For those that post/lurk on these forums and are students competing this weekend. I hope you step back and forget all the rankings and predictions. Whether you are in a band that isn’t mentioned on these forum rankings, a band hoping to make finals for the first time, or a student that is lucky enough to be considered a finals lock. Just enjoy the trip. Enjoy the fun moments and memories you are creating with your friends. The last time I competed was in 2016. I was apart of a band that was predicted to make finals my freshmen year that didn’t and a band that made finals for the first time my junior year. Some of my favorite memories come from both of those years. And if you are a parent hoping your child makes finals (and they don’t..) DO NOT SELL THOSE FINALS TICKETS. Go watch. And I hope your student gets to as well. Being able to watch finals is such an amazing opportunity, the energy in the stadium is something that is so difficult to describe. In fact, I feel bad for bands that are consistently in finals and never get to observe the experience as a spectator. Have a good weekend! Enjoy it! Best of luck to those competing.

Is this the year the band that performs 9th in finals finally breaks through to win?

Gosh I hope so. Too bad Blue Springs isn’t here this year! They would have had as good of chance as any! Like I’ve said below, it would be the best Grand Nats ever if everyone’s predictions were way off and someone new took home the Eagle.

Going into this week I truly believe this race is between Carmel and Avon for the eagle, unfortunately it’s typically these two, but it is extremely well deserved.
Avons cleanliness is unmatched and their love for a performance screams through during every show.
Carmels use of the Bartok is unlike anything I’ve seen before while having a balanced ensemble sound and complex classic drum corp style drill.
This will be my favorite nats for sure

This happens because (officially) the travel distance rules allow all of the local bands to volunteer to perform on Thursday and (unofficially) because it makes financial sense to have those local bands perform in the evening, when more parents, etc. can attend (and thus spend money on tickets). *and less/no classtime being missed Attend class? A sore subject for me, because I know of one “local” band who will practice Thursday morning during school hours, travel to perform in the afternoon, come back, practice during school hours on Friday, and then travel back Friday afternoon. I’m not sure how that has become an accepted practice, but the school tolerates it.

Could Centerville miss semi finals for only the 2ND time in all of grand national history being 2016? Crazy what happens in a high attendance stacked year.

Darn those schools that have good relationships with their administration who are wanting their students to have the best experience that they can by maximizing their final days together. I am so upset with Principals and Superintendents who care enough to work alongside a music department. Boo hiss.

Also, has Texas ever had a band come to GN and not advance to Semifinals? Clear Brook in 2009. Also, didn't Hidalgo come one year and not make semis?

If you are referring to the band I think you are likely referring to, when Grand Nationals is on the non-Taylor Swift schedule they often don't have school on Thursday and Friday of the week leading up to Veteran's day. In that case, they're not missing class because there is no class to miss.

Watch for a schedule change for Thursday. The rumored 114th group appears ready to be added at 7:00 a.m. with everyone else moving 15 minutes later. I was told MFA made the conscious decision to only update schedules when they publish the "final" schedule during show week. As we have seen, it is still possible to see another update to "final V2." Less than 24 hours out, the scenario in my post is looking less and less likely to come to fruition.

I was gonna say, why wait to update the schedule the DAY OF the competition, throwing over a dozen groups for a loop, for a band that couldn’t be bothered to sign up earlier?

They are not excused from any tests and don't get any extension for homework. You should be happy your school is so supportive and understanding.

Great words of encouragement! I competed in a band that won a regional but never made it past prelims for GN. Now, I'm a parent of a group that is a consistent finals lock. It is extremely humbling and a fantastic opportunity to witness both ends. Good luck to all competing bands. You will not forgot this experience so make it special!

Maybe this is a silly question to ask, but I’ve seen several posters on here make the comment that some bands are being held back their show designs. To get to the point, I’m curious what specific aspects make a show good?

Someone may write an essay on this, but honestly just watch the shows that have won in the past and you'll start to see what works and what doesn't.
