Shadow Ridge H.S., NV has been added to the participants list. How does their marching band typically do? I’m not familiar with them. They opened in 2002. I can't find any year they competed in BOA, so they could be newcomers in the BOA field. In the new Nevada Marching Band Circuit, they placed 5th out of 7 bands in the 2022 NMBC Class 2A Championships unfortunately not enough to make finals however they were also 1 point above Desert Pines, NV who competed in BOA Utah in 2022 who placed (29th out of 31th). Class AA: 73.250: Sierra Vista, NV ( Best M and GE) 70.375: Liberty, NV ( Best Visual) 69.000: Coronado, NV 64.950: Centennial, NV 64.300: Shadow Ridge, NV63.300: Desert Pines, NV ( BOA St. George) 59.750: Basic Academy, NV PreCOVID timesIn most MBOS competition they weren't able to make finals or placed lower in their class like: (MBOS) Las Vegas Invitational PrelimsNov. 7, 2015 Onyx Class: 79.78: West Ranch, CA * Made Finals 73.75: Ed. No Shadow Ridge H.S., NV. Strange that they would be added on the participating bands list just before schedule is available without their inclusion. The only explanation would be that the participants lists include the statement "This list includes bands that have scheduled performance times, as well as those on the waitlist."

Of all the wildcards this season I think Fort Mill might be the wildest of them all. They have decisively won the 4 local shows they have attended by large enough margins that really gathering anything from the results is inconclusive IMO. Not to mention some of those sheets are dramatically different from BOA. They did defeat River Bluff yesterday at the Providence cup and they're doing Cedar Park's show from last year and doing quite well with it.
This is a much larger Fort Mill than the previous two years, so it seems they started their competitive season later (Oct. 7) maybe to mitigate that. With this slow entry into competition, they have rewritten many things. They are playing Grand Canyon Fanfare as the closing movement and at 4 different shows I have heard 4 different variations. Percussion has been 2nd at every show except for Gaffney and Guard has been 2nd at every show in SC.
But as far as competitively here at St. George I really have no idea. They could be 4th again or they could be 10th. They do not have the aggressive percussion or guard sections many of the out west bands do, nor the powerful high brass perhaps. The tonality of Fort Mill seems odd this year. It's more concert like but soft at times when you'd think they would be much louder. Almost Wando 2015-esque when they were purposefully turning the band down in volume.

I got to go to a local Utah competition recently so I feel like I can make some informed predictions for the Utah bands! Not including anyone else because I have no idea.
1. American Fork. I love their program this year. If you can't check this show out live, there is currently a pretty good recording on YouTube right now, and I urge you to check it out. They have some great soloists, the visual design is great with the props, and the show has a ton of energy and is overall super fun. The third movement is the highlight, it completely brings the house down. No idea how well this show would have faired at nationals, but it's definitely not a step back at all. I may have alumni bias, but this is a great production. 2. Westlake. Westlake has a big band this year and they're taking full advantage. The show has a fantastic visual design and really pops on the field. Lot of great moments throughout and it has a very fun theme. I don't think I'm experienced enough to say this show would make it to semifinals in Grand Nationals, but I absolutely think it would have a great chance to score quite highly. 3. Green Canyon. Haven't actually seen this show, but they've been scoring high and I think this is the year they get that elusive podium finish. 4. Skyridge: Everything past here is basically guesswork mixed with personal opinion. Skyridge has a Queen themed show this year and they play it very well. I'm gonna say this for every Utah band, but almost all the show designs are really good and look great on the field. Having a four piece band (bass, drumset, synth, soloist) in front the pit is a great idea and totally works for the show. Overall I think Skyridge will do pretty well, and has a good chance at top 6. 5. Davis: Davis keeps up the more modern show design after the success of last year with their show, "Here's Looking At You Kid". That's pretty much all you need to know about the show, it's fun visually and has some great solos. It's not my personal favorite, but I would not be surprised to see them get podium again. 6. Farmington: I think it would be fair to say that Farmington was a bit disappointing last year. They've turned it around. Great visual design with some cool light up props (a Farmington staple) and some great music selections. Again, would not be surprised if they podium this year. 7. Cedar Valley: I just don't love Cedar Valley's show design this year that much, but this is a way more personal take than objective. Truth is Cedar Valley is on the up and coming and I have no doubt they will continue to do so. The local comp results between all of theses 6AO bands have been razor thin, and Cedar Valley has the talent, staff, and resources to continue to make noise here. 8. Herriman. Haven't seen their show. Should be competing for a finals spot. 9. Lehi. Lehi has a Clue themed show this year which is a lot of fun. They should do well here, I just don't know how well compared to the out of state bands.
That's all the predictions I'll do for this comp, but I'd like to give a special shoutout to Copper Hills, Fremont, Mountain Ridge, and Pleasant Grove for having great shows as well, all of which have their highlights and fun moments. Also shoutout to every other Utah band making the trip down that I haven't seen yet. My final shoutout before ending this very longwinded and inconsequential post is to a non-attending band Riverton, whos show (entitled "Starcrossed") about two families of crocodiles and flamingos feuding. That show left a smile on my face the entire way through.
I wish every competing performer, staff member, and band best of luck on their runs!

I think the ceiling of this show is certainly higher than last year, it flows better (no pun intended.) And visually they look sharp.

Ik scores say otherwise because they were in a different division, but I’d keep my eye on Maple Mountain this year. They’ve been placing 2nd to Green Canyon consistently, even if there is a little bit of a gap. There was even one comp where they were only 2 points behind. I think you guys can tell what band I’m in 😂

Final predictions!
This is going to be an exciting contest. So many out-of-state visitors coming and shaking up expectations! Much of these are just shots in the dark. My first few bands out of finals in placement order are Lehi, Maple Mountain and Lakewood, and I could see any of these bands sneaking into finals. The race for 2nd and 3rd in Class AAA is going to be SUPER tight, and both Lakewood and Maple Mountain have later performance slots to their advantage.
Best of skill to all performing groups!
1. American Fork H.S., UT 2. Westlake H.S., UT 3. Green Canyon H.S., UT 4. Davis H.S., UT 5. Fort Mill H.S., SC 6. Farmington H.S., UT 7. Skyridge H.S., UT 8. Cedar Valley H.S., UT 9. Buchanan H.S., CA 10. Herriman H.S., UT 11. Etiwanda H.S., CA 12. Rancho Cucamonga H.S., CA
A 1. Pinecrest Academy of Nevada Cadence, NV
AA 1. Green Canyon H.S., UT 2. Ogden H.S., UT 3. Sky View H.S., UT
AAA 1. Fort Mill H.S., SC 2. Maple Mountain H.S., UT 3. Lakewood H.S., CO

They have faced no serious competition this marching season. Defeating River Bluff is nothing to boast about or base how they will fare at this regional. I watched their a video of their show from Mooresville and I hope they have cleaned up since then. I cannot venture a guess where FM will place at this contest but from reading up on some other bands, I would say that 5th place would be their ceiling.

I saw Lakewood at the Legacy marching contest in September, they definitely stood out. Their visual design felt very Wes cartwright to me, although I am not sure he works with bands that small. But I liked the show a lot and they did fine in the Colorado state circuit. I'd say likely in finals but definitely one of the last spots if at all.

You know what, I believe Fort Mill is winning all captions and beating American Fork by 2 points.
Really though, I hope they do well. Top half is absolutely achievable, and a AAA title is likely. There are so many good Utah groups that all seem capable of medaling behind AF, so this should be a fun show

Also Maple Mountain might be AAAA this year. That’s what our directors have told us at least. Thanks for the heads up! It seems unlikely, as the Utah State Board of Education has the number at 1,735 enrolled in Grades 10-12, but CompSuite has usually been updated on the Wednesday or Thursday before a contest so if they update Maple Mountain’s info we will know for sure soon!
