ISSMA new calendar up. Semi-State 10/26, State Finals November 9. So the possible dates for Indy Super next year are no later than 10/18-19, based on availability of LOS. Which will run smack dab into at least Illinois State (probably October 19?) and maybe U of I (god knows when that'll be, as the Big Ten attempts to add every school known to man.) Guess everyone will be going to St. Louis again, which, ick.

Agreed Lawrence is too low. This is CG huge comeback season feel it in my bones. Doing 3 performances in a day got to extremely tiring. I wouldn't be surprised if Williams Mason advance or many of the other bands trying to place top half against Brownsburg, Castle, and Fishers, Avon and Carmel. Most of the Indiana bands in question will have Friday prelims performance times in the Super Regional. I think a number of good bands that are competing in the non-AAAA and trying to make finalist spots category will begin to question the wisdom of performing on Friday while giving up practice time instead of focusing just on semi-state Saturday. If you are Jasper, do you really want to perform at 1:30 Friday afternoon and then perform Saturday at 5 pm in Semi-state? Are you going to go home or find a place to stay? How about practice, and feeding kids? What if the weather is bad? Do you really want to take a chance that you miss state for a competition that means little in the scheme of things?

Differing viewpoints are fine. I have been known to have strong opinions that are in the minority when compared to the consensus. It becomes trolling when it is repetitive posting in a way to bait people. You apparently don't understand the term elitist as well. I am really just an ass. PS. You couldn’t say anything on this forum to make me not like you Paddy. I know we all come from differing and competing camps but truth is we all have more in common than our differing opinions. #bandnerdsforlife It is never about like/dislike... And I like the profile pic. I saw that exact same view after the DCI show and it didn't even register that I should take a pic. Such a cool tableau.

I’ve seen several day shots from the Tower of America park area but this night shot really spoke to me! It’s actually really close to my betters half favorite restaurant in the French quarters. I hope you didn’t eat at that Denny’s by the Arena. Lol. Any visitors to the Alamodome please DM me and I’ll take you or suggest local cuisine hot spots that are not tourist prices ✅

Although this summer has been unusually hot so I get it. TBH that is why I visited Oklahoma momentarily and I’m now in Florida Sarasota area bothering our kids. lol We live in the SA/ Austin (Canyon Lake) hill country area and so inner city concrete heat usually doesn’t affect us much. If you ever make your way down again I’d suggest a visit to Gruene and Fredrickburg (SA surroundings areas). These are Old German towns with amazing cuisine and fantastic wine country tours. All reasonable In price

Anyone want to come up with some spicy finals predictions so we can talk about something actually interesting now In all seriousness, if you want some actual spicy predictions: - William Mason stuns onlookers, and edges out Avon & Carmel. - Lincoln & Bixby dominate Class AAA and both make the Top Half of finals. - Following their Grand National Finals appearance, both Fishers & Brownsburg surprisingly underwhelm. - Lafayette sneaks into finals ahead of Union & Yukon. - Imbalanced Panels will leave 2 very good bands on the outside looking in for finals (this is the only one I'm remotely confident might happen)

We need a Lincoln sweep in the Land of Lincoln! There was discussion of a Champaign regional in like 2018. I'd love to see it again, but I don't know how much interest there'd be. U of I would be the obvious selection, but then you're dealing with the Big Ten schedule, which seems to change 10 times a year. ISU/NIU would be options 2 and 3, and then EIU. WIU and SIU would probably be out.

WHATT! "Weak" and "Texas" don't mix! Now you better take that back! I know for a matter of fact that the last placed band in SASR could beat Carmel in music, and the 400 band in each state. Just wait until we move the whole state of TX into LOS; none of your cute baby visuals can compete with Texas's sound. Grrrr.

Gaines visual requirements from Carmel are hardly “cute” rather cutting edge. The issue is a broad consensus of BOA judges and fans over rewarding legacy or legacy type visuals and calling it GE (That’s has been the contention even amongst MFA midwesterners for a few decades BTw). Broken Arrow, Tarpon and almost all Texas Elites not only bring clean visuals (traditional sometimes) but they bring innovation in terms of music demand and design. BOA rewards innovation and demand in visual only (look at GN’s22 as an example). Aside from BA and Tarpon no one in finals had any music demand!!? If adjudication Is and should be divided equally between visual and music (GE, Music and Visual) then why do we see programs that sound like Texas junior high schools scoring final level at any BOA circuits? IE anything Indiana. My personal contempt is the overly Midwest prideful consensus like “can’t wait for Hebron to come to Indy and outplay everyone yet go home without the Eagle” type pride. I mean we all know visual is king for BOA. That doesn’t make Carmel or Avon is superior (maybe Gaines genius is) to BA, Tarpon or the Texas Elites because your preferred circuit deems so. The 7 -9 Midwest pro profiles that seem to stick together on this forum do not represent the over all marching band concedes in the country.

Part of competition is bringing a product that ticks as many of the boxes as possible to attain the highest score.
And it isn’t like the great Midwest bands are getting destroyed in music scores in BOA events.

And it isn’t like the great Midwest bands are getting destroyed in music scores in BOA events. Again when you have a BOA music adjudication sheets use subjective languages like “how does the student feel while playing or does the crowd sense what the individual musician is tying to present” then the score is less objective. iE Tuning, intonation or demand differences. Carmel scored off the charts in ME last year yet would you really think that they would have sounded as clean if they had demanded a book like Hebron or most of the finalist at SASR? Could they have handled a book like BA or Tarpon? We all know the answer yet I will hear every excuse I’m the contrary

I lifted this straight from the 2023 Adjudication Manual. It literally says none of what you intimate. I’m happy to discuss something, but if we aren’t using the facts then it is an unproductive exercise.
Section 8: Scoresheet Explanation – Music Performance Individual The job of the Field Performance judge is to evaluate the Performance accuracy, tone quality and intonation and the realized musical demand placed on the performers. This judge must move around on the field through the ensemble to sample all individuals in all segments of the instrument ensemble throughout the Performance. This judge must not stay on the sideline. While the ensemble execution judge must strive to adjudicate the majority of the ensemble the majority of the time, the Individual Performance judge is not concerned with ensemble factors except as may be obviated through his chance positioning. The effectiveness of the production is not to be considered. Care must be taken not to intimidate performing members through gestures or unnecessary physical proximity. The percussion section is a responsibility of all judges in this caption and requires specific attention. It will be necessary to sample the section throughout the program with specific attention during any drum section solos. We must understand from the outset that what we are doing is sampling of individuals within the ensemble. It is possible that we may inadvertently position ourselves in the problem areas of the ensemble consistently through a performance or in all the right spots where we would not be aware of problems. We must be alert enough to search through the ensemble to be sure that our impression is truly representative of the group’s ability as presented in that performance. Imperative is the necessity to avoid following or zeroing in on a few problem individuals if they are truly not representational. We as adjudicators must give attention to each of the three choirs, (woodwind, percussion, and brass) in approximate relative proportions as represented by their relative numbers of performers. A balanced evaluation will necessitate seeking out woodwind, brass and percussion contribution when they are not physically and musically prominent. It is very possible that a band may have an excellent woodwind section, average brass section, and poor percussion section. The score should reflect an average of the relative proficiency of each choir. Understand that it is possible for a band that may carry a general impression of being very good to have a choir that is really quite average or below and should be scored appropriately.
Section 9: Scoresheet Explanation – Music Performance Ensemble 9.01 The purpose of evaluation on this sheet is to determine the best, second best, etc., musical performance based on accuracy and uniformity of performance as perceived from the vantage point of the audience. The judgment of technical accuracy, intonation accuracy, and tone quality is to be made with the consideration of content—that is, demand and exposure of the performers. The effectiveness of the production is not to be considered. The vantage point of the Music Performance Ensemble judge is such that it would be relatively easy to slip into an effect mode as a judge. We must take great care that we react as an analyst while judging Music Performance Ensemble. We want to judge how well the performers do what it is they are doing and to make an estimation, a judgment, as to what it is they are attempting to do from this vantage point; not how effective what they are doing is to the audience. The Music Performance Ensemble Judge will position him/herself in such a position so as to judge the full ensemble musically. Depending upon the stadium, this may be in the press box, on top of the press box, or at the top of the stands. The judge must be in a position to be able to hear the entire musical ensemble clearly. Therefore, the judge must not be positioned behind closed windows or in a contained space that would make listening to a full ensemble very difficult. The adjudicator, once having started in a position must complete the entire contest in that position, i.e., if the adjudicator starts inside the press box, he must remain there for the duration of the contest, or that portion of the contest. The percussion section is a responsibility of all judges in this caption and requires specific attention. It will be necessary to sample the section throughout the program with specific attention during any drum section solos. 9.02 The Overall Sound Quality/Accuracy sub-caption evaluates how closely the ensemble has achieved proper tone production. It is the result obtained when the three major aspects of intonation, focus, and timbre are properly utilized by segments contributing to the sonority of the total ensemble. Consideration is also given to the appropriate dynamic contribution of the sections, choirs, and voices to the total ensemble. Accuracy credits the excellence with which the entire ensemble controls the accuracy and cohesiveness of the musical Performance. Consideration is given to the clarity and correctness of rhythmic interpretation as well as the control of ensemble pulse and tempo. In addition, are the instrumentalists utilizing the proper method of enunciation relative to style and pedagogy? 9.03 The Musical Artistry sub-caption evaluates the overall achievement of the musical ensemble relative to musicality. Consideration is given for the level of musical achievement displayed through appropriate demonstration of expressions, dynamics, phrasing and correct idiomatic interpretation. The art involved in displaying musicality requires aesthetic sensitivity and a deep understanding of the idioms involved.
