Marian Catholic has dropped. They will be attending Lincoln-Way instead and going up against Morton. Wow! That’s disappointing news. I was really looking forward to seeing them here. I guess that’s another finals spot for a deserving band…I’ll have to find a video somewhere after the season. Good luck to them at Lincoln-Way!

Marian Catholic has dropped. They will be attending Lincoln-Way instead and going up against Morton. Wait, if that brings it down to 64 bands, doesn't that now not meet the minimum threshold for 2 panels being necessary for prelims? Anyone that knows feel free to correct me if I'm wrong I'd assume it sticks since it's all been planned for and judge contracts have been signed by now

All right, now that we're a week away, here are my final predictions:
1. Broken Arrow H.S., OK - Panel 2 2. Blue Springs H.S., MO - Panel 1 3. Mustang H.S., OK - Panel 2 4. L.D. Bell H.S., TX - Panel 2 5. O'Fallon Township H.S., IL - Panel 2 6. Grain Valley H.S., MO - Panel 2 7. Lake Travis H.S., TX - Panel 1 8. Bentonville H.S., AR - Panel 1 9. Lincoln H.S., SD - Panel 2 10. Lakota West H.S., OH - Panel 2 11. Nixa H.S., MO - Panel 2 12. Blue Springs South H.S., MO - Panel 1 13. Southmoore H.S., OK - Panel 2 14. Millard West H.S., NE - Panel 1
This is going off the assumption that the panel system remains in place. I think if it stays, the final 4 bands will all come from the 2nd panel.

With Marian out, it lightens up panel 1 (which to me was the lighter panel to begin with). I would say that definitely makes it more likely we see a band like Yukon make finals.

In other news- I’m really hoping Champion of Champions can fall on a different weekend this year so that we can see some more Columbia area bands. Rock Bridge is wonderful, and IMO could be a recognizable name in BOA within a few years if they wanted to go in that direction. Battle has a formidable color guard (under the direction of Mizzou’s Ionic WG director). Outside of Columbia, in my dreams I see Lee’s Summit HS picking up some competitive ground as well- with the right competitive drive I could see their program contending with other big KC programs like Blue Springs/South and Grain Valley. I have no reason to count them out, so I expect to see Camdenton back here to reclaim that finals placement. Could this be the year we see Nixa HS in finals as well? After the last few years I’m optimistic…provided we don’t see the Texas bands that will inevitably show up. It would be nice to see Kickapoo and FZN climb back up as well. It’s December and my head is already in October of 2022! Now that it's a little under a week away, let's see what I hit or miss here: Champion of Champions is once again the same day, which disappoints me if only because I really wish I could go to both. As usual, Hickman will be here, while Rock Bridge and Battle will remain in Columbia. Hickman seems to be having a great year so far, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing them Friday afternoon. Lee's Summit has been doing fairly well, though I really want to see more - perhaps a community-style band taking from all three schools a la Lincoln-Way. A girl can dream, right? Camdenton will not be here, and I'm a little disappointed by that as well. This would have been a fantastic year for the band to comeback from the letdown that finals last year was. Though, on the other hand, I'm very excited to see them at Indy - I just can't help but think this would have been a great year to maybe even shoot for top half. I'm seriously confident in Nixa this season! I don't want to jinx it, but I'm looking forward to potentially seeing the show twice this weekend. They've only been getting better, and the program is a really admirable one. Kickapoo is also missing, as they and Camdenton have opted to attend the Branson Invitational. I don't want to make the call too soon on FZN, but some inconsistencies this season make me skeptical. If the band delivers the product they did last weekend, I certainly won't count them out. This year will be a fantastic opportunity for some bands that have deserved finals for a while, or have been out in recent years, to see a second performance. I'm sad not seeing Camdenton, Kickapoo, Rosemount, Morton, Bellevue West, and Marian Catholic here. But those all open up spots for some other really fantastic groups. I'll be there both days ready for a great weekend of band!

I was planning on attending this one live but due to crazy hotel and travel costs these days, I’ve decided to stay home and watch it online instead. I hate to miss it!

To be brutally honest, it feels like Marian has given up on all BOA events (with the exception of nationals) since 2019. Albeit a rough season for them, they still came out on top — it makes me wonder if 2019 losses at Iowa and Indy Super turned the program off from early/mid season BOA competitions.
The question begs: Will we ever see Marian at another BOA event before November again?

I don’t know too much about the bottom half/bubble bands, so here’s my bland medalist predictions that add absolutely nothing to this conversation!
🥇Broken Arrow, OK 🥈Blue Springs, MO 🥉Mustang, OK
Note: Lake Travis, O’Fallon, and possibly Bell will all give Mustang a run for their money.

The question begs: Will we ever see Marian at another BOA event before November again? They were forced to withdraw from multiple competitions (including Iowa) last year due to transportation issues - it wasn't a matter of "giving up" on BOA events. Dropping out of St. Louis gives them a chance to see where they're going to stack up against Morton this weekend at Lincoln-Way, as barring any surprises, they'll likely finish at Lincoln-Way 1-2 and ISU 1-2 as well. BOA could have a possibility to move the Indy regional back to the weekend before Nationals in 2023 and 2024, as there is a break in between ISSMA state finals and Nationals currently planned over the next 2 years. If that happens, they'll be there.

The 2023 FFA convention will be during Nov. 1-4 2023 with Grand Nationals the immediate following weekend, so I highly doubt Indy Super will be moving to the week before next year. However.... The 2024 FFA convention is Oct. 23-26, 2024 with ISSMA state finals being Nov. 2nd. The Indy Super will probably be moved to the week before GN's at that point.

Also humorous to me that when they adjusted the panel assignments the decided to continue to call the first block panel 2 (and to end with panel 1).

Panel 2 is extremely stacked here. The composition of bands assigned to each panel has changed significantly. Is your comment based on the updated schedule?

Officially just booked my tickets to finals! This is actually my first in-person BOA event, and I am super excited! Will be watching Prelims via Box5 on the drive, and of course my predictions will be coming in the next couple of days! Got to reevaluate these panel changes LOL

I know this is veering off topic a bit, but I felt I should drop a history tidbit here. It was 25 years ago that BOA debuted the St Louis regional. Setting the Covid 2021 season aside, there has been a regional in St. Louis every year since. It became a super regional in 2004.
I happened to be at that inaugural St Louis regional back in 1997. I was actually rooting for McGavock HS TN mainly because they were a good band that I was most familiar with. Well McGavock actually finished in second place. The band that won was a band that I had heard of, but really was not that familiar with. It was the first time I had ever seen them perform. That band was Broken Arrow and that compition marked their first ever BOA regional title.

Is the Dome going to continue to host the BattleHawks when Centene Stadium opens? Is 5 BattleHawks games, the regional, a random monster truck date, etc. going to be enough to pay for upkeep? The tax money that goes to the upkeep goes away in 2024.

Well this is a concern - you know those plants have further broken up an already rough lot and now there will be roots and stumps from some of that larger brush to catch wheels, stub toes, and twist ankles. It's usually cleaned up by volunteers, but I don't know that it's ever looked quite so bleak. It tore up one of our props back in 2017...I can't imagine navigating it now. I don't like to be negative or bring negativity out into the world, but I'm having a really hard time being positive looking at the state of things here. It's just plain embarrassing for the city, and I worry about the safety of the kids. At the least, I'm really hoping that the attending bands' directors prepare their students beforehand. The volunteers that have made things manageable in the past are heroes.

A lot has changed. Nothing beats walking back to buses after retreat getting gravel dust all over your uniform and shoes. I remember my sophomore year we literally had a staff member wiping our white shoes off with a Clorox wipe before we went into the dome. Guess they are walking through a jungle this year 😂 Although it would be outside. I wonder if they could have a regional at Arrowhead in KC. I guess logistically St.Louis might be better. There used to be a dci show at Arrowhead before my time iirc.

Even in its rundown state, St. Louis is still much better logistically. Arrowhead is an open dome with real grass, and Memorial Stadium in Columbia is not only an open dome but is also already hosting a competition at the same time. The only covered dome I can think of that’s relatively close is the UNI Dome, though it’s significantly smaller (alongside other issues).
