I've been listening to a lot of rock/heavy metal bands because I'm going to Louder Than Life this fall with my son. I keep finding myself imagining how the music would sound if it were played by a marching/concert band. I'll try to list some specific songs, but it's been an interesting thought project.

There are a few: -Come Sunday by Omar Thomas -Metroplex by Robert Sheldon-New Mistake by Jellyfish -Bye, Bye, Bye by Jellyfish -Little Dark Age by MGMT -Plantasia by Mort Garson -In Close Harmony by Adrian Baker and Roy Morgan -My Time by bo en -Hammerhead by Simon Haseley All of these tunes different in their own ways. Many can be used as an opener, ballad, or closer to a show. Would love to see them on a field some day. As I'll be noting momentarily in a different thread, your second item on that list will be played this year.

Weyes Blood supremacy when? Is "Supremacy" a song by Weyes Blood? If so, I haven't heard that one. She's got a great voice, and I'm glad to have encountered some of her work (thanks to some 2018 tweets by Seth Abramson, of all people), but none of it has really grabbed me.

In all seriousness, Weyes Blood songs seems to tend well for pageantry arts. I'd be interested in seeing one of her songs as ballad, maybe something off of Titanic Rising.

Titanic Rising is one of my favorite albums I've listened to somewhat recently and some of those tracks could be stunning on the field. Could also be an excuse to have a slide guitar solo.

Definitely more pieces by John Mackey need to be featured in marching band shows but my top picks for some of his pieces are:
1. Aurora Awakes 2. Sheltering Sky 3. This Cruel Moon

Weyes Blood supremacy when? Like a complete nerd, I have TONS of Spotify playlists in a folder with each being a show idea. I had a show idea called "Pearlescence", and for the ballad I imagined using "It's Not Just Me, It's Everybody" by Weyes Blood. Great song. She's an amazing artist.

How many bands have shows with music by Thomas Bergersen? Likely hundreds. Thomas Bergersen and Two Steps from Hell are very frequently programmed. So much good material to pull from!

I believe Marian Catholic programmed it two or three times in the 2010s as well.

I've recently been listening to The Amazing Devil's album "Ruin", I think a ton of the tracks would work very well on the field with how dynamic they are and the general musical shape. The Calling is the one I could see working best in marching band, but the title track sounds like it was written to be performed by a winter guard.

I feel like as a genre, prog rock is strangely under utilzied in the marching band world. Earlier in the thread I suggested Zappa, but the subject matter of some of his music is too crude for a largely youth activity. However, I think musical works from bands like Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, etc. etc. lend themselves very well to marching band/drumcorps.
There are so many golden opportunities for musical effect moments in this piece. If arranged/designed correctly and pulled off by a great hornline it would be spectacular.

I haven’t listened to this yet so I can’t speak for this particular piece, but prog rock doesn’t get programmed for two big reasons. The first is perceived buy-in, or lack thereof, from the kids. The second is because a lot of prog-rock is multi-metered. Even the best groups don’t often march too much mixed meter.

Fair point, but hearing something this unique on a field would be such a breath of fresh air. Also really suggest taking a listen to it. If you listen to alot of jazz and classical it's pretty accessible. Yes has made a lot of good music but Close to the Edge is far and away their magnum opus.

I always love hearing fresh material on the field rather than the same arrangement of Fly to Paradise or The Sound of Silence performed by 50 different groups.

Every time I hear it I audibly groan.

I think if I heard a band play this I might cry. If arranged well, I feel like this could be a really powerful piece to perform on the field

I think it would work very well with an elegant and serious Cartwright design. But maybe I just have the flute trio from the 2021 opener on my mind 😙

Actually, I want some repeats. I want Broken Arrow to play “time to say goodbye” again and I want Dobyns-Bennett to play “Elsa’s Procession” again.
