Marching contest season is almost upon us! I figured I would create an Oklahoma thread like we had last year, soooo...
This is the official thread for Oklahoma marching band competition results, discussion, predictions, and more!
Looking forward to a great season of Oklahoma band!

I’m excited for the upcoming season! Now if only it would cool down enough for the kids to be allowed to have an outdoor after school rehearsal!!!

I know we're getting close to comp season when this thread pops up! Super excited for this season as this will be the last one with myself or a family member in the band, so I'll be watching this one extra closely!

Hi everyone! Like last year, here is the 2023 Oklahoma marching band breakdown nobody asked for! I am supeeerrrrr excited to get things rolling and have a great season of band. One of my favorite things about marching band, whether it be OBA, BOA, or even local contests, is that results can change so drastically from year to year and even from contest to contest. It really makes things fun as a spectator, and I think it motivates the students to continually push through the season. If there is one thing for certain, we will see things we didn't expect, and if this year is anything like last year, the level of achievement in Oklahoma will just continue to rise. The firm line between the Tulsa powerhouse bands and the ever improving OKC bands will continue to blur. Some bands will surprisingly make finals while others will surprisingly not. We have a really solid list of bands competing at BOA competitions this year despite not having ANY compete at Grand Nationals. All this to say, it is going to be one HECK of a year for band. As a side note, I am a big believer in the power of positive reinforcement. I do my best to make my comments as positive/productive as possible while also giving my honest opinions on things. I am not afraid to call out mistakes, but I think it is more important to emphasize the good, because ultimately these kids are putting in SO much time and working SO hard to put on a good show. I am impressed by every band, small and large, because I know there is so much that goes into that short performance. So hopefully these forums can be a place of joy and positivity this season to build the students up rather than tear them down. Sorry, I got on my soapbox there, but I didn't know where else to put it. Regardless, back to the fun stuff. Oklahoma Bands competing in BOA by competition:Midland Regional Mustang H.S., OK
Flagstaff Regional Sapulpa H.S., OK
Bedford Regional Jenks H.S., OK
Prosper Regional Mustang H.S., OK (maybe)
Indianapolis Super Regional Bixby H.S., OK Choctaw H.S., OK Deer Creek H.S., OK Southmoore H.S., OK Union H.S., OK Yukon H.S., OK
Orlando Regional Broken Arrow H.S., OK Owasso H.S., OK
St. Louis Super Regional Collinsville H.S., OK
That is 12 different bands from Oklahoma competing in the BOA circuit this year! Despite it being a weird shuffling of bands at contests they might not usually attend, it is going to be a fun year nonetheless. It's also neat because we will get to see them compete against bands they don't often get to compete against. I am excited to see how it all shakes out. Another side note: since we have no Oklahoma bands to cheer along at GN this year, I am personally jumping on the Bentonville train since they are quite literally the same distance from me in Tulsa than some of the OKC bands are. I will, of course, be rooting on every band, but Bentonville is going to be my substitute- "Oklahoma region" band. Also very excited to support Lake Hamilton and of course the impressive Texas bands in attendance this year. Okay, enough of that. Back to your regularly scheduled programming. Next, I am going to give some commentary on some bands of interest until I get tired and stop. Broken Arrow - A bit of a slower year for BA, with just one BOA regional appearance. I am excited as always to see what they produce and how this season goes for them. I noticed their numbers seem slightly down from what they usually are, so I wonder if that was a design choice or if they are just a bit on the smaller side this year (and by the way, their "smaller" is still very very big). Either way, very excited for BA this year as I am a huge fan and live less than 10 minutes from BAHS. Plus, as they are only attending the one regional... maybe they will make some appearances at some local comps? Jenks - Not sure why, but Bolero marching shows are some of my favorites. I am really excited for Jenks this year, and I think they are going to hold their own very well down in Texas. Will they keep 2nd place at OBA? Will they possibly make BA sweat? Will they build off last year's incredible season? I think yes! Mustang - I am an unapologetic Mustang stan, and I am really excited for this year's show. I feel like it has the potential to have that classic Mustang campiness while also being a great building block moving into Mustang's next big BOA year. They are the only Oklahoma band attending 2 regionals, and even they might even be dropping the Prosper one (fingers crossed they don't). I heard a rumor they are stuggling a bit financially after last year, so here's to hoping that gets sorted out if it's true! Regardless, I have no doubt Mustang is going to put on a SHOW. It will also be nice to see them at some local contests this year! Bixby - AHHHH I am so excited for Bixby. They impress me every year, and I don't think there is another band in the state with the same trajectory of growth seen with this group (although there are a lot that I think will be there very soon). I think this might be the year where Bixby REALLY shows what they are made of at the national level. Heck, I am hoping they make BA sweat some too. And their show theme seems pretty freaking cool. Excited for this one like a lot! Owasso - Owasso is so consistently great, so I am ready to see them as well. These students can PLAY, and I think it is really cool that we will get to see them in Orlando this year. I think there could be medal potential there, but we will see how the first few contests go! Edmond Santa Fe - ESF used to be the underdog I loved to root for...now they aren't really an underdog, but I still LOVE to root for them. I saw a video of Project X, and they have once again stepped up their game. It will be tough breaking into that top 5 at OBA, but I think there is a solid chance that they do. Impressed is an understatement. Southmoore - I am so happy that they are making another BOA appearance this year. It gives me hope that this will become a consistent thing for them! They really had a breakout year last season, so of course I am really REALLY excited to see what they bring to the table this go around. Union - Union is still in their regrowth phase, but that doesn't mean they aren't incredible. If there is one group we have learned not to doubt, it is Union. The Indy Super Regional lineup is stacked this year, but I am not counting them out. Really hoping for a great season from them! Yukon - Another 2022 breakout group, I think they have a lot of momentum coming into this season! I saw a video of their music, and danngggg they sound good. I think they are going to turn some heads this season. Deer Creek - Deer Creek is a band that I believe is going to become a household name in the next few years. I know there were some director turnovers this year, but I am really pumped to see how they do this year. I am very much rooting them on! Choctaw - Choctaw looks great this year, and I think they might be a dark horse at the Indy Super Regional. They are hungry to get back into OBA finals too, so this should be a really successful season for them. Coweta - Coweta isn't going to any BOA events this year, but I believe they are now a Wes band. With that being said, I think they will only improve off a great season last year. Collinsville - They are GOOOOD. Our only representation at the St. Louis Super, I am really going to be cheering them on. Edmond North - Another band with a video out there, they are fighting hard for one of those last finals spots at OBA this year. I doubted them last year, and they proved me wrong. This year, I won't make the same mistake. I am impressed with what I am seeing, so hopefully they keep up the good work! Edmond Memorial - It is going to be very interesting to see how this group performs this year. Director changes are tough, but sometimes for the better. Might be a very different Edmond Memorial this year, but maybe that's a good thing? Only time will tell. Sapulpa - They are going to BOA!! I am pumped, because last season was so good for them. I expect more growth and honestly, I think we very well might see them in finals at BOA. Not to mention they are vying HARD for that state championship. Really exciting stuff to see. Piedmont - Last but not least, we have Piedmont. Another band victim to director change, it will be really interesting to see how things change. They got a really seasoned new director, so I think this could be the start of something really good for Piedmont. I am really ready to see what they bring! Well there you have it! I will be posting a lot as we see new videos and my thoughts on things change, but there is a not-so-quick preseason analysis for you. It is going to be such a fun year! Also, let's try to get more Okies onto this forum to spice up the conversation some! I love seeing everyone's thoughts and opinions, so the more the merrier! If you made it this far, thanks! Let's make this a season to remember.

They got a really seasoned new director, so I think this could be the start of something really good for Piedmont. I am really ready to see what they bring! I'm going to piggyback and add on to this part specifically. I personally am much more excited for this change than I was with their change last year. This is more than likely Piedmont's last year in 5A as their OSSAA numbers have officially hit 6A status, and if there's anybody out there who knows a thing or two about making 6A OBA finals, it's Jahnke. It's gonna be crucial for them to find that success once they've aligned with the big dogs (not that they didn't march on par with them for a long time, but everyone across the board has gotten much more competitive). I won't go into too much detail, but I've seen some snippets of what's on the field so far, and he's going to have them playing GOOD. I truly hope he's one they keep. On another note, looking at that list of BOA attendees has me super hyped! If there's anything BA and the rest of the Tulsa contingent have inspired, it's the incentive for other bands in the state to pursue BOA and that caliber of show, and I think it's been very beneficial! I can't wait to have more OK representation on the national level (even if there's no Oklahoma bands at Nats this year lol). I'm especially excited to see how the Oklahoma Invasion will impact Indy results. Lots of finalist level bands will most definitely be sent packing after prelims. Also hyped for BA and Owasso at Orlando and Mustang at Midland! Having watched that contest live last year, I'm very excited for them to throw down down there.

Yes, Coweta is a Wes band this year. The kids were hit hard last year when they lost their previous band directors, they had a lot of changes that they were not ready for. This year I hope that they will continue to gain confidence.

Years prior Mrs. Koehn would write the show, last year it was written by someone else - not sure who.

So following this Friday's set of performances, here are some of my thoughts:
Mustang is HOT this year. They have so much of their show on the field already, and it looks pretty good. I couldn't find a good video of their sound, but the Southmoore broadcast of their game showed their whole performance (only from the visitor side). Even from that angle, they sounded LOUD and they looked great. I am super excited to see how they progress this season.
Deer Creek also really impressed me. They continue to grow and I think they are absolutely in the bubble conversation for the Indy Super Regional finals. I also consider them solidly in OBA finals, but we have a long season to go before then.
Yukon sounded great! Visually, definitely some dirt, but that was also their issue last year. We saw through the season that they were able to clean it up so I am optimistic that the story will be the same this year.
Bixby has such an interesting show! I like it a lot, but it is definitely a Bixby show. They are so good at innovation. I hope it translates to the BOA sheets well, but I am not sure if it will. I think as the season progresses, they add more show, and iron out the wrinkles, we will get a better idea of how this show is going to perform. But still, soooo sooo good!
Couldn't hear Owasso but they looked pretty solid. Excited to see how their season goes.
Bentonville (not an Okie band, but close enough) is on fire! They have such a fun show, and I think it has the potential to be really really something special.

I think this might finally be the year where we see them turn the tide and really start coming back into the spotlight, which makes me soooo happy to say. Visually they had some neat stuff going on, and I thought their sound was very well done! Hoping for a great season from RR.

Thanks for sharing the mustang tidbit! I had only seen the home view.
Owasso looked good, but wish we had heard them. Darn commentators! 😂
Those Bixby camera shots, yikes! But the guitar got some nice airtime hah. Also, that mic had to be right in front of a speaker 🙈
Union’s drill looks beautiful. Already cleaned up a good amount from when I saw them at their preview show a couple weeks ago. They have a very powerful low brass for such a young group!
It’s going to be another exciting season!

All righty! I know I’m late to the party but I’m finally going to report on Yukon form their last football game.
Overall this is the best sounding Yukon I’ve ever heard! They’re starting to develop a really solid foundation musically, something that I think will pay dividends later in the season. I noticed they had props out but I don’t believe those are the final placement for them, I’ve heard rumors about them bringing on new prop crew kids very recently so it’s possible they just haven’t learned their drill yet.
I think at a visual level Yukon needs to spend some serious time in the shed, they do have a good chunk of their show on the field, 4 minutes I’d assume is about half of their show, and they didn’t use a met, but I do think that’s going to be the biggest thorn in the side of Yukon this year. From what I can see their individual technique has greatly improved from where it was even at OBA last year, I think that bodes well for the rest of the season!
Overall I think they’ve got a fabulous show! I’ve heard they share a show designer with the Mandarins DBC and based on that show, Yukon is gonna have something special this year! Can’t wait to see them perform again at the Yukon Invitational!

They only knew 3 sets as of Friday night since they just started attending ensemble rehearsals this week. We also only had the 3 props completely finished, with lights, but they completed 4 more this morning so only 3 left. Those props will move A LOT! It’s a fairly new development, as in, early August, where they decided to use 8th graders for props. We will have 220 students which is quite a few more than the last few years. We also have a huge freshman class comparatively. We graduated 35 seniors in the spring and gained 65 freshman. All in all it’s a very young group on the field, but musically, I agree, they are much stronger than they have been. Our team of directors is brilliant and are doing amazing things with our kids. Becca Anderson is our designer and yes, she is the Mandarins designer. She is actually coming to town tonight to help us out this week! Very exciting stuff.

I am excited to see it with the props! I was wondering if those lights were some of the props, and I am happy to hear they are! I bet they will be very impactful once complete and integrated into the drill. Yay Yukon!
