I'm really looking forward to seeing the Carolina groups. Hoping they do very well here. I second that. I'm particularly interested as to where Bartlett, Catawba Ridge, and Panther Creek will land. Just glancing over, you had me thinking Panther Creek, TX had joined up and I missed it, lol

The American Fork singer still worries me with such a predominet part she has. It is what it is at this point Honestly the octave jump from G4 - G5 will be the hardest part for her since it could crack or not sound very full

It is what it is at this point Honestly the octave jump from G4 - G5 will be the hardest part for her since it could crack or not sound very full It's not the difficulty of the part she's playing, she's doing a great job with what she's being asked to do It's not her ability as a musician, she's clearly fully capable and is extremely talented It's how much of the show the part she's playing constitutes. It would be much more effective if scaled back, in the opinion of many of us who have been tracking AF throughout the year. But it's their show, and their prerogative to make changes or not however they see fit. I just know I'm hoping to see them on the field 3 times this week

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I am still not ready to call Bridgeland a lock yet at GN after watching their UIL prelims performance. I wish the music grabbed me a bit more. I was very impressed with the visual though. A bit of dirt all around but it might not matter.

After a wild weekend of ISSMA, Super Regionals, UIL, St. George, and Midstates, we are HERE! Can't wait for the last weekend of the year! So much excitement. Here is where I think I've landed on predictions

-The Panel 1 2A potential reps list is pretty long. I can see a world where Greenfield Central is in or Goshen. Can't count out Greendale or Camdenton. ANYTHING Can happen there. -Keeping up with the Panel 1 Anything can happen train. Finding an 11 out of that group is tougher than you would think. I could see any number of groups in Panel one making the 11. On the flip, its hard to see anyone who misses the 11 make the next 8. Some craziness is sure to come. But a really good band out there is only going to get 1 run. I just hope they have the best run they can!

Anyone know if the Volunteer information packets for this weekend have been sent out yet? My wife and I have volunteered for Grand Nats since 2010 and signed up again for this year, but haven't received anything yet. Anyway, just checking since it's only a few days away. I have not received the Google Drive link from BOA with the schedules and packets yet - let me check in an see what I can find out :-) Just got the email with the Volunteer information for this weekend... looking forward to it, again!

Wish they were bringing more of a GN caliber show, if you will. Their show is very simple. Perhaps they should’ve waited a little longer to hit Indy. I have them in the top fifteen.

At some point, you just gotta go for it, though. If you’re always waiting for the right time, you may never feel “ready.” To the same point, when you’re in the initial planning stages of a season and show, it’s hard to anticipate how everything will all pan out. Perhaps they had grander ideas that just didn’t happen. It’ll be nice to see how it all shakes out on the national stage!

The Viewers Guide to the 2024 BOA Grand National Championships
The finale of the 2024 season is almost upon us! Instead the typical of analyses that I've done for the other events this year, I'm going to be switching it up a bit. I'll be doing a brief breakdown of each block of prelims. Now with 110+ bands from 20 states participating this weekend, there's less breaks then normal this year. So the blocks will be broken by judging panel. Whenever there's a switch in the judging panel is when the next block begins. The goal of this guide is to give y'all an idea of what to expect and who to watch this week (though you should watch and support all 114 bands attending). With all that said, here is my breakdown of each block of prelims, beginning with:
Block 1 - Thursday 7:00 AM-9:45 AM
Things kick off bright and early on Thursday Morning at 7:00 AM (6:00 AM if you're on central time like me). This block is one of the more lowkey blocks of the event. Cambridge is a solid program down in Georgia making their first Grand Nationals appearance, and are definitely one's worth watching. There are some good smaller bands in this block too such as Herscher, Monticello, Norwood, & Valley.
Block 2 - Thursday 9:45 AM-12:00 PM
We'll start to see a little bit of movement in this block, particularly in the Class A department. Both Murray & Archbishop Alter are likely to advance to semis on Class Representation. Murray had a strong outing earlier this season at the Memphis Regional, finishing 8th, while Archbishop Alter had strong showings at both the Toledo & Johnson City regionals, making finals at the former. Aside from them, Ben Davis performs in this block and are always a group worth checking out. Hardin Valley Academy is also another solid group performing in this block as well, following a finals appearance at the Johnson City regional earlier this season.
Block 3 - Thursday 12:30 PM-3:00 PM
O'Fallon Township is the highlight of this block as they look for their 2nd Grand National Finals Appearance. O'Fallon's program, while not as memorable as last season, is still a very solid and well put together show and the kids are selling it extremely well. O'Fallon finished 5th at the St. Louis Super Regional a few weeks ago, and will look for a chance at 3 performances this week. Outside of O'Fallon, there will be some more movement for a potential Class AA rep spot. Greenfield Central is one of those groups that could get it, following a surprise win in the ISSMA Class B Championships this past weekend. Anderson County is also another potential Class AA Rep, following a finals appearance at the Obetz Regional earlier this season.
Block 4 - Thursday 3:00 PM-6:00 PM
This block is where things start to pick up. The clear highlight of this block will be Broken Arrow, returning to Nats after skipping last season. Broken Arrow feels completely different this season, following their split from Wes Cartwright, but I'm digging this "new" Broken Arrow. Despite a tight loss to Blue Springs at the St. Louis Super Regional, they're squarely in the conversation of potentially bringing the Eagle back to Oklahoma. Aside from Broken Arrow, there are plenty of solid groups in this block. Friendswood will be the first of the #TeamTexas groups attending this weekend, and while I don't think they're a contender for Finals, they have a very fun show that we should see at least twice this week. Noblesville kicks off this block and will be looking for their first semifinalist appearance, following their 2nd straight finalist appearance at the Indianapolis Super Regional. Walled Lake had a very strong showing at the Michigan State Marching Band Championships, which should give them strong momentum to make semifinals for the 2nd year in a row. Campbell County is also another candidate for a semifinals appearance, following a 3rd place result at the Obetz Regional earlier this season. In addition to them, this block will also contain performances from other solid groups such as Kickapoo, Lawrence Township & Reeths-Puffer.
Block 5 - Thursday 6:00 PM-8:30 PM
This block will contain 2 potential contenders for the eagle on Saturday. The first one of these contenders is William Mason. Mason's Looney Tune-esque show is very weird, yet very delightful at the same time. Mason finished 4th at the Indianapolis Super Regional, and they should be in contention here if they've cleaned the show up nicely. The other potential contender is defending Grand National Champion, Avon, who closes out this block. Avon has had a strong season so far, winning the Indianapolis Super Regional & following that up with a win at ISSMA State Finals last weekend. They are in a great position to defend their title. In addition to those 2, this block will have some other solid groups that we might see in semis. Lincoln-Way narrowly missed out on finals at the Indianapolis Super Regional but could bounce back with a semifinals appearance here. Westlake (UT) finished 3rd at the St. George Regional last weekend and could make it in. Marian Catholic had a very good showing at the St. Louis Super Regional a couple weeks ago and seem poised to advance to semis this week, either on score or as a Class Rep. Miamisburg, Center Grove, & Floyd Central are also very solid groups to watch for in this block.
Block 6 - Thursday 8:45 PM-11:15 PM
The final block of Thursday is one of 2 blocks this event that I would designate as a "can't miss" block. This block will contain 40% of the ISSMA Class A Finalists from this past weekend. Far and away the best group of this block is Carmel. This is probably one of my favorite Carmel shows in recent memory and following runner-up finishes to Avon at both the Indianapolis Super Regional & ISSMA State Finals, we'll see if Carmel will be able to make the push to overtake them at Grand Nationals. Castle is also well poised to return to Finals this year. Their show Neo-Noir might possibly be my favorite show of the season, and there's no doubt in my mind that we'll be seeing them 3 times this week. For the last of the ISSMA Finalists contingent in this block, we have returning Grand National Finalists Brownsburg & Fishers. Brownsburg's show feels like a bit of the standard we're used to seeing from Wes Cartwright. However, Brownsburgs 6th place finish at the Indy Super Regional & their 4th place finish at ISSMA State Finals should give them the momentum needed to get back to finals for the 3rd straight year. Fishers has a fun racing-themed show this season, but haven't been getting the results I would've expected, following an 11th place finish at the Indianapolis Super Regional. They did however have a very strong run at ISSMA State Finals to finish 6th, so they might be gaining momentum at the right time. Outside of Indiana, there are some other strong groups in this block, some of whom are finalist-caliber. American Fork just took a decisive victory at the St. George Regional this past weekend and will look to finally break back into finals here. Dobyns-Bennett has had an interesting season, winning the Chattanooga Regional but then finishing a disappointing 3rd place at the Johnson City Regional. It'll be interesting to see how much Dobyns-Bennett has cleaned in the weeks since then, but they should be in contention for a spot in Finals. Norwin returns to Grand Nationals for the first time since 2021. Norwin finished runner-up to Kiski Area at the Mid-Atlantic Regional this season, and should be in semifinals this week. Lastly, Centerville, Columbus, & Christian Academy of Louisville should also provide good performances in this block.
Block 7 - Friday 7:00 AM-10:15 AM
The first block of Fridays competition will contain some more strong contenders. Highlighting this block is Cedar Park, making their first Grand Nationals appearance since 2016. Cedar Park finished 2nd at the Austin Regional, won the UIL 5A SMBC Championship, and finished 10th at the San Antonio Super Regional. They are the likeliest group to win Class AAA and potentially find themselves in the top half of finals. Prosper is also another finalist contender in this block. The 2-time Grand National finalist finished 4th earlier this season at the Prosper Regional, and while their show is your typical Wes C. show, we should see them 3 times this week. Outside of the Texas groups, there are some other strong bands in this block. Jenks is making their first appearance at Grand Nationals since their finalist appearance in 2018. They've turned around their season from missing finals at the Prosper Regional to a 3rd place finish at OBA. They could be a potential dark horse for a finalist spot here. Likewise, Union is making their first appearance since their last finalist appearance in 2019. Union finished 11th at the St. Louis Super Regional a couple weeks ago and 6th at OBA. We should get to see them at least twice this week. Catawba Ridge had a strong showing earlier this season at the Carolina Regional, finishing 3rd and winning the Visual Caption. After missing semis in 2022, they should make it this season. Cass could make a push for a AA rep spot following top half final finishes at the Chattanooga & Johnson City Regionals. 2018 semifinalist Camdenton could also make a surprise push for semis, as could Deer Creek & Franklin.
Block 8 - Friday 10:30 AM-1:45 PM
This is the 2nd block I would designate as "can't miss." Tarpon Springs headlines this block and they've been through it this year having to deal with not one but two hurricanes. Yet despite that, this season, in my opinion, is Tarpon's best shot at the eagle since 2014. They sounded magnificent in their dominate Orlando Regional victory, and they very well could get the win here on the 10-year anniversary of their first Grand Nationals win. Outside of Tarpon, several strong groups make up this block. Leander makes a return to Grand Nationals for the first time since 2019, and despite missing finals at San Antonio, they should be in good position for 3 performances this week. Bridgeland makes their Grand Nationals debut following their strong 2023 season. Bridgeland finished 3rd earlier this year at the Webster Regional, and I'll be excited to see if they can get 3 performances this weekend. Argyle could potentially medal in Class AA in their Grand Nationals debut, following their 7th place finish at UIL 5A SMBC. Stoneman Douglas returns to Grand Nationals and will be looking for another semifinals appearance following their 3rd place finish at the Orlando Regional. Rosemount will try to make it to semifinals for the third time following a win at the Iowa Regional and a 6th place finish at the St. Louis Super Regional. Mustang finished 8th at the Prosper Regional, but finished a disappointing 9th at OBA. They could rebound with a semis appearance here. There are other very solid bands in this block that you can't miss including 2023 Troy Regional Champion South Jones, Nixa, DeSoto Central, Panther Creek, and Pacific Northwest Regional Champion Cheney, who will be traveling over 1,950 miles to perform at Nats.
Block 9 - Friday 2:00 PM-5:15 PM
The action starts to wind down as we head into the latter part of Friday, but there are still plenty of semifinalist-caliber groups to watch in this block. Bartlett is coming off their 2nd straight victory at the Memphis Regional, and will be going for their 2nd straight semifinalist appearance this week. Lakota East finished 3rd at the Chattanooga Regional earlier this season and could make semifinals here. Rockford finished 3rd at the Toledo Regional earlier this season and 2nd in their flight at the Michigan State Championships. After missing semifinals last year, there's no doubt they are eager to return this year. Plymouth-Canton hasn't missed semifinals since 2015 (when they did not attend) and will look to maintain that streak. Greendale could make some noise in Class AA with their Taylor Swift-inspired show. Clover makes their Grand Nationals debut following a solid showing at the Johnson City Regional. Defending Class A Champion Bourbon County will look to defend their Class A title this weekend. Goshen closes out this block, and they could also make it into semis either on score or as a Class AA Rep.
Block 10 - Friday 5:30 PM-8:45 PM
The final block of prelims fittingly contains the 2 bands that fought for the first regional title of the season all the way back in September at Toledo, Homestead & Jenison. Homestead came out on top that day and have had a resurgent season, finishing 10th at the Indianapolis Super Regional & 5th last weekend at ISSMA State Finals. Homestead should get 2 performances this week and could find themselves as a dark horse for a finals spot. The runner-up at Toledo, Jenison, hasn't had a significant result since, at least not until last weekend when they posted the highest score of the bands competing at Michigan State Championships, though in a different flight then Walled Lake, Rockford, etc. It'll be exciting to see how much Jenison's show has developed since then as they close out prelims. Other groups to watch in this block include Norton, Worthington Kilbourne, Bellbrook, & Cary.
There's going to be some very good bands in prelims that will only get 1 performance, and there will be some very good bands that make semis that will only get 2 performances. With that said, below are my final predictions of the season. Good luck to everyone participating this week!
Final Predictions:
1. Tarpon Springs H.S., FL 2. Avon H.S., IN 3. Carmel H.S., IN 4. Broken Arrow H.S., OK 5. William Mason H.S., OH 6. Cedar Park H.S., TX 7. Castle H.S., IN 8. Prosper H.S., TX 9. Leander H.S., TX 10. Bridgeland H.S., TX 11. Brownsburg H.S., IN 12. American Fork H.S., UT
Class A Champion: Marian Catholic H.S., IL Class AA Champion: Tarpon Springs H.S., FL Class AAA Champion: Cedar Park H.S., TX Class AAAA Champion: Carmel H.S., IN (yes)
Other Semifinalists: O'Fallon Township, Catawba Ridge, Jenks, Union, Bartlett, Rockford, Goshen, Dobyns-Bennett, Stoneman Douglas, Jenison, Argyle, Fishers, Homestead, Norwin, Mustang, Rosemount, Friendswood, Walled Lake, Murray, Bourbon County, Archbishop Alter

All predictions I’ve seen on this page have either had Dobyns Bennett in 6th or not making finals. The bottom half of finals seems to be a wildcard this year.

Hopefully the rain doesn't hit too hard, that would be pretty annoying. I remember pushing from the convention center to the stadium in the snow for Semi-Finals in 2022, praying our mallets wouldn't get wet (they didn't thankfully). It threw a bit of a curveball into things, but it was cinematic AF (;

Hoping to find some help here! This is my first time attending Grand Nationals, so looking for any and all advice that will be helpful for a first-timer.
Also, can someone explain what exactly are the class reps? Are these bands that the judges thought were good they just didn’t quite have the scores needed to make it to semis?

Hard for me to imagine a band (Bridgeland) makes 6A state finals and then misses Nats finals a few days later. But crazier things have happened I guess.

Only a 3rd of ISSMA’s class A are assumed to make finals at Nats this year. Bridgeland UIL 6a final is a definite statement but in no way a guarantee at any BOA Regional,Super Regional and Nats

Also, can someone explain what exactly are the class reps? Are these bands that the judges thought were good they just didn’t quite have the scores needed to make it to semis? Basically, BOA policy (Official Procedures section 13.01.c) requires that there be at least two bands from each class from each Prelims in Semi-finals. There are a baseline of 30 semifinalists, chosen by being one of the top 11 for one of the two Prelims or one of the next eight highest scoring overall. If those 30 don't include two bands from each class and each Prelims, they add the top-scoring bands from each class until that requirement is met. This makes the hypothetical maximum Semifinals 42 bands large, if all 30 of baseline groups were class 4A. (30 base plus 2 1A groups from Prelims 1 and 2 1A groups from Prelims 2, plus 2 2A groups each from Prelims 1 and 2, plus 2 3A groups each from Prelims 1 and 2.) Obviously this would never actually happen, but that's the hypothetical maximum, and that's how class reps work. Does that make sense?

Also, can someone explain what exactly are the class reps? Are these bands that the judges thought were good they just didn’t quite have the scores needed to make it to semis? For some advice talk to any other band you can while you are there make new friends, trust me there will be a lot of people that like your show and will want to talk about it. Secondly this is just another weekend this is your last chance to for you to show up and prove what you can do on the field take the harness the energy the crowd gives you and leave nothing left. To answer the second part the top 11 from each panel and then the next 8 highest scores regardless of the panel (11+11+8). Then there has to be enough bands to decide placements in each class so then the class reps the 2 bands in each panel from each class (correct me if I am wrong). For example, in 2A tarpon will make semifinals on score but there needs to be enough bands to decide placements so the class reps would be the next bands in the class.

unfortunately, i am a believer in the draw for semis effecting the results and thats how i think the bubble finalist will be determined. students will preform better at 1-4pm than 7-9am, and i think that can be the difference between an 89 and in finals or an 87 and just out.
