I really like Hendricksonโs show. They can play. Although, Lots of visual dirt and underwhelming guard work. Hopefully that trumpet player that is horrendously out of the bubble gets fixed before semis! 10th-14th range for me. Seems to be losing some steam (no pun intended) by the end. This show is so darn fun though. I actually love it. Yeah visual is their big weakness, but I think the design and music will be enough to get them in. I love the concept too.

Springboro's "Now Boarding" naturally brings to mind Minnesota Brass's "Now Boarding" in 2016 with one of my favorite bits of narration:
"The oxygen is there to calm you as we plummet."

As the prelims come to an end, it is time to acknowledge once again how deep this field was. This was the first prelims I've been able to sit through since forever ago so I'm probably not the correct person to attest to any of this, but there are some many shows that would've been a straight lower top 22/next 8 lock 5 years ago. The quality of the activity just keeps climbing and climbing and there are so many terrific programs in corners of the country that are pushing the limits to new levels locally. I know with absolute certainty I'm speaking of the behalf of everyone by saying how blown away we are by how effective and healthy these programs are today.
There will be many programs in this competition that may not meet goals this year. This statement could not be any truer this year: the results do not reflect how far these shows and programs have developed. The future is bright in so many places of the country.

Alright pumpkins, I think I've got this all graphed out to my liking. I've got **SIXTY** -- 60 -- bands that I think attended counting on playing two shows, and gave performances today & yesterday that would probably garner a spot in Semis on most years, but this ain't a normal year. For sure the deepest Prelims show I've ever had the pleasure of watching.
I'm forgoing panel assignments, because I truly don't see any prelims results where they really matter much. I only mentioned when applicable as class reps.
I've also got everyone roughly in order of where I'd have them within each tier.
---------------------------
I've got 20 bands that I think are a lock for the "Middle 22" performance spots tomorrow:
Broken Arrow (OK) Carmel (IN) Avon (IN) Tarpon Springs (FL) William Mason (OH) Moe & Gene Johnson (TX) Dobyns-Bennett (TN) Fishers (IN) American Fork (UT) Castle (IN) O'Fallon Township (IL) Prosper (TX) Mustang (OK) Hendrickson (TX) Brownsburg (IN) Kiski Area (PA) Lincoln-Way Community (IL) Byrnes (SC) Jenison (MI) Grain Valley (MO)
------------------------------
I've got 4 locks for Semis that I'd be genuinely shocked to not hear their name called. Where they land in Semis is a little more up in the air.
Stoneman Douglas (FL) Rosemount (MN) Goshen (IN) Southlake Carroll (TX)
-----------------------------
Here's where it gets interesting! That's 24 bands that I think are locks for Semis. I've separated 11 more bands into what I think is the upper Semis bubble, and have the best shot at landing in Semis for those last 6 spots on my list:
Miamisburg (OH) (will either be in either on score or AA rep from panel 1) Homestead (IN) Lakota West (OH) Morton (IL) (AA rep from panel 1 if not in on score) Cleveland (NC) Marian Catholic (IL) Catawba Ridge (SC) Centerville (OH) Windemere (FL) Lakota East (OH) MPLT (IN) (edit: forgot Windemere!!)
-------------------------------
I've got another 10 groups in a lower bubble for Semis - I'd probably be more surprised if any of these made it in on score, but it is a TIGHT race, so none of them are out of the realm of possibility:
Beechwood (KY) (in regardless as A rep panel 2) Legacy (CO) Bourbon County (KY) (in regardless as A rep panel 1) Murray (KY) (in regardless as A rep panel 2) North Hardin (KY) Center Grove (IN) Sound & Spirit of Columbus (IN) Plymouth-Canton (MI) Green Level (NC) Ravenwood (TN)
-----------------------------
I've got another 16 STRONG groups who were just excellent and should all be scoring above a 75.00 (Div. 1), but I just don't realistically see a path for any of the them into Semifinals on score:
Deer Creek (OK) Reeths-Puffer (MI) Anderson County (KY) Milford (OH) Hardin Valley Academy (TN) Panther Creek (NC) Forest Hills Marching Band (OH) Campbell County (KY) Worthington Kilbourne (OH) DeWitt (MI) Lake Hamilton (AR) Bassett (VA) Greenfield-Central (IN) Desoto Central (MS) Archbishop Alter (OH) (will be in regardless as A rep panel 1) Greendale (WI)
This has been a truly incredible Prelims to watch. I've loved every minute!!!!

Well everyone, that wraps up our preliminary performances here. And as I am wrapping up my rankings, it's clear that I've goofed once again somewhere. Missing a couple bands despite catching everyone. Doing all of this yourself is tough (who knew right?). But in the broadest of senses, you'll get the idea of where most of the groups landed for me. Please forgive me on omissions as there was no malice behind it. The program closed during one of our breaks when I think wiped out a few of the bands when the program restarted. General disclaimer as always. Just my opinion. Just for fun. And no changes were made once something was locked in on my rankings and posted here other than additional contributions for new bans. And with that, let's have "Quick Thoughts, with Josh!" *tm*.
Hardin Valley Academy - Two years in a row I've been impressed by this group. And I love the childhood whimsy it brings to mind of a nice summer night catching them in our hands. Lake Hamilton - Just such a joy to watch that show live. So lively and full of energy. And a touching end. It was so fun to experience. Murray - They are not going to relinquish that Class Championship easily. Solid solid playing and a slaying of the dragon! They've certainly got beastly competition to slay and it could do the job. North Hardin - I still enjoy this show and have since Louisville. Yes, they aren't where they quite used to be, but I still felt the playing was strong along with the visuals. They very much have a good foundation to rebuild upon. Beechwood - Just missing a State Championship has put a fire in this group to close out the year. Such an incredibly well performed show that's easy to follow, but has good depth to challenge for the Class A Championship this year too. Summit - Where have you been hiding huh? That was a surprise performance of the block. Well done and I hope to see more of you soon! Hendrickson - Chug along with the band as they take you on a ride to Lucas Oil Stadium! It'll speed you right along with its quick pace, smooth rhythms, and high octane energy! This band wants a finals appearance and it is very much within their reach.
Overall Top 30 (in line with semi-finals) and First Band Out: 1. Avon - 2 2. Carmel - 2 3. Broken Arrow - 1 4. Tarpon Springs - 2 5. William Mason - 1 6. Dobyns-Bennett - 1 7. Fishers - 1 8. Moe & Gene Johnson - 1 9. American Fork - 1 10. Castle - 1 11. Prosper - 2 12. Kiski Area - 2 13. James F. Byrnes - 2 14. Brownsburg - 2 15. O'Fallon Township - 2 16. Hendrickson - 2 17. Lincoln-Way Community - 2 18. Stoneman-Douglas - 1 19. Homestead - 1 20. Catawba Ridge - 2 21. Goshen - 2 22. Rosemount - 1 23. Jenison - 2 24. Grain Valley - 1 25. Centerville - 1 26. Mustang - 1 27. Lakota East - 1 28. Southlake Carroll - 2 29. Morton - 1 30. Lake Hamilton - 2 FBO - Lakota West
Panel 1 Top 20 (Top 11 and then who I could see slipping on in) 1. Broken Arrow 2. William Mason 3. Dobyns-Bennett 4. Fishers 5. Moe & Gene Johnson 6. American Fork 7. Castle 8. Stoneman Douglas 9. Homestead 10. Rosemount 11. Grain Valley --------------------- 12. Centerville 13. Mustang 14. Lakota East 15. Morton 16. Lakota West 17. Worthington Kilbourne 18. Legacy 19. Miamisburg 20. Cleveland
Panel 2 Top 20 (Top 11 and then who I could see slipping on in) 1. Avon 2. Carmel 3. Tarpon Springs 4. Prosper 5. Kiski Area 6. James F. Byrnes 7. Brownsburg 8. O'Fallon Township 9. Hendrickson 10. Lincoln-Way Community 11. Catawba Ridge ---------------------------------- 12. Goshen 13. Jenison 14. Southlake Carroll 15. MPLT 16. Marian Catholic 17. Center Grove 18. Ravenwood 19. Milford 20. Columbus Schools
Again, I'm sure mistakes are plentiful. And maybe later I'll go back and figure out the remaining positions of what I've missed. But you get the idea! Congratulations to all of the outstanding bands that have traveled all this way to perform. Whether it is the last time, first time, or whatever, each show was one the members can be proud of and hopefully great memories were made.

Sure thing novicebanddad! And really, a lot of this comes with over 15 years of observing band as my name implies and I do not claim to be a judge or any sort. Just a massive band nerd that has learned what they generally are looking for. Sometimes, I'll be way off base so of course, take whatever I say with that grain of salt. If you thought that LW was better, there is nothing wrong with that. You are not wrong for liking what you like. If a show speaks to you, then that did its job. I stated in an earlier post regarding Bassett. An incredibly fun show that is well performed! But is not necessarily going to be scored very high perhaps. It's a precarious balancing act at times which is why you'll see a lot of dissent in the forums on what shows "should" and "should not" look like. But in regards to these two shows in particular without going into too much of the weeds, I felt that LE had more 'artistic' flow to the show. More musical contrast showing the range of the performers. And as music is more heavily weighted, felt they had the stronger musical performance. But as I also said, I have a weak spot of dark shows and LW has that in spades for me. These two groups have continued to be neck and neck and rarely face each other in contests so it's great to really have a small gauge between them. School pride and bragging rights on the line in their friendly contest with each other. I would not be surprised to see LW ahead. Both gave it their all and each can walk away from there performances proud! Marching Observer, really appreciate your response and thoughts. I hope we get a chance to hear them both again to see if I catch on to what you're hearing in regards to the difference in their musical performance.

Although the texas contingent is smaller this year, the fight for semis and finals is so wide!
Just as many of us have been saying for months the race to finals has many bands and roughly 6 spots available. But all those shows have great strengths and different weakness. It will be interesting to see what the judges reward.

It will be interesting to see what the judges reward. Right? It totally comes down to who has the best run tomorrow/what the judges are looking for specifically. Going to be tight, and honestly prelims didn't help narrow the field/rule many groups out. If anything, it made the bubble a bit bigger. Not to mention the bubble for semis is insane. Fun year!

Well now. Here, at the moment, is how I think I would rank the past two days' shows. The list most definitely takes into account my own preferences and is by no means a prediction. I assigned a score after each performance, then put them in order by score over the past hour, then wondered what on earth I was thinking in a bunch of cases and made a few adjustments, but there's no time to rethink them all now.
