interstellar.
Or Mountains by Hans Zimmer from Interstellar

Thought I’d add another inclusion in here as well. Just very gentle and heartfelt, could be some kind of opening material for really slow build ups, but would definitely make itself at home more so as a ballad!
