Remind me, Buff. Was this when you were in band at Flushing? No, I was in Flushing from 1988 to 1991. I heard all about the 80 penalty though. It was a timing penalty, for having the drums play the band off the field. That was common in Michigan but not MBA. The penalty was only a part of the issue. The scores at the 1980 Grand Nationals were kind of a mess. I will dish more on that in the season reviews section.

I still find it crazy yet fascinating that they used to have summer championships for marching band! Ikr! band camp and summer rehearsals are bad enough. Add competitions, midwest heat, and more practice, and it would be miserable. I have a ton of respect for anyone that marched during summer in high school

Most of those bands at those 1980s summer nationals were from the midwest or western US. They were also held in June when the heat typically is not too bad in Wisconsin.
