This CTJ show really isn’t my cup of tea, but they are LOUD. So many starts and stops, it’s amazing the pacing doesn’t suffer that much It's interesting you say that, as I did have some trouble enjoying the show due to the pacing and transitions. It's a common theme I find myself thinking of with a lot of CTJ shows. There have been some years where I feel like they just absolutely nail it take me on an amazing ride (Enigmatic, Forest, etc.), but plenty of others where I feel like things are so disjointed. Not my cup of tea either, but even with that said, I recognize this show is likely going to be top 3 by the end of this weekend, and make just as hard of a run at GN. They're just too good.

What an.. interesting show. CTJ never fails to do something whacky. I love the emphasis they put on preshows. Can someone explain why they had maybe 5 or so members wearing a fully black version of their uniform? The only thing I could think is “opposites attract” but it wasn’t enough people to convince me it was that idea. I’d be shocked if this isn’t in the top half at nationals. that’s their floor if anything, even though they’ve historically not had the best placements at GN when they’ve went, if they place well in SA finals to start(top 3 let’s say) they’ll be well set for Nationals coming up in a week!

Coppell posted a video to their social medias this morning with the buses leaving for San Antonio. Wonder what happened that they had to move times. My boyfriend is a VRHS grad and claims it's a curse on the Mandarins prop. It's not the prop that is the issue, though- just the curse.

I’m not a fan of the uniforms. But that might of beat Crossing Boundaries for me as my favorite show from TWHS 😂

Ugh. I know I'm mostly alone on this, but that show is one hot mess of a design. I get that that's CTJ's aesthetic, and they do it unapologetically, and I appreciate that. It's just not my cup of tea. It's a straight-forward theme that has so many unnecessary and mismatched layers added in that it becomes convoluted. I still maintain that from the banjo break on, all momentum in the show just stops. The band of course is incredible. The guard is fantastic. Drumline is insanely good. I love hearing and watching them perform. Just not my design aesthetic. Not alone 😁

You’re totally right though, this is the second time a band with that prop has had their performance pushed back. That’s a really weird coincidence.

Is The Woodlands colorguard the best ever from any Texas band? It's exciting to see them level up near Avon/Carmel/Tarpon standards.

Woodlands definitely got better throughout the performance. They have some OUTSTANDING soloists in that group (trombone and tenor sax were incredible) and they perform the cabaret theme very well. It's not my preferred style of show from them, but I can't deny they perform it excellently. As for CTJ, they're definitely one of those bands where you either love their all out design choices or hate them. I just happen to love them

I’d have to disagree. It’s kind of Avon 2010 but trying too hard I really don’t see the comparison to Avon 2010, maybe a comparison to Plymouth-Canton 1999 works better, or maybe even Avon 2008 but not Avon 2010. The mash up of opposite music being mixed… that was where I was going. Maybe my brain isn’t working

The Woodlands show is super fun. Similar vibes as Leander except basically on steroids, haha. I think they aren't quite clean enough as CTJ and Vandegrift.
My personal rankings for today (by tiers):
CTJ Vandegrift
The Woodlands
Keller Cedar Park Leander Rouse? (didn't catch them but I would assume they'll be around here)
Cedar Ridge Westwood Round Rock James Bowie
Timber Creek
Jack C Hays

Both were shows based around the mash ups of opposite pieces of music.

It’s supposed to be mismatched layers, it’s supposed to be convoluted and all over the place. That’s the aim of the show. It’s how it all comes together in those sweet moments, like She’s Always A Woman that you really see the show for all it is. I really think the Banjo Break is a generational thing, I think it fits great a transition and represents the theme very sweetly.

If Brennan had a performance this good at area they genuinely could’ve challenged Brandeis, and challenged for a spot at state.

The show does come together in some glimmering moments of continuity, although those are a little few & far between for me. The end of the opener is one of my favorite parts of the show with those crunchy dissonances in the brass. And I forgot to mention how fantastic the singer is, and how well her tone is incorporated into the ensemble sound.

There is no denying the CTJ band probably was the best musically today (maybe only vandy is better or equal). But since 2018 CTJ has been throwing so many pieces of music in their book it is hard for there to be a great build and it is hard to get your effect across if the music is too short. Not saying it can’t work to some degree but when hits and soloists just come out of nowhere it seems off. I do not think it is show specific
