Chino, Diamond Bar, Flanagan, Timber Creek, Cape Fear, and NEISD have all fielded SW groups in the past, but the WGI website is out of date. (i.e. Flanagan is competing in open class this year and not doing WGI) [/quote] Good call, but how on earth did we miss this key piece of information? That's pretty major news and shocking to hear. I know they didn't finish quite as high as they typically do last year, but they were still a very, very solid world class guard.

Oh it’s so wild. I hadn’t seen anything from them on wgi or social media. I went to the SFWGA website and saw that they’re competing in open. I’m sure it’s a combination of factors, but I still expect the same high standard from them this year. Also, their director is also the director at Stoneman, so it’s going to be an interesting year from the Florida guards!

Looks like there was a whole wave of Flanagan folks to MSD over this past summer. First the principal, then the band director, and then the guard team of Broadbent, Zubkovs, and Winans. That's pretty crazy, as Broadbent had basically built the Flanagan program to what it is now, and I'm pretty sure he was also a teacher at the school.

Oh man, someone needs to talk me out of doing winter guard. BA, VR, O’Fallon, Lincoln-Way, Mustang, Nixa, Camdenton, Jenks, Windermere....all of my MUST-sees look like they could have two or three appearances.
Maybe I need to start a podcast so I have a good excuse to go 🤣

I have no idea why the post got moved...🤔 BA doesn’t even have a guard! But if we’re going to talk about winter guard, I’ll be attending WGI Tulsa while running social media for WGI this year. My college group will be there, and I’m excited to see them! I’m also very excited to see Jenks Open, Kickapoo Emulation, and Northwest Independent. It looks like Bentonville Open is on the waiting list, and I’m really hoping they get in! I have a good friend who was a member who is in CGT now.

Lots of room for these Austin and San Antonio area groups to grow this season!

Did Lindsey Vento have anything to do with Vista Ridge’s guards this year, or was that only in the fall?
Also, does anyone know an exact reason why Broken Arrow doesn’t have a winter guard? I discussed it with some hornline & percussion students and their answers were that the guard isn’t good enough and that not enough students would participate. I disagree with first one, and I find it hard to believe that with ~80 fall guard members, as well as winds who have spun before, they wouldn’t be able to come up with at least 30.

Being a brass player myself who loves Texas Music Arts and DCI, i really haven’t focused much attention to the production the guards bring to the sport. Because I always want to learn more, I have recently stared watching WGI videos from last seasons and some this year. I am humbled at the level of excellence that these kids perform at. I was even more humbled at the level of superiority our Northern programs (outside Texas) bring to sport! I have to ask. Does the Texas 8 hour rule hurt our guard programs? What’s in the guards water in the Midwest? 💪. Honestly curious.

In fact I asked Leander’s colorguard Director last weekend why we aren’t using sabres this season and his response was, “because I only have eight hours a week with these kids!” I guess they have to pick what they want to focus on and give all their time to that whereas groups outside of Texas can focus more on the bigger picture. They can practice all week long and all day Saturday if they want to. But not here. :/

I can’t imagine the 8 hour rule. In high school, both the fall and winter season, we would have 8 hour DAYS along with 6 hour night practices twice a week (3 varsity/ 3 JV). For the fall, we would have guard-only summer clinics that were probably close to 8 hours every day for a week or more. And this was with a winter guard that almost exclusively competes in a local circuit.

Did I just hear Vista Ridge Varsity got promoted to Scholastic A? That’s fantastic! They did! They had a great run yesterday and they are definitely ready for more. I’m not sure why TCGC has so many more classifications than WGI (Cadet, Novice, Scholastic Regional A, Scholastic JV, Scholastic AA, Scholastic A, Scholastic National A, Open, World and the Independent classes too), but Vista Ridge most certainly deserves to be moved up. They were a real treat to watch yesterday! As were many of the groups.

Girl, it’s truly incredible what these kids can accomplish in eight hours but we will never reach the heights of an Avon level guard this way. Very frustrating.

I saw Ms Vento walk across the floor yesterday so she must be working with some of the groups still? Not 100% sure. That’s interesting that Broken Arrow doesn’t do winter guard. Seems like a no brainer to me! Ronald Reagan has THREE!

To this day I still can't imagine how the Texas groups are so fantastic with only 8 hours of practice. It took us every minute of practice to achieve what we did in high school, and that was with 20+ hours of out-of-school practice each week (I participated on the percussion side of the activity). Yes, 20+ hours, not including in-school time and not including travel and competition time. It's ridiculous what Texas programs can achieve under those parameters.

I just posted this in the TXBands forum but thought it would be appropriate here as well. Dripping Springs colorguard is an incredible Texas guard who was moved up from Open to World Class after last season’s incredible show. I was blessed to see it live several times and it did really well at Worlds too. This is why we won’t give up trying to get to the next level in Texas! Because these kids are so capable!

And Arvin HS from California. They were just stunning. I loved watching them on FloMarching all last season. I wish I could have seen them live.
Man, after watching all these melancholy guard shows tonight along with so many tributes to Kobe Bryant today, I feel overwhelmingly sad.
My heart goes out to the Bryant family and friends, and those of the others killed in the crash as well. Sad day.
Be a good person every single day. You never know when it’s your last.

I've always been intrigued by bands that tend to be middle-of-the-road, yet have incredible winter guards. Kickapoo is an excellent example. The winter guard scene in Missouri is far more competitive than marching band.
It goes the other way, too- in MCCGA, Camdenton's 2019 guard was Scholastic AA, while bands that didn't even make my MO top 10 competed in Scholastic A and even Scholastic Open. (It's worth noting, though, that in 2019 Camdenton only used one guard that was mixed JV/Varsity level.)
It's interesting to see where programs choose to focus and how funding and participation impact each individual activity. Winter guard classes are far more flexible than band ones, and I feel like that makes it more competitive- classification is earned, rather than something that is outside the performers' control.

I made a prediction after finals last year, and I'm sticking to it. Ben Davis will be the first guard to be promoted mid-season to Scholastic World in many years. Their design last year was out of this world, and I still don't know how they weren't much closer to the medalists last season. They're incredibly talented and I can't imagine them finishing out this season in Open class.
