The subjectivity of the judging is why i dont care as much about results. There is always someone left out of semis that people talk about on saturday. I just love seeing what people can accomplish when they come together for something they love to do. Music is universal and transcends language and visuals can sell the story with no language at all. Imagine a movie with no music or words. It would be terrible lol

There is a video of Jurassic Park without music and it feels so empty and it's actually pretty hilarious. Movies are nothing without music

As much as I love Adagio Presto, 2016 is the best example of why I believe that if you’re going to break ties at all, it should be by judge’s preference and not GE.

On Finals night, 5 of the 7 judges scored Avon higher than Carmel, but because the two judges that scored Carmel higher were GE judges, Carmel wins the title? It’s never really made sense to me

It all came down to the visual effect judge since the combined music effect scores were tied. I loved both shows and thought they were both GN Champion performances. BOA now allows ties when it determines regional and national titles. That rule originated from the 2016 tie. So I appreciate that BOA saw this as an issue and made an effort to rectify it so it does not happen again. There have been many times where one judge was the deciding factor for a band winning a title or making finals. The judging at BOA has actually improved significantly over the decades. There are far less controversial decisions as there were in the past, which is a good thing. Seeing as MFA/BOA kicked us off and closed their forums, I feel I have a little more freedom in dishing out some of the more controversial judging decisions as I go through the season reviews.

Furthermore, I remember the scoring system being changed that year too to be much more specific after allowing thousands of a point. I think some were upset about the ties being allowed and glossed over the possible fact that they would probably occur less. I personally thought it was a good move because 1. this was once over-the-moon effect in 2016, I highly doubted we would see it happen again and 2. at least the changes to champions were introduced with changes in scoring system.

Here is some perspective on boa San Antonio the last three years for you.

In 2016, the James Madison High school band, on the tail end of an outstanding season for them, placed 31st out of 63 with an overall score of 77.000 points. Seems normal, right? Fast forward to 2017, with not as good of a season the same school dropped 24 places to 55th but only dropped to a score of 73.15. 31st place required a score of around 81 points that year, showing how competitive that year was. Notice something yet? Fast forward to 2018, Madison is having their best season ever, and scores an 82.600 in prelims, but it only earned them 40th place. That score in 2016 would have placed them in ninethinth behind... vista ridge, and 5 places out of finals. But no, my friend. San Antonio, a super regional now expanded to over 80 bands, has gotten so insanely competitive that the finals - qualifying score grew nearly 5 points in just three years. Wow. Semifinals please?

Yes they have, they won a regional in 1997?? Previous to that it was only Irmo, and I’m not sure when they won their first...and only?. It took 14 more years for the next one with Fort Mill in 2011. (Of course Wando could have won a weaker regional really anytime 05 on but their location to regionals didn’t help matters)

I’m not sure when Byrnes started to retreat from BOA but it was around the middle of the 00’s. They were still good but we’re doing very basic almost show band shows - much like Grove city up until 2012. Bryan bone revived the program with a complete 180 in 2013 (with part of tarpons 2009 show). They were the bell of the ball at 5A state in 2013 - everyone couldn’t stop talking about them and when I saw them in finals I knew a new beast had been unleashed on the competitive circuit in the southeast marching band world. Sort of like Castle 2013.

They returned to BOA the next year (not sure how long of a hiatus - probably 19 years). Placing forth right behind Fort Mill who was right behind Kennesaw Mountain.

That Jacksonville regional was quite a turning page for what was to come for the competitive band scene in the future southeast.

Edit: they won in 1999.

Like Jeremiah likes to say, the more things change the more they stay the same.😉

Edit: they attended Atlanta Super in 2007 and Jacksonville in 2014 so it was only a 7 year hiatus.

The southeast generally changed a lot that year. I would argue that Byrnes and Bassett both reawakened in 2013...both to basically go back to their old identity from the early 2000s? It's odd, but it's basically what happened. Both of these bands are producing shows that look more like their bands from 20 years ago than five years ago, and I'm not just talking about quality. Their "identity" from those times have been born again. That was also the first year of Dobyns-Bennett's current stranglehold on the upper south, and the last year Scott Rush was the Wando director. Harrison made GN finals that year and Lassiter won a regional. Also, IIRC, this was the first year any of us non-Florida folks knew about Park Vista. Such a pivotal year for the southeast!

Yes! Very true. And now we are seeing Lafayette reborn it seems as well. There are lots of programs to watch in the south at the moment, James Madison, Carolina Forest, Mooresville to name a few. But it is so very hard to reach those finalist levels (as Ardrey Kell is figuring out) to reach a Bassett/ Byrnes level of design and quality. It’s always interesting!

It has been a long term project by a person involved with BOA to collect those scores. I am hopeful that they will get published at some point, perhaps for BOA's upcoming 50th anniversary. Essentially BOA (or MBA) as it was known prior to 1985 was not very effective at archiving those scores, many of them were handwritten back in those days. I believe they can not be released without BOA/MFA's permission. I actually have not seen the recap sheets prior to 1985. As far as I know, the finals recaps from the first Grand Nationals in 1976 are missing as are several of the regional recap sheets from 1980 and 1983. Those are likely gone forever. In fact, just trying to figure out who the Regional Champions were at some of those regionals was a challenge.
