Maryland: 1. Governor Thomas Johnson ( 51 members) .... 7. Urbana ( 61 members) ............ Achievements: ...... Urbana - Open Large State Champ I know I have mentioned it before but my grandson is zoned to attend Urbana HS. He’s definitely musically inclined but he’s also a great little baseball player so I don’t know what direction he will go! Hes going to be 11 in a month. He's close to 8th grade. I guess you'll see in a couple years. Urbana is one the many Maryland bands that travel out of state so it would be a great opportunity.

10/14North Carolina:1. Green Level 2. Cleveland 3. Panther Creek 4. Smithfield-Selma 5. Cary 6. Apex-Friendship 7. Green Hope 8. Holly Springs 9. Reagan (you've probably never heard of this group but they win all of the local NCBA shows but do not participate in BoA) 10. Corinth Holders It’s definitely close between Cleveland and Green Level. What makes me agree that Green Level is slightly above is their strength of schedule. They’re doing 2 BOA events and 3 local show, where they are going against some of the best bands in NC during the local shows. Cleveland is doing 4 local shows and 1 BOA regional, and none of the local shows feature many of the other big marching bands in NC. This week a good amount of the top NC bands are going to regionals (Cleveland in Orlando, Green Level in Maryland, Panther Creek and Cary at Johnston City), so it’ll be interesting to see where their scores lie. Looking back on the 2023 season, I would rank the bands as follows: - Green Level
- Panther Creek
- Cleveland
- Cary
- Green Hope
- Smithfield-Selma
- East Lincoln
- Apex Friendship
- Corinth Holders
- Reagan
The Cary, NC bands typically push each other and you find them positioned in the top 5 among North Carolina bands.

York Comprehensive I mean Fort Mill did beat York this year handidly in October, but let’s be honest they were very dirty. Summerville should be in-between Clover and TL Hanna. It’s only a matter of time before Catawba Ridge reaches that Wando/ DB level. I’d say 2-4 years from now.

Both Fort Mill and Summerville didn't really compete inside the state this year so it's understandable. I get it, Summerville even lost to Richmond Hill, GA by more than a point.

Is Harrison really at only 130 members? I counted each person through my computer screen twice, so I could be wrong, but it should be around 130 members. This is what I got: 88 Winds + 3 DM + 18 Color Guard + 14 Pit + 7 Drumline.

I kind of did this quick notice it's the only state I did that stop at 15 and not 32. I was planning to fix everything later after I finish a few other states to speed this up. Usually if I can't find a video of a later period of band, so usually I just based it upon their scoring through BOA, ARStates, or any other local competition like Fayetteville and Lake Hamilton, so that's why I put Fayetteville over Marion did so good this year I believe they earned first division rating for the first time at States just shows what an amazing year for them. I would have personally wanted Springdale Har-Ber at States they placed so well last year beating Bryant. Yea I just don't know what with Arkadelphia this year . I liked Siloam Springs Kaleidoscope show, Bryant show as well, and Har-Ber the sound they produce is crazy good. Tennessee: 1. Dobyns-Bennett 2. Bartlett 3. Arlington 4. Franklin 5. Collierville 6. After 35 years of being involved in the SC band scene, I've been able to witness the evolution of some programs and the falling away of others. Since the 80's (even accounting for a dip in the years immediately following the departure of Phil McIntyre from Byrnes), Wando, JFB (and Fort Mill for a large part of that time frame) have been the most dominant players. I don't see the Wando/JFB train changing anytime soon.
As far as how I would rank the current SC programs, it would probably be:
South Carolina: 1. Wando 2. James F. Byrnes 3. Catawba Ridge 4. Clover 5. Nation Ford 6. T.L. Hannah 7. Fort Mill 8. York Comprehensive 9. Summerville 10. Boiling Springs 11. Stratford 12. D.W. Daniel 13. Mauldin 14. Dorman 15. Travelers Rest 16. Pendleton 17. Blythewood 18. Ninety Six 19. Ashley Ridge 20. West Florence
I believe those top 5 could compete against each other regardless of classification. But at the end of the day, in a state competition (not BOA), Wando and JFB would likely still stand as 1 & 2. Just my opinion.

I'm going to take a try at Ohio again this year! This is more results based more on results than by my own eye, however for some of the close ones I had to use my opinion. ... I only managed to see 162 Ohio competition bands in 2023, but rather than wait any longer to see the other thirty plus, I'm going to offer my own list before we get any farther into 2024. As in past years, this is based on my own evaluation, although in close calls (and in the case of one band below that I only saw once, on video, in September), I do give some weight to the opinions of the judges. 1. William Mason 2. Centerville 3. Lakota West 4. Grove City 5. Lakota East 6. Dublin Coffman 7. Forest Hills 8. Beavercreek 9. Miamisburg 10. Milford 11. Kings 12. Worthington Kilbourne 13. As far as how I would rank the current SC programs, it would probably be: South Carolina:1. Wando 2. James F. Byrnes 3. Catawba Ridge 4. Clover 5. Nation Ford 6. T.L. Hannah 7. Fort Mill 8. York Comprehensive 9. Summerville 10. Boiling Springs 11. Stratford 12. D.W. Daniel 13. Mauldin 14. Dorman 15. Travelers Rest 16. Pendleton 17. Blythewood 18. Ninety Six 19. Ashley Ridge 20. West Florence I believe those top 5 could compete against each other regardless of classification. But at the end of the day, in a state competition (not BOA), Wando and JFB would likely still stand as 1 & 2. Just my opinion. I'd probably rearrange some of those bands a little but overall agree on this. I'd also add in River Bluff, Pickens, Powdersville, Liberty Greer and Fountain Inn as a 21-26.
