Updated Austin Rankings: 1. Cedar Ridge 2. Vandegrift 3. Vista Ridge 4. Cedar Park ------------------------- 5. Round Rock ------------------------- 6. Rouse 7. Westlake 8. Hendrickson 9. James Bowie ------------------------- 10. Westwood 11. Moe and Gene Johnson 12. Lake Travis 13. Leander ------------------------- 14. Dripping Springs 15. McNeil 16. Tom Glenn 17. Jack C. Hays ------------------------- 18. Lake Belton 19. McCallum 20. Liberty Hill 21. Weiss 22. Midway ------------------------- 23. Belton 24. Anderson 25. Harker Heights ------------------------- Next 5: Austin, Bastrop, Lehman, Georgetown, Pflugerville For reference for folks outside of Texas who may not be familiar with the area we are talking about here... The Austin MSA has a population of about 2.1 million people. Of the 25 bands on that list, only Lake Belton, Midway, Belton and Harker Heights are outside the Austin MSA. It is quite a concentration of marching bands that I would put up against anywhere else in the country. It's also part of why I love going to football games. Besides loving football, you usually are seeing two really good bands. Funny enough in the DFW II Regional thread, in our little “DFW vs. Austin” ker-fuffle-scuffle over on TxBands(tee hee) I made the point of DFW having great depth in their bands, I’d argue more than Austin Area, but of course DFW has the advantage of being just about 3 times the size of Austin in MSA population size, so of course they should be, right?😂 Even then, y’all are deeper than I believe Houston Area to be imo and they’re right at the same size as DFW, if not bigger, so Austin being a “smaller” region when talking about Texas scale ofc and being as mighty as they are in the activity as they continue to showcase every year, they do punch above their weight!! Even though I still have my regional preference(😝) much respect is deserved.

Wisconsin rankings as of 10/15/2022
Top 10 overall scoring bands at today’s State Championships.
1. Greendale 2. Sauk Prairie 3. River Falls 4. Oak Creek 5. Cumberland 6. Baldwin-Woodville 7. Waukesha North 8. Milton 9. Middleton 10. Mukwonago
I would still put Oak Creek second, factoring in overall history, but they are having a bit of a down year and they are about half their usual size. Time to start marching freshmen!

Missouri Rankings 10/16
Blue Springs (Kansas City) ————————— Grain Valley (Kansas City) Blue Springs South (Kansas City) Camdenton (Lake of the Ozarks) Lindbergh (St. Louis) Kickapoo (Springfield) Nixa (Springfield) Timberland (St. Louis) Fort Zumwalt North (St. Louis) Hickman (Columbia) ————————— Washington (St. Louis) Francis Howell (St. Louis) Rock Bridge (Columbia) Oakville (St. Louis) Sullivan (St. Louis)
Notable changes: Blue Springs South and Lindbergh make finals at St. Louis, pushing them up. Camdenton narrowly loses to Van Buren (AR) at the Branson Invitational, moving them down. Hickman places well at St. Louis and is the runner-up at Champion of Champions. Timberland, Washington and Francis Howell place well at St. Louis. Grain Valley places bottom half in finals, preventing them from moving up into the Blue Springs tier.

I'll try TN
1. DB 2. Bartlett 3. Ravenwood 4. Elizabethton 5. Franklin 6. Father Ryan 7.Harden Valley 8. Siegal 9. Seymour 10. Science Hill
I may be wrong about Franklin, but I saw that they were moved down to AA which doesn't seem like a good sign to me. Any arrangement of 6-9 would be realistic as well

Ohio is super fun this year so I’ll try to do one for it!
1. Mason - - - - - - - 2. Centerville - - - - - - - 3. Beavercreek 4. Grove City 5. Lakota East 6.Miamisburg 7: Lakota West 8: Dublin Coffman - - - - - - - - - - - 9. Kings 10. Milford - - - - - - - 11. Hilliard Darby 12. West Clermont 13. Hilliard Bradley 14. Forest Hills 15. Fairfield 16. Kettering Fairmont
Definitely think most of these could change. Ohio top 10 are all super close right now in my opinion and then it has been quite the scuffle for the spots below that. 3 and 4 could go either way, they were very close score wise at Ohio State Last night. Two bands I think could go even higher are West Clermont and Kings. Both have certainly been gaining momentum so It’ll be cool to see how they look at state finals!

I guess I'll take the onus of doing Indiana. As with all rankings, for fun and simply my opinion. I have not had a chance to see ALL of these groups yet, so have to make some assumptions, but it's a start....as of 10/3/22....probably.... (shrugs) 1. Carmel 2. Avon 3. Fishers 4. Brownsburg 5. Homestead 6. Goshen 7. Center Grove 8. Castle 9. Carroll 10. Westfield ------------------------- 11. Columbus Bands 12. MPLT 13. Floyd Central 14. Penn 15. Concord 16. Jasper 17. Noblesville 18. Greenfield-Central 19. Greenwood 20. Evansville North I know this is before regionals but Franklin Central(4th @ regionals) was not in the top 20 although they beat Center Grove and I’ve heard from a friend that they also beat Castle and Brownsburg in music at that comp as well

I’ll try my best with the Bluegrass State. Just one person’s opinion mind you.
KY BAND RANKINGS
1. Lafayette 2. Bourbon County 3. Madison Central 4. Anderson County 5. Beechwood
These are definitely the top 5, gets pretty murky after that. Things have shifted from the beginning of the season. Lafayette took an early loss to MC, but has come back to win 2 contests where 2 of the other top 5 bands were also competing, including topping MC this weekend. The most interesting class is definitely AAA with Beechwood, Estill, Adair, Garrard, and Murray too close to call. This upcoming weekend begins semifinal regionals for all classes except for 5A. Also several bands are traveling to Indy for the BOA Super Regional. I ranked Bourbon ahead of MC based off the Louisville BOA results, although MC topped them this weekend. It’s just a preference over show sound and design for me.

Pretty reasonable, but some points worth considering are: --Has West Clermont appeared at an OMEA event? I think they usually stick to MSBA. If so, they won't be at "state finals," but if you meant MSBA finals (on Nov. 5), then carry on. --Norton got a higher score than Fairfield yesterday at OSU. --Also yesterday, Archbishop Alter made Finals at the BOA Johnson City regional, placing 7th with a score of 76.35. And three weeks ago, they beat Kings by three places and more than five points at the BOA Toledo regional.

I realized I messed that up right after I posted but I figured the point came across anyway, ah well! Hmm, seems my love for kings overrode my senses lol. Am also just remembering they were beaten my Milford at a fairly recent MSBA event (Campbell maybe? I forget already) I’m not nearly as familiar with some of these bands as I should be. I’d probably stick Alter in 9th (for now), knock kings below Milford… and then where ever Hilliard Bradley ends up after all that I’d stick Norton perhaps a bit ahead. Alter is where I am most tentative: are they on par with bands such as Miamisburg and the Lakotas? I knew they were quite a solid program, I didn’t know they 5 pointed Kings though sooo… once again I am not knowledgeable enough for this 😦

Hmm, seems my love for Kings overrode my senses lol. . . . I didn’t know [Alter] 5-pointed Kings though sooo... once again I am not knowledgeable enough for this 😦 Nobody knows everything! Look at me, who's seen well over a thousand Ohio band performances over the past decade, woefully misdescribing Grove City's current style over in the Ohio thread. We carry on because it's fun, not because we're perfect. (I'd never even heard of Kings before seeing them at state finals in 2014, when I shocked at how big a band as small as they were sounded. My favorite of theirs to date is probably "Over It" from 2017, which I did not get to see at state finals because of the severe weather that cancelled most of the performances that day.)

Franklin has hovered near the AA/AAA cut line in number of students in the school for several years. An unusually large Senior class last year coupled with a smaller Sophomore class this year may be what happened to drop them below the cut line.

We'll have to see if Morton can keep Marian at bay at ISU. It'll be a tight race for sure! As a side note, when I marched for Morton back in '09 - '12, we never would have even dreamed of coming close to Marian let alone surpassing them. It's quite the testament to the kids' hard work!

Updating all the regional rankings since I forgot to last week
Central (Austin, Waco, College Station, etc.):
1. Cedar Ridge 2. Vandegrift 3. Vista Ridge 4. Cedar Park 5. Round Rock 6. Westlake 7. Rouse 8. Hendrickson 9. James Bowie 10. Moe and Gene Johnson 11. Westwood 12. Lake Travis Next 3: Dripping Springs, Leander, McNeil
East (Houston, Longview, Texarkana, etc.): 1. The Woodlands 2. Cy-Fair 3. Bridgeland 4. Pearland 5. Stephen F. Austin 6. Cypress Woods 7. Seven Lakes 8. Klein Oak 9. Friendswood 10. College Park 11. Oak Ridge 12. Clear Brook Next 3: Foster, Jordan, Klein Cain
North (Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, etc.): 1. Hebron 2. Flower Mound 3. Marcus 4. Coppell 5. Wakeland 6. L.D Bell 7. Keller 8. Waxahachie 9. Lone Star 10. Timber Creek 11. Wylie East 12. Prosper Next 3: Carroll, Duncanville, Rock Hill
South (San Antonio, Laredo, Brownsville, etc.): 1. Ronald Reagan 2. Claudia Taylor Johnson 3. Louis D. Brandeis 4. John B. Alexander 5. Roma 6. Sandra Day O'Connor 7. Winston Churchill 8. New Braunfels 9. Del Rio 10. Tom C. Clark 11. Sharyland 12. John Paul Stevens Next 3: Harlingen, Homer Hanna, William J. Brennan
West (El Paso, Midland, Amarillo, etc.): 1. Permian 2. J.M. Hanks 3. Pebble Hills 4. Midland 5. Frenship 6. Eastlake 7. San Angelo Central 8. Coronado (El Paso) 9. Legacy (Midland) 10. Parkland 11. Horizon 12. Lubbock-Coopers Next 3: Canyon, Monterey, Randall
It's too hard to do good small band rankings as of now, so instead of trying again I'll just give basic updates: First of all, Pecos very surprisingly got a 2 at UIL and not for a penalty or ineligibility or anything like that. The main bands to keep an eye on for Area A will be the three Canyon ISD schools (Canyon, Randall, and West Plains) as well as shout-outs to Hereford and Andrews. Big news in DFW with Celina winning a competition in Winnsboro (I wasn't aware of it until a good friend sent me the results) over strong competitors like Mount Pleasant (an ETX 5A who has been improving drastically in recent years). China Spring's BOA Bedford placement is concerning at first glance, but they also had a slow start last year before comfortably making State Finals. Mineola's performance on Saturday at BOA Prosper is not close to the standard for the band, so while they are still one of the stronger 3A bands in the state, they probably aren't quite as close to the top of these rankings. Super curious to see how Area plays out over the next 2 weeks as that will be the easiest time to bring back the small school rankings.

Brand new here, but I've been reading for a few months and had a question: Grew up in marching band in Southern California, anyone brave enough to do one of these for the two halves of CA? I assume the old greats have changed positions recently.

I'd love for them to do ISU one year instead of staying south and going to Missouri every year - they'd probably make finals most years.

Because the region is small, if I were to combine both states into a "PNW" region, the ranks would shake up to be: 1. Grants Pass (OR) 2. Kamiak/Ridgeline (WA) 4. Sherwood (OR) 5. Cheney (WA) 6. West Salem (OR) 7. Mead (WA) 8. Mountainside (OR) 9. Century (OR) 10. Mt. Spokane (WA) 11. Roseburg (OR) 12. Chiawana (WA) 13. A.C. Davis (WA) 14. Sunset (OR) 15. Sheldon (OR)
The dynamic in the PNW has certainly shifted. Now there are multiple bands from Washington who can stand their own against Oregon bands. Historically, Oregon bands have always been better. Is this a result of Covid? Maybe. To my eyes, it seems that Oregon bands have actually dipped in quality while some Washington bands have gone up. West Salem especially, having gone undefeated for YEARS, is now having trouble keeping up their reputation.
Just 5 years ago, even Central Valley, the best band in Washington, couldn't hold a candle to West Salem's quality. Now the newly opened Ridgeline (with the same director and staff that Central Valley had) is beating them. Kamiak, used to landing in the 6th-4th range in Oregon competitions, is now one of the top marching bands in the region, giving Grants Pass a run for their money last year (they have yet to compete against each other yet). It's an exciting time for band up here.

I’ll try my best with the Bluegrass State. Just one person’s opinion mind you. KY BAND RANKINGS 1. Lafayette 2. Bourbon County 3. Madison Central 4. Anderson County 5. Beechwood These are definitely the top 5, gets pretty murky after that. What ever happened to Adair County?? I remember they dominated 1A for during my high school career. They were Class A rep at grand nats for 4 years straight and then just disappeared.

West (El Paso, Midland, Amarillo, etc.): 1. Permian 2. J.M. Hanks 3. Pebble Hills 4. Midland 5. Frenship 6. Eastlake 7. Coronado (El Paso) 8. Legacy (Midland) 9. Parkland 10. Horizon 11. Bel Air 12. Lubbock-Cooper Next 3: Abilene, Monterey, Randall First of all, Pecos very surprisingly got a 2 at UIL and not for a penalty or ineligibility or anything like that. I am slightly biased, but I do think they still deserve to be ahead of or within the first outs considering their placement at Midland as they were well ahead of both Abilene and Randall. The 2 is not characteristic of them considering how surprising it was, and their show is a little more BOA-centric anyways. They still have a BOA San Antonio performance yet!
