My school always did well (from the 70s to early 2000s) but never did BOA or similar. Just interesting that there's nothing there (except Newsome if that's the one near Tampa).

After 35 years of being involved in the SC band scene, I've been able to witness the evolution of some programs and the falling away of others. Since the 80's (even accounting for a dip in the years immediately following the departure of Phil McIntyre from Byrnes), Wando, JFB (and Fort Mill for a large part of that time frame) have been the most dominant players. I don't see the Wando/JFB train changing anytime soon. As far as how I would rank the current SC programs, it would probably be: South Carolina:1. Wando 2. James F. Byrnes 3. Catawba Ridge 4. Clover 5. Nation Ford 6. T.L. Hannah 7. Fort Mill 8. York Comprehensive 9. Summerville 10. Boiling Springs 11. Stratford 12. D.W. Daniel 13. Mauldin 14. Dorman 15. Travelers Rest 16. Pendleton 17. Blythewood 18. Ninety Six 19. Ashley Ridge 20. West Florence I believe those top 5 could compete against each other regardless of classification. But at the end of the day, in a state competition (not BOA), Wando and JFB would likely still stand as 1 & 2. Just my opinion. I think DW Daniel is really on the up and up. Their director has been building a great program over there he’s a nice guy creating a comprehensive culture. They’ve racked up a few state championships now which is no easy feat. It’s just taken them time for show design to catch up.

Here's my KY band rankings for 2023
1: Lafayette 2: Campbell County 3: Bourbon County 4: Murray 5: Adair County 6: Beechwood 7: 8: I actually have no idea what to put for 7th and 8th since I don't know much on KY bands sadly

I'm not a brave enough soul to do a 'definitive ranking,' not because I lack interest and passion for Kentucky bands but because I'm almost too into it. That said, I would feel pretty confident in these tiers:
Lafayette Madison Central or Murray. Campbell??? Beechwood or Estill. Bourbon or Anderson.
Only saw Campbell on YouTube, so they're hard, but you won't convince me they were higher than that, I could be convinced they were below Beech and Estill, but not below Bourbon or Anderson. This is hardly an insult, the programs above them were stunning... consider it more of an invitation to attend State next year and prove me wrong.
Adair is on the right track, but not yet part of this discussion. Most Improved from 2022, though.

Someone’s criteria might be based solely on KMEA performance/participation, some else’s might be BOA criteria, someone else’s might be a combination of both. Mine would be the very latter. Also I don’t think Campbell will ever go to State. Not because they’re scared, but because I think most bands in the KMEA circuit don’t even want to KMEA anymore. 😂 Given the growth they are having though, in numbers and in talent (they will probably be the largest BOA AA band in the country this year), this may be the year we see them at or close to the level of a Madison Central or a Murray. But enough about them… what about the others? 😊

After about that 7-8 spot it gets super murky to me. I would put up some groups I love such as Christian County and Daviess County to round out the top 10, with Madisonville nipping right behind them. This is not usually the case, but in 2023 I felt 5A was a bit of a let down after Lafayette and Madison Central.

I see no one has yet been brave enough to do Kentucky. 👀 I have my theories as to why, but I would love to see your take, statechamp1239 ! You guess correctly why I didn't do Kentucky. I never agree with BOA when it comes to KY band, and MSBA and KMEA is kind of hard to compare, plus there is so much talent from so many bands, so it's hard picking the best. I actually redid this list like couple of time back in January and stopped. This is my opinion with little help from BOA, more KMEA which I agreed more, and little of MSBA. 2023 Kentucky: 1. Lafayette 2. Larry A. Ryle 3. Murray 4. Madison Central 5. Beechwood 6. Campbell County 7. Estill County 8. Anderson County 9. Bourbon County 10. Paul Laurence Dunbar 11. George Rogers Clark 12. Second, I think we're in general agreement with two medium-to-large exceptions: I was not as impressed by Ryle as you clearly were, and I would have had ChrisCo much, much higher. Like, I thought they were clearly better than Adair, for instance. Not sure if you're interested in elaborating on your thoughts, but I'd be interested to read them. Thanks again!

Like, I thought they were clearly better than Adair, for instance. Not sure if you're interested in elaborating on your thoughts, but I'd be interested to read them. Thanks again! I was really impressed by Ryle. I thought they were a lot cleaner visually than most of top leading bands, and the sound was sooo good and crisps, I loved the sousaphones they produced a nice low sound that really projected at each attack in the beginning, the crescendo from the whole band was beautiful done every time, but in term of show design and drill which was simpler than most bands imo it didn't really impress me as much compared to Madsion Central arm movement with their yellow sleeves while doing those small rotation in boxes which really added to their visual points, and the long flag the color guard used to look like sun rays, the yellow and black tiles adding so much to effect, and Murray usage of different colors for the two mob families and quick tempo changes from each formation, so I can see why u weren't impressed by Ryle, if I had to base it off of BOA scoring, I would probably put Ryle somewhere around 4 th-7 th place. Maybe I was little heavily focus on the KMEA scores. I did find Christian County show to be a lot better than Russell County and Adair County I mean come on that freaking sax solo *chef's kiss*. I'll look over the videos again and fix up the list plus, I think my love for Adair County probably blinded me, but I did like Taylor County show that's why I did put them higher than Adair KMEA placement I also did wanted to put Russell County over Adair too, but I forgot why I didn't. Campbell County as well South Oldham was the hardest to figure out since South Oldham defeated North Hardin in BOA Indy SR by more than a point and was near to Bellbrook, OH in MSBA Championships who they lost to Grayson County, KY, and Grayson County beat Beechwood in BOA GN by a point, and Christian County beat everyone in GN so idk, and Campbell County show this year wasn't my favorite compare to their 2022 show. I originally wanted to put CC between Anderson and Bourbon but only boosted them since they beat Lakota West in MSBA Championships.

aiden I'm just kidding Florida Bandmaster Association provides size numbers each year and rating from each Region assessment. I usually count though my screen for other states. If only other state programs did this Texas does it if you make UIL States and Kansas back then for KBA and that's it, but since everyone does FBA Assessment u get the whole state membership numbers which is cool.

You've definitely made me go back rewatch Ryle... I think the show just wasn't to my taste and I may have let that blind me to some of the good stuff they were doing. Personally, I still wouldn't have them in my top 5, but I can see where you're coming from.

Arkansas: 1. Bentonville 2. Lake Hamilton 3. Fayetteville 4. Van Buren 5. Bryant 6. Springdale Har-Ber 7. Cabot 8. Bentonville West 9. Jonesboro 10. Paragould 11. Greene County Tech 12. Rogers 13. Benton 14. Siloam Springs 15. Marion First Out: Greenwood Next 10: Alma, Brookland, Conway, Lakeside, Rogers Heritage, Rivercrest, Arkadelphia, Pottsville, Springdale Achievement: - Job well done by Bentonville on becoming the first Arkansas band to make finals, placing 9th. - Lake Hamilton placing 3rd at Grand National Class 2A. - Bentonville winning their 5th consecutive win in Class 7A. - Lake Hamilton winning Class 6A. - Paragould on their 8th consecutive win in Class 5A - Rivercrest defeated the incomparable Arkadelphia with a 7-year streak by a 0.1 difference. - Booneville first ever win at State in Class 3A. - Baptist Preparatory School winning its consecutive State twice in a row. Bryant making finals for the first time at the BOA Memphis Regional, as well Powerband Classic BOA affiliated show Champs. Siloam Springs is the most under rated Arkansas band in my opinion. They beat some big name bands at BMI 2023 and have multiple local competetion wins under their belt. I would also watch for both Rogers and Rogers Heritage in the next coming years. They are building something really special at both schools and have made big staff changes that have really helped their programs. Rogers impressed me starting in 2022 with their Eygpt show that included that sick pyramid prop and further impressed me in 2023. Rogers Heritage had a really fun show in 2023 and definitely showed flashes of a quickly growing group. Both bands could soon be contenders for top 5 in the 7A class if they continue to grow. Also, how come Har-Ber never competes at State Marching Contest? They are undoubtly one of the best groups in the state yet don't regulary compete?
