A recap of the 2023 OMEA local contest season:
57 OMEA adjudicated events were held, with 2 additional events (Akron, River View) being cancelled for various reasons. 4 additional OMEA State Finals events will be held at 3 schools over the next two weekends.
181 bands competed in OMEA this year. Of these, 174 were from Ohio, 4 were from West Virginia, 2 were from Kentucky, and 1 was from Indiana. 18 bands were showcased at OMEA shows in purely exhibition performances. Of these, 17 were from Ohio and 1 was from Georgia. 2 of these bands attended more than one OMEA event (Pickerington North with 2 and Westerville Central with 2, 3 if not for the River View show being rained out). 1 additional band, Danbury, was originally scheduled to attend 2 OMEA events before pulling out of the Copley show. I'd love to see some of these bands make the competitive leap someday (or return to competing, in the cases of Elgin, Lima Shawnee, Pickerington North, Watkins Memorial, and Westerville Central).
The average number of competitions attended for a band was 3.64. The median was 4, the minimum was 1 (Boyle County (KY), Chesterton (IN), Chippewa, Field, Lakota East, Miamisburg, Northmont, Northwest (Canal Fulton), Perry, Ravenswood (WV), Russell (KY), Vandalia-Butler, Westerville North, and Williamstown (WV)), and the maximum was 7 (Point Pleasant (WV)). The band that attended the most competitions before qualifying was Fort Recovery, who finally did it on the 6th attempt. The bands who attended the most competitions without qualifying at all were Adena, Fairbanks, Marion Local, Minford, Northeastern, Norwood, Shenandoah, Tecumseh, and Westfall, each with 5. Fort Frye would also have gotten to 5 if the River View show had not been rained out.
49/51 class AA bands qualified for state (96.1%). 5/49 (10.2%) chose not to attend state finals, 1 of which is an out of state band. This means 44 class AA bands will be attending state finals. 33/42 class A bands qualified for state (78.6%). 5/33 (15.2%) chose not to attend state finals, 4 of which are out of state bands. This means 28 class A bands will be attending state finals. 32/47 class B bands qualified for state (68.1%). All 32 are attending state finals. 18/41 class C bands qualified for state (43.9%). All 18 are attending state finals.
The show with the highest percentage of superior ratings given was Thomas Worthington, where 9/10 (90%) bands received superior ratings on October 21. The lowest percentage occurred at Troy on September 9, where none of the 6 bands received superior ratings.
The largest show this season was at Ohio State on October 14, with 30 bands in competition and 13 in exhibition. The smallest was at Northwestern on September 30, with 4 bands in competition.
The bands with the most Grand Champion awards this season were Berne Union (Licking Heights 9/9, Watkins Memorial 9/30, Columbus Grove 9/30, and Nelsonville-York 10/21) and Grove City (Teays Valley 10/7, Maysville 10/14, Newark 10/21, and New Philadelphia 10/21), each with 4. Dublin Coffman was close behind, with 3 (Grove City 9/30, Ohio State 10/14, and Lancaster 10/21).
Chesterton (IN), Dublin Coffman, Grove City, Lakota East, Loveland, Perry, Russell (KY), and Springboro went undefeated in OMEA this season. Amherst Steele, Beavercreek, and Kings were close, each losing to one band (Louisville, Dublin Coffman, and Lakota East, respectively).
The highest score achieved at a show this year was a 96.45 by Grove City at New Philadelphia on 10/21. The highest score achieved by a class A band was a 92.46 by Louisville at New Philadelphia on 10/21. The highest score achieved by a class B band was an 88.1 by Bloom-Carroll at Meadowbrook on 10/14. The highest score achieved by a class C band was an 85.8 by Dawson-Bryant at Ironton on 10/21. 20 known scores over 90 were achieved (Amherst Steele, Beavercreek, Berne Union, Central Crossing, Chesterton (IN), Dublin Coffman (x3), Dublin Jerome (x2), Grove City (x3), Hilliard Darby, Hoover, Kings, Lakota East, Licking Heights, and Louisville (x2)).
The smallest school to qualify for state this year seems to be Kalida, with 105 students in grades 10-12. The largest, Mentor, boasts 2007 students in the same grades.
One school made their competitive debut this season: Northwest (Canal Fulton). Four others made a return after several years without competing: Chippewa, Claymont, Field, and River Valley (Bidwell). Welcome back!
Two schools qualified for OMEA State Finals for the first time this season: Crooksville and Sylvania Southview. Best of luck!!

Results from OMEA Brunswick: What was up with Brunswick's announcer? Fifteen competing bands, fifteen different versions of the word "adjudicated." So much struggling with directors' and kids' names and even with regular words. North Royalton's repertoire was announced as included something called "In Trumpet." That sounded weird -- and the band's fourth number didn't feature any more trumpet than the rest of the show -- but my program was tucked away to keep it dry in the rain, so I couldn't check. Afterwards, some Royalton parents told me the song's title is "Intrepid." And don't get me started on how he put "the" in front of the name of every band's director. Even Brunswick! "Let's give one more show of support for the Ethan Eraybar and the Brunswick High School Marching Band." Actually the folks around me cheered at that one, because if you've got a gimmick, you might as well play it through to the end.

I didn't want to say it because I was being nice but it seems you are less nice than I am! Poor guy couldn't say... anything. Anything at all. None of the words. Most of the bands took the field for OMEA Educated Performance, even the festival bands. He also capped it off with the worst pronunciation of Amherst's director's surname I've heard in my 9 seasons with the band. It's not an easy job, but you do have to know how to say all the words that aren't names of people or more complicated/foreign language song titles. My favorite instance was the electric bass soloist, in which case bass was pronounced like the fish.

Congratulations to three great bands representing Ohio well at the BOA Super Regional in Indy. Centerville finished 11 Lakota West finished 10 Mason finished 3 Great results from a packed and highly competitive field of over 60 bands. That is excellent. I think Beavercreek and Kettering Fairmont acquitted themselves well in the Indy Prelims, too. And down in Orlando, Archbishop Alter was the Regional Class A champion and placed thirteenth overall.

At the Newark competition early Saturday afternoon, which Grove City won by a large margin, a woman sitting next to me, an avowed marching band fan but one who doesn't get to shows very often, was struck by the widespread use of amplification. It didn't bother her, but it did seem unusual to her. In 2023.
I just watched video of a Grove City performance from 1992. (Good show. All Gershwin, I think.) And their woodwind soloists were amplified.
That is all.

We seem to be on a seven-day cycle here in Ohio. Lots of rain expected both Saturday and Sunday.

In 2021, there were ten II ratings on the first day (which usually has the fewest, at least proportionately). In 2022, there were just six II ratings on the first day. One judge I spoke to last year suggested the great weather made the difference. Will the cloudy skies and cooler temperatures mean a return to historical form this year?

I will update this tomorrow as the day goes along. Not too many of these bands got a 2 last year. Should be a very superior-heavy day. There is a slight chance of rain lingering throughout the entire day but it should be high 50s and cloudy for the most part.

Never have I been so shocked about a band’s rating as I am at this moment with Avon Lake.

Day 1 of state ends with only 5 bands getting II ratings. I believe that is an unprecedented plethora of superior ratings for one day of state. Finally met N.E. Brigand this evening, surprised we didn’t run into each other sooner.

Never have I been so shocked about a band’s rating as I am at this moment with Avon Lake. I felt a similar dismay, but when I shared it with a very experienced band director Saturday (who did not have a band in that day's competition), he was surprised that I liked their show. And then I was alarmed again today when Licking Valley likewise received a II.

Day 1 of state ends with only 5 bands getting II ratings. I believe that is an unprecedented plethora of superior ratings for one day of state. Finally met N.E. Brigand this evening, surprised we didn’t run into each other sooner. It was great to meet you, briefly thought it may have been! Hope our paths cross again. I would have had only 5 bands receving II ratings, swapping Meigs and Marion Harding for Avon Lake and Canal Winchester. But I had Meigs with a 79.5 and Marion Harding with a 79.9, so the judges and I weren't in strong disagreement about those two bands. Turning to Sunday, I would likewise have made an even swap with the judges, moving Licking Valley, Maumee, and Highland to Superior and moving Athens, Gallia Academy, and Kalida to Excellent. Apart from Licking Valley, these were fairly close calls, though. I strongly expected the judges would give Maumee a II, because they gave that rating to a very similar show from Maumee last year. I just happen to like that aggressive style more than the judges do. Above all, I want to congratulate the bands for perseverance today. It was consistently dreary both days, but a light mist set in during the second Sunday block, which became a light but pretty steady rain by the third block and then a heavier rain in the final block for Eastern Brown, Northwest, Deer Park, Troy, Beavercreek, and Olentangy Liberty. Bravo to those band and especially to Deer Park, who had the heaviest rain I've experienced at a competition this year.

Another band in the same district is Thomas Worthington HS and they have a pretty average marching band that I'm pretty sure only does OMEA unlike Worthington Kilbourne which does both OMEA and BOA. Depends on how average is defined. Among Ohio's 200+ competing bands, Thomas Worthington is probably in the top 25%. If Thomas Worthington was to go into BOA they'd be pretty average Could be. What does pretty average mean to you? For example, if I add up the scores of all 99 bands at Prelims in last years' Grand Nationals, drop the highest and the lowest and divide by 97 bands, I get an average of 76.48. Worthington Kilbourne's score at last year's Prelims was 76.18. Does that mean that Kilbourne is a hair below average, i.e., that pretty average Thomas Worthington would outscore them by three tenths? they'd be somewhat average at regionals but below average at Grand Nats For what's it's worth, I think Thomas Worthington's shows of the past five years or so would score in the 68-71 range at Grand Nationals, although I also think a number of bands in their general range were overscored at Grand Nationals the last two years when compared with comparable bands earlier in the past decade (e.g., if Nordonia's 2014 show is a 71.6, then no way is Springboro's 2022 show a 72.5.) With one exception, I felt that Thos. Worthington's shows from 2016 on were stronger than their shows through 2014, with 2015 as a turning point. I ranked them 28th out of 125 bands in OMEA state finals in 2021, between Licking Heights and Bloom-Carroll, and while I don't have my 2022 list near at hand, I think they were close to that last year, albeit remembering that Licking Heights was stronger and Bloom-Carroll was weaker than they each were the year before.) Having now seen Thomas Worthington and their show "Unfinished," I feel comfortable saying, even with two days to come, that they are among the top ten bands in OMEA finals this year. There were only four bands who I thought were better the past two days (yes, Beavercreek is one of those; one of the others is Forest Hills, and I'm really disappointed that they're not going to Grand Nationals this year, because it's my favorite of their shows to date), and I only see four other bands listed next weekend who might be better. Wow, what a step up for this band.

Thanks for sharing that! As usual, it's almost as interesting to see who's not on that list as to see who is, and it's a useful reminder about the interplay between scores -- of which there are none at state finals -- and ratings. You shared scores from the Buckeye Invitational two weeks ago. Bands receiving all Superiors at that event had scored as low as 83 and as high as 93. I've heard of bands scoring as low as 81 while receiving all Superior ratings and as high as 88 without receiving all Superior ratings, although the latter is usually due to getting only an Excellent in guard or percussion, which don't contribute to the overall rating or score. Madeira scored 84.70 last week (and 80.06 just two weeks ago) but earned straight Superiors this weekend. Louisville outscored Hoover 92.46 to 91.76 last week, but Hoover and not Louisville received all Superior this week (different panels Saturday, though). Amherst scored 90.26 last week, beating Medina and North Royalton (tied at 89.44), but it was the latter two bands who earned all Superiors this weekend (and Medina and Amherst were on the same finals judging panel Saturday night), and having Amherst both weeks, I can say that they showed no decline the second time around. (Medina, on the other hand, I thought was slightly tighter this week vs. last). Much of this is just to say: all judging systems have their perils. See the angst about scores in the St. Louis Regional threads. (Speaking of which, congratulations to Lakota East on placing seventh in Finals there.) Has Medina done BOA before? Not in the past ten years. I don't know about before that.

It is important to note that more times than not, color guard is the II rating that keeps a band from straight I’s, and guard scores do not count towards the band overall score at local shows.
