Pretty Tight Cutoff for finals here as well:
9. Cicero-North Syracuse H.S., NY 69.70 10. John P. Stevens H.S., NJ 69.65 ----------------------------------- 11. James W. Robinson Secondary School, VA 69.45 12. Wakefield H.S., MA 69.35 13. Cape Fear H.S., NC 69.30
Should also mention that Norwin was 1st in prelims by 2.3 over James Madison.

This. I couldn't believe my ears when Avon and Carmel tied for the win one year, only to have it broken by GE. The fact that this wasn't in play even then is beyond ridiculous. Anything other than advancement or winning seems fine to go with a tie-breaker, but this is absolutely absurd. I can't even begin to imagine how it could possibly diminish Madison's huge accomplishment by saying Norwin tied them for the win. Something tells me we'll see a correction on the MFA page once they get wind of this.

I'm heartbroken for Wakefield. Going in I knew they had a chance, but it would be close. They've been steadily improving over the past couple of years. They were .3 away from being only the second Massachusetts band to make finals at a BOA event. The awful part is they were top 10 in every caption except for visual GE, where they were 20th (6th in overall music GE). Hopefully this hasn't soured them to the experience and they try again. I love seeing MA representation at BOA, and as it stands, they're only the third MA band to compete at a BOA event. Also, to add context for folks who are unfamiliar with where US Bands participants compare to BOA, the following bands are always in the top ~25% of US Bands Championships. I don't believe anybody who has won in recent years attended this event, but this crew is usually in the 2-5 range in their respective classes. The bands that have competed in BOA that tend to win in US Bands are South Brunswick and, thanks to Connecticut's Musical Arts Conference shutting down, Trumbull and Norwalk. 72.75 - Elizabeth 72.10 - Westfield 70.35 - John P. Stevens 68.15 - West Orange 62.55 - Edison Spring-Ford and Brick Memorial have competed in US Bands in the past. Brick Memorial (which finished just outside of finals and has made finals at this event in recent years) sticks mainly to Tournament of Bands, which is a huge competitor to US Bands in the Mid-Atlantic, and they have historically dominated the circuit. Spring-Ford was dominating Tournament of Bands for several years, but then decided to focus on Cavalcade of Bands, another circuit which is concentrated mainly in Eastern PA, Southern NJ and Delaware.

It's been updated in BOA's recap, but I haven't seen any acknowledgment that a mistake was made. I'm sure they'll send an apology note and another trophy to Norwin.

Yes, according to BOA rules, this regional has two champions; James Madison and Norwin. After the whole 2016 tie for GN title, any tie for the top at Grand Nationals or Regionals will have co champions. This is the first instance where we have seen this new rule take effect.
So this is the first regional win for James Madison. The very first BOA (MBA back then) regional was held in 1978 and won by Falls Church HS, VA. A Virginia band has not won a regional title since; until last night.
As for Norwin. This makes regional win number 29! They continue to be the band with the most regional titles (they have held the record for most regional wins going all they way back to 1980). They are the only band to have won at least one regional title in each of the five decades of BOA's existence.

Not enough people are talking about this considering it’s showing a precedent for how first place ties will be handled at regionals

Cape Fear missing finals here somewhat shows the steep decline of their program in recent years. This was probably not the finish they were hoping for at this regional. I hope they can recover and become the Cape Fear band we know and love again!
Additionally, I was surprised to see Brick Memorial out of finals. I thought they deserved to be in.

Surprised to see Robinson narrowly missing finals. They placed 19th at this regional last year. Several of these band's will be at the Lynchburg competition in a few weeks so very interested to see that one.

Not enough people are talking about this considering it’s showing a precedent for how first place ties will be handled at regionals The precedent seems to be that first place will be announced to the band with the higher G.E. score, no one on site will remember the rule or be brave enough to go up to the announcer and tell him BOA just made a mistake, and it will only be quietly fixed the next day.
